Awareness And Acceptance Of Emerging Technologies For Extended Information Service Delivery In Academic Libraries In Nigeria, Williams Torubo Saibakumo Apr 2021

Awareness And Acceptance Of Emerging Technologies For Extended Information Service Delivery In Academic Libraries In Nigeria, Williams Torubo Saibakumo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Expanding and modernising information services are crucial to the continual existence and patronage of academic libraries in the digital era. Technological evolutions have impelled libraries to incorporate all-encompassing, user-friendly and technology-driven service delivery approaches in academic libraries. Emerging technologies seem to fill this perceived gap. This study brings to light the level of awareness, adoption, preferred and readiness for the incorporation of emerging technologies into academic libraries activities in Nigeria. Amid 18 emerging technologies, adoption is stumpy, only an infinitesimal number (WebOPAC, library website, Cybrary, social media and Institutional repository) considered, and awareness remained high. Technologies like RFID, Integrated Library …

Lower The Barrier & Be Empowered: Creating And Including Linked Data Vocabularies For Digital Collections, Sai Deng

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Linked data has been explored and adopted by the library and archive community in recent years, but it has remained a relatively high bar to implement for most librarians and catalogers in their daily work. To lower the barrier, the librarians at the University of Central Florida (UCF) Libraries have adopted open source tools and platforms such as OpenRefine and Wikidata to their workflows to include linked data for their collections in the digital repositories as well as the library catalog. This presentation will review digital repositories' capabilities in accommodating linked data and show several cases of adding linked data …

Forsyth Library Faculty Publications

This poster was presented at DC-HUG 2017 in Rolla, MO.

Forsyth Digital Collections presents their content on more than one digital collections platform. Since the acquisition of Digital Commons and the launch of the FHSU Scholars Repository in January 2016, there has been an institutional effort to determine which platform is best suited to displaying existing content. Beginning in 2009, the FHSU Reveille Yearbooks collection had been hosted in CONTENTdm. This collection suffered from issues relating to access and user experience. In 2014 additional effort was put into improving the collection though those efforts did not achieve the desired result. …

From Digital Repositories To The Library Catalogue: Two Workflows For Transforming Metadata, Amy Leigh Allen, Deborah E. Kulczak, Mary A. Gilbertson

University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations

Making a connection between digital repositories and library catalogues is an issue many libraries and archives face, especially when dealing with items that traditionally received full cataloguing records. This paper explores different workflows for reusing metadata to create catalogue records, connecting the two resources together. In order to have one interface to search both the older physical items and newer digital items, the archives and technical services department of the University of Arkansas Libraries worked together to create different workflows to save time and eliminate the need for double entry, using the open source software MarcEdit and XML Notepad. Two …

Beyond The Back Room: The Role Of Metadata And Catalog Librarians In Digital Humanities, Lisa M. Mcfall

Book Chapters

Many professors and students are surprised to learn about the variety of skills metadata and catalog librarians possess that can benefit their digital humanities projects. Metadata and catalog librarians already have experience in areas such as developing project metadata schemas and controlled vocabularies, as well as providing suggestions for project organization, and have the basic abilities needed to support learning new skills such as XML and TEI. This chapter will offer perspectives on how a metadata and catalog librarian can contribute to digital humanities projects. A case study focusing on the involvement of the Metadata and Catalog Librarian with the …

The University Archives has become an integral part of an academic institution. It has met its role as the repository for the rich history of an institution. They have met the challenges of a changing environment at many points in their history. The most recent change being the addition of born-digital materials into their collections. However, there is an opportunity to collaborate with another unit within academic libraries. The introduction and growth of institutional repositories (IR) on college campuses has provided an opportunity for university archives. An IR’s goal is to preserve the intellectual output of an institution. This is …

Building Collections In Irs From External Data Sources, Sai Deng, Susan Matveyeva Oct 2012

Building Collections In Irs From External Data Sources, Sai Deng, Susan Matveyeva

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This presentation will address the experiments of building research publication collections from external data sources such as PubMed, IEEE Xplore and Web of Science in the DSpace based institutional repository (IR). To get data from other sources is an alternative way to develop collections for different disciplines since author self-deposit has not become a common practice for institutional repositories. This is also an effort in line with the current metadata cataloging trend of moving from item by item cataloging to batch processing of metadata, repurposing of metadata between different systems and communities, and providing value-added data services to students and …

Visualizing Linked Data, F. Tim Knight Jul 2012

Visualizing Linked Data, F. Tim Knight

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Provides an introduction to linked data considering ways to visualize and get a better understanding of this relatively new concept. Linked data is a different way for our bibliographic data to interact with the data available on the Web.. It will hopefully enhance the information we already provide, make it easier for us to provide that information and allow libraries to integrate themselves better with other information sources on the web.
