Idleness Working: The Discourse Of Love's Labor From Ovid Through Chaucer And Gower, Gregory Sadlek Jan 2016

Idleness Working: The Discourse Of Love's Labor From Ovid Through Chaucer And Gower, Gregory Sadlek

Gregory M Sadlek

Inspired by the critical theories of M. M. Bakhtin, Idleness Working is a groundbreaking study of key works in the Western literature of love from Classical Rome to the late Middle Ages. The study focuses on the evolution of the ideologically-saturated discourse of love's labor contained in these works and thus explores them in the context of ancient and medieval theories of labor and leisure, which themselves are seen to evolve through the course of Western history. What emerges from this study is a fresh appreciation and deepened understanding of such well-known classics of love literature as Ovid's Ars amatoria …

“Turning To The Stranger In Shakespeare’S Henry V”, Ruben Espinosa Dec 2015

“Turning To The Stranger In Shakespeare’S Henry V”, Ruben Espinosa

Ruben Espinosa

This collection is currently under contract with MLA. With a twenty-first century American student demographic in mind, I aim to interrogate how attention to the negotiation of alterity in Henry V registers Shakespeare’s keen attention to the role of the immigrant/alien/stranger/other in the nation-building enterprise of the play, and also how it reveals the play’s rich cultural currency for today’s underrepresented students, whose own epistemological standpoints are informed by issues of immigration, xenophobia, and the imagined value of homogeneity.

Theatre And Drama: The Art Of Paradox, Andrew Vorder Bruegge

Andrew Vorder Bruegge, Ph.D.

This is a textbook for THRT 210: Script Analysis at Winthrop University. The publisher has withdrawn the rights to reprint the text I have been using for several years That motivated me to create my own textbook. During 2014-15 I am working with a theatre major who took THRT 210 with me last year. She helped me with editing and writing of the content. I will use it with students in draft form the next time I teach the course and revise it and expand it until it is ready to offer to a publisher for national distribution.

Summer’S Lease, Watercolors By Lynn Sondag, Lynn Sondag Dec 2015

Summer’S Lease, Watercolors By Lynn Sondag, Lynn Sondag

Lynn Sondag

Lynn Sondag’s expressive watercolors represent the variety of tones found in daily walks. Subtle variations evoke ripples of the Pacific West Coast light, slight movements, and the anticipation of changes to come further down the trail.

Developed over fifteen years of walks in San Francisco’s Presidio, this imagery of Bay Area
coastal landscapes, and the Sea Cliff neighborhood perched atop the cliffs at Land’s End, demonstrates what Sondag describes as “new perspectives” – occurring when a familiar place is transformed by fog, light, and wind.

It is impossible to depict this region without acknowledging that it is defined by the sea. In her Ocean Beach …

From public personas such as Angelina Jolie to Julian Assange, this book explores the notion of celebrity status from various perspectives and discusses the way different people use their identity to deliver a specific message to the masses. Whether it be in politics, advertising or activism, celebrities play a pivotal role in drawing in the public's attention. "New Strategies In Using Watermarks To Date Sub-Saharan Islamic Manuscripts" In Arts And Crafts Of Literacy In Sub-Saharan Africa, Brigaglia, A. And Nobili, M., Eds., Michaelle L. Biddle Dec 2015

"New Strategies In Using Watermarks To Date Sub-Saharan Islamic Manuscripts" In Arts And Crafts Of Literacy In Sub-Saharan Africa, Brigaglia, A. And Nobili, M., Eds., Michaelle L. Biddle

Michaelle Biddle

For more than a century watermarks have been used as an important component in cataloging, dating, and authenticating books, manuscripts, art work, musical scores, financial instruments and other paper items. The gains can be immense if watermarks and countermarks, not as singletons but in combination, are studied as only one aspect of a paper sheet and that examination is combined with study extending across many disciplines. The Andrea Galvani Pordenone paper mills provide a useful case study as to how we can deduce date ranges for their watermarks by using a holistic approach – combining paper sheet analysis with the …
