Learning To Give A Hoot: Open Access Workflows For Academic Librarians (Oawal), Jill Emery

Jill Emery

Graham Stone and Jill Emery have been working to try to develop an outline of some of the best practices for managing open access workflow management in academic libraries. In March 2014, we went live with OAWAL (pronounced owl): a crowdsourced blog/wiki to develop some of these practices and learn what innovators and experts in the field of scholarly communications and open access management have been doing. Our project is international in scope and relies heavily on countries such as the UK where country mandates are driving the development of workflows and management tools. This presentation will focus on recent …

Small School, Big Reach: #11;Open Access Outreach On A Liberal Arts College Campus, Janelle L. Wertzberger Dec 2014

Small School, Big Reach: #11;Open Access Outreach On A Liberal Arts College Campus, Janelle L. Wertzberger

Janelle Wertzberger

The liberal arts college environment provides opportunities for campus-wide engagement of open access issues that may differ from those at larger institutions. Because we support fewer campus authors, we are able to provide a high level of service. Librarians’ close connections with faculty and students allow us to move beyond articles and theses and solicit a wide range of scholarly and creative works to share in our repository. In addition, we’ve fostered conversations about open access, open textbooks, altmetrics, and copyright among faculty, staff, and students. This poster will present a snapshot of a variety of outreach and education strategies …

Show Me The Article!: Helping Students Understand The Library's Role In Accessing Scholarly Information, Todd J. Wiebe Dec 2014

Show Me The Article!: Helping Students Understand The Library's Role In Accessing Scholarly Information, Todd J. Wiebe

Todd J Wiebe

A fundamental concept that students need to understand about performing research at the college/university level is that, contrary to what they may believe or have been accustomed to thinking, the entire sum of human knowledge is not openly accessible to anyone for free via the Internet. Often times, students need to "see it to believe it" –or, more importantly, grasp it–by experiencing first-hand how the library and free web intersect. We should not assume that the divide between what is available freely on the Internet and the content provided by, and only accessible via campus libraries is automatically or commonly …

Books And Websites, E-Journals Or Print: If The Source Fits, Use It, Todd J. Wiebe Dec 2014

Books And Websites, E-Journals Or Print: If The Source Fits, Use It, Todd J. Wiebe

Todd J Wiebe

Despite the ever-growing range of media types, formats, and information-access options, students are often instructed to only use specific sources in their research. They are sometimes even given strict guidelines, prescribing how many of each they need to, or may, cite. It is important not to lead students to believe there is a formula for the ideal works cited for all research topics. In contrast, students should learn to think critically about the content and appropriateness of each potential source rather than choosing it only because it is a book, a journal article, a Website, etc. This article argues that …

Leveraging The "Google Mentality": 1search And The New (Inter)Face Of Library Discovery, Todd J. Wiebe, Jessica Hronchek Dec 2014

Leveraging The "Google Mentality": 1search And The New (Inter)Face Of Library Discovery, Todd J. Wiebe, Jessica Hronchek

Todd J Wiebe

1Search is a "discovery tool" that allows users to explore a large and diverse range of library content (e.g., books, e-books, full-text articles, other digital collections)—all from a single search box. Librarians plan to leverage the simplicity of 1Search as a library gateway to open up new opportunities for teaching information literacy.

Rediscovering Academic Libraries For Degree-Seeking Older Students, Marilia Antunez, Mary Aagard Dec 2014

Rediscovering Academic Libraries For Degree-Seeking Older Students, Marilia Antunez, Mary Aagard

Marilia Y. Antunez, MLS, MA

Increasingly higher numbers of older adults are returning to college campuses to earn degrees. Despite the recent economic recession and cuts to some state tuition waiver programs for older adults, many older students continue to pursue academic degrees on college campuses. Overwhelmingly, the literature that focuses on lifelong learning by older students has not incorporated degree-seeking students in their studies. This exploratory study is also driven by the role of libraries in serving this diverse student population. While the growing non-traditional student population brings many benefits to the life of college campuses, many of these students also face challenges in …

How The Usage Of It Is Effecting Academic Libraries, Mohammed J. Sarwar Dec 2014

How The Usage Of It Is Effecting Academic Libraries, Mohammed J. Sarwar

Mohammed J Sarwar

The purpose of this treatise is to determine how information technology is affecting the usage of services in the academic library. Various studies suggest that there has been a decline in usage of traditional face-to-face reference services. The majority of the college students prefer to use the Web instead of frequenting the library. Librarians and educators are concerned that these students are developing poor research skills if they only use the internet for research. Many of them are not familiar with the best electronic resources. Librarians may have less reference work but they will need to offer instruction on using …

Filling In The Gaps: Using Outreach Efforts To Acquire Documentation On The Black Campus Movement, 1965-1972, Lae'l Hughes-Watkins

Lae'l Hughes-Watkins

From 1965 to 1972, the United States was in the grip of a new wave of black student activism through protests and demonstrations at college and university campuses from coast to coast. Academic institutions were deluged with demands for increasing black faculty hires, developing black studies programs/departments, and increasing the number of black student admissions. Kent State University was one of the thousands of colleges and universities challenged to address the demands of a demographic who felt their civil rights were under siege within the walls of academic establishments. This article describes the attempts by the Department of Special Collec- …

Poster for the Open Education Conference 2014 in Washington, DC. The Open Education Initiative (OEI) began in 2011 as a response to the high cost of textbooks and the burden of student debt as barriers to education and learning. The OEI faculty incentive program provides small grants to faculty for: - the creation of new teaching materials, - the use of library subscription materials, - or the use of existing open (free) information resources to support our students’ learning. It is widely considered a successful program that builds on existing infrastructure and is scalable across big and small institutions. As …

Where Is The Evidence? Realising The Value Of Grey Literature For Public Policy & Practice: A Discussion Paper, Amanda Lawrence, John Houghton, Julian Thomas, Paul R. Weldon Nov 2014

Where Is The Evidence? Realising The Value Of Grey Literature For Public Policy & Practice: A Discussion Paper, Amanda Lawrence, John Houghton, Julian Thomas, Paul R. Weldon

Dr Paul Weldon

The internet has profoundly changed how we produce, use and collect research and information for public policy and practice, with grey literature playing an increasingly important role. The authors argue that grey literature (i.e. material produced and published by organisations without recourse to the commercial or scholarly publishing industry) is a key part of the evidence produced and used for public policy and practice. Through surveys of users, producing organisations and collecting services a detailed picture is provided of the importance and economic value of grey literature. However, finding and accessing policy information is a time-consuming task made harder by …

Can Data Drive Success?: Implementing Instruction Evaluation Forms, Ashley Rosener, James Gulvas, Barbara Harvey, Anne Merkle, Emily Frigo

Barbara C. Harvey

A committee comprised of seven Research and Instruction Librarians at Grand Valley State University met to analyze, evaluate, and recommend changes to a newly-implemented librarian instruction evaluation form. Prior to the creation of this form, instruction assessment forms were used on an individual, ad hoc basis for personal self-evaluation. In 2010, there was a grassroots effort to trial a standardized form, but it did not result in widespread adoption among teaching librarians beyond the duration of the project. In 2013, with a formal Instruction Program in place, there was renewed interest in creating an effective, sustainable, and practical library assessment …
