Collaborative Librarianship
Systems of library and archival resource description have historically reinforced the societal power structures of white supremacy, patriarchy, and cis-heteronormativity. Following the framework of critical librarianship and acknowledging our positionality as predominately white departments, George Mason University Libraries’ Metadata Services (MS) and Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) have been engaging in a variety of projects of reparative resource description. To discuss points of collaboration between the two departments, the Task Force for Ethical and Anti-Oppressive Metadata (TEAM) was formed, consisting of staff and faculty members from both groups who work with resource description. Although the departments have a history of …

Awareness And Acceptance Of Emerging Technologies For Extended Information Service Delivery In Academic Libraries In Nigeria, Williams Torubo Saibakumo
Awareness And Acceptance Of Emerging Technologies For Extended Information Service Delivery In Academic Libraries In Nigeria, Williams Torubo Saibakumo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Expanding and modernising information services are crucial to the continual existence and patronage of academic libraries in the digital era. Technological evolutions have impelled libraries to incorporate all-encompassing, user-friendly and technology-driven service delivery approaches in academic libraries. Emerging technologies seem to fill this perceived gap. This study brings to light the level of awareness, adoption, preferred and readiness for the incorporation of emerging technologies into academic libraries activities in Nigeria. Amid 18 emerging technologies, adoption is stumpy, only an infinitesimal number (WebOPAC, library website, Cybrary, social media and Institutional repository) considered, and awareness remained high. Technologies like RFID, Integrated Library …

An Alternative Method Of Title Authority Control: The Shifted-Authority Control Model For Chinese Classics, Maiko Kimura
An Alternative Method Of Title Authority Control: The Shifted-Authority Control Model For Chinese Classics, Maiko Kimura
Journal of East Asian Libraries
This study investigates the effectiveness of a library-cataloging model developed by the author, namely, the shifted-authority control (SAC) model, for retrievals with fewer omissions in the field of Chinese classics. Since there is almost no title authority data for Chinese classics in Japan, the normal authority control model is unsuitable. To determine whether the SAC model can address this problem, a prototype authority database for searching the titles of Chinese classics was constructed. Then, three bibliographic databases were searched using work/item titles from the prototype database; this facilitated comparisons of the recall performance and the precision of the following three …

Electronic Theses And Dissertations Workflows: Interdepartmental Collaboration At The University Of Arkansas Libraries, Rachel Paul, Cedar C. Middleton
Collaborative Librarianship
Creating workflows that involve the work of multiple departments within a large organization can be challenging, especially when the procedures are complex and involve a number of stakeholders. This paper describes and evaluates the redesign of an interdepartmental workflow for the dissemination of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) at a mid-sized academic library. The paper outlines the collaborative planning process within the library as well as the eventual outreach to additional stakeholders on campus, addressing the challenges of tackling such communication between the library and other ETD stakeholders. It then presents a detailed examination of the newly revised, semi-automated workflow, …

Charleston Library Conference
Mandating contribution of theses and dissertations (TDs) to university archives and their electronic equivalents (ETDs) to an institutional repository (IR) is common practice. Optimizing workflows for archival print copies while managing electronic copies in an IR can be challenging given such factors as embargoes and the skill sets required to ensure theses and dissertations are accessible, discoverable, and ultimately safely stashed where they belong. As rational processes were gradually developed at the University of Vermont, pitfalls and breakthroughs presented themselves. This article relates our experience launching an ETD mandate, including campus outreach initiatives and improvements to the various related processes …
