Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Research Reports
This report outlines the history of the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) and details the OWL Usability Project through the summer of 2006. The paper also discusses test methodologies, describes test methods, provides participant demographics, and presents findings and recommendations of the tests. The purpose of this report is to provide researchers, administrators, and pedagogues interested in usability and Writing Labs access to information on the Purdue OWL Usability Project. We hope our findings—and this open source approach to our research—will contribute positively to the corpus on usability and Writing Lab studies.

Addressing Staff Concerns In Changing Times: Supporting The Institution's Greatest Asset, Erika Linke
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The strategic plan at Carnegie Mellon University highlights the important contributions that staff members make to the organization. Concomitantly the university encourages the growth of a diverse campus community and stresses the important of developing a culture of respect. The university libraries have embraced these two threads – recognizing the important contributions made by staff and the desirability of a diverse work force. This paper discusses the importance of these two threads and highlights the various steps taken to acknowledge staff contributions and to create a culture of respect.

Managing Staff Concerns And Expectations During A Library Merger, Adriaan Swanepoel
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss results of a survey to measure concerns and expectations of library staff before and after a merger. The survey was done four months before a merger took place between three separate Technikons in South Africa, and it was repeated two months after the merger. The questionnaire that was used to gather information from all full-time library staff members of the three technikons included questions on how important it is for library staff, within the context of the merger, that certain work-related conditions stay the same, e.g. to have the same …

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Digital imaging projects of the G.W. Blunt White Library at Mystic Seaport Museum, funded by the Library of Congress and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, are explained and demonstrated with comments on how the Library has incorporated the projects’ outcomes into its workflow. Upon reapplying for additional funds, the Library was asked by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to instead reach out to scholars in the field and determine what their actually needs were in developing new scholarship. The Library hosted a conference and developed a survey to measure the scholars’ needs. Methodology and preliminary results are discussed.

In 2000, the Purdue University Libraries implemented a Books On Demand program. Instead of borrowing books requested through Interlibrary Loan, staff purchased selected titles and added them to the collection after patron use. After two years, five subject bibliographers analyzed 800 titles acquired through the program in their subject areas and compared them with titles acquired during the same time period through normal selection. The bibliographers concluded that the patron-driven Books On Demand program is a valuable complementary collection development tool. It consistently adds a very high percentage of relevant scholarly titles to the collection which provides input from patrons …
