This talk addresses how to select metadata standards and prepare for a Knowledge Organization System (KOS) in planning a digital project. It compares several metadata standards mostly related to bibliographical information, talks about various KOS systems including term lists, subject headings, categorization schemas, classification schemas and taxonomies. It also gives a list of KOS examples and projects related to or designed for philosophy resources. Furthermore, it discusses the process and different methods in creating categories, tag libraries and taxonomies. Workshop on data documentation, analysis & statistical software delivered online to the University of Central Florida (UCF)’s graduate students. This workshop is conducted by a Statistician at the College of Medicine and the Metadata Librarian at UCF. It includes five modules which focus on data basics, data documentation, dataset metadata, data analysis and statistical software. The data basics section introduces data, research data and dataset, the need for documenting and preserving research data. The data documentation and dataset metadata sections touch on researchers’ data practices and offer some general recommendations for a researcher’s research lifecycle. Workshop on data documentation, databases & statistical software delivered at the University of Central Florida’s Graduate Student Center. “Join a Statistician and a Metadata Librarian for an introduction to data documentation, databases and statistical software. Learn about research data, datasets and data documentation for data sharing, re-use and long-term preservation. This session introduces best practices and recommendations for documenting and analyzing research data. Moreover, it includes real-world examples and a discussion of data tools for data documentation and analysis, such as NVivo for qualitative data and SPSS/SAS/STATA/R for quantitative data.”

Linked data has been explored and adopted by the library and archive community in recent years, but it has remained a relatively high bar to implement for most librarians and catalogers in their daily work. To lower the barrier, the librarians at the University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries have adopted open source tools and platforms such as OpenRefine and Wikidata to their workflows to include linked data for their collections in the digital repositories as well as the library catalog. This program will present the experiment of adding linked data values to the digital collections at the University of Central Florida Libraries in its digital repository and institutional repository (IR). Working with the Digital Initiatives and some faculty members, the Metadata Librarian in Technical Services has been adding Library of Congress linked data and Virtual Internarial Authority File data to the library's collections in CONTENTdm and its Digital Commons based IR. This presentation will address the experiments of building research publication collections from external data sources such as PubMed, IEEE Xplore and Web of Science in the DSpace based institutional repository (IR). To get data from other sources is an alternative way to develop collections for different disciplines since author self-deposit has not become a common practice for institutional repositories.
