Much as unemployment is dreaded in all market economies, the problems associated with its measurement in Nigeria are sometimes not addressed, if ever appreciated. To facilitate international comparison, uniform measurement methods have considerably narrowed down the difference in the concept of unemployment. Nevertheless, unemployment index seems to disguise the extent of the problem in Nigeria. Unless the desire to work for a wage is explicitly expressed, it is difficult to identify the unemployed. A low tempo of activities characterised the international Commodity markets during the fourth quarter of 1984. The marginal movements in the price levels of most commodities were however accentuated by currency exchange rate fluctuations. The all-commodities price index rose by 5.0 and 0.3 per cent over its respective levels in the preceding quarter and the corresponding quarter of 1983. The price increase was reflected in all but three of the selected commodities. The highest price increases occurred in coffee (26. 7%), cocoa (6 .3%) palm oil (6%) and cotton (5 .8%). The upward movement in the level of money supply narrowly defined (Ml) which occurred in third quarter of 1984 continued in the fourth. At the end of December, MI stood at NI 2,204.1 million, increasing by N664.0 million or 5.8 per cent over the level at the end of the preceding quarter. Section one presents the historical evolution of the policies under three different types of political administration, namely, the colonial era, the civilian administration of the first republic ( 1960-1965). and the military regime which held the reigns of political power for thirteen years (1966-1979). This paper has examined the maturity and security patterns of commercial bank loans and advances during the 1963-68 period. It is, perhaps, not surprising to find that most commercial bank loans are short-term. It is, however, instructive to find that up to 90 per cent of commercial bank loans granted during the period matured or were expected to mature within one year. This pattern of behaviour is observed in a developing country in which commercial banks constitute the main mobilisers and suppliers of loanable funds.

This article examines tax reforms in Nigeria which was undertaken to restructure indirect and direct (individual and company). The article observed that the reform was undertaken because of the low current revenue which led to a shortfall in the calendar year budget equivalent of £178.8 million by 10.8 per cent. The drop in revenue was caused by a fall in demand for dutiable imports. Although current revenue fell, current expenditure rose by 13.0 per cent to £88.6 million, due mainly to a rise of about 67 per cent in public debt servicing and unplanned expenditures related to the political situation …
