A Performing Arts Center For Arlington, Texas, Rebecca Boles
A Performing Arts Center For Arlington, Texas, Rebecca Boles
Interior Design Faculty Publications
In the spring of 1983, several Arlington community groups formed the Performing Arts Coalition. Foremost among their priorities was the establishment of a Performing Arts Center for their community. Arlington undisputedly needs a cultural center and the growth of coalition groups is proof that the city has sufficient interest to sustain such an effort. A performing arts center would be beneficial to the coalition for many reasons. Shared staff and facilities increases the cost effectiveness of the member organizations. A consolidation of facilities would produce the best equipped showcase for the performing arts, and the consolidation of creative talent and …

The Phoenix Bird Rehabilitation Center, Cleburne, Texas, Thomas M. Bodell
The Phoenix Bird Rehabilitation Center, Cleburne, Texas, Thomas M. Bodell
School of Architecture Theses
The Phoenix Center, presently of Arlington, Texas is the largest bird rehabilitation center in North Texas. It is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation of Texas avian wildlife and has been rapidly expanding during the last several years. The Center is currently engaged in acquiring land and donations for the construction of new facilities. A preliminary site plan for the new facility was prepared by Professor James Turner's graduate landscape class, LARC 5674 during the fall semester 1982. As the architectural consultant for the project, Bodell worked closely with the landscape students to develop the site plan which was …

School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1983 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Student Centre. Jay Hoffman and Darrel Fields. The challenge for the project was to site a student centre at the heart of the UTA campus without impeding upon one of its few green open spaces. This is achieved by creating a profile that folds the land into the sky to a height that responds to the adjacent buildings. Two grass-covered hills replace a flat landscape to form a groundscraper which contains the programmatic functions. Crossing paths tunnel through the higher elements …

The master plan process is a suitable approach for the Church to maximize the potential of their land..
How Nature Forms, Martin Price
How Nature Forms, Martin Price
School of Architecture Faculty Publications
The architecture of Martin Price is not based on the ideal solids of Euclidean geometry or the canons of classical architecture, but rather on seeking inspiration in nature's own structural principles.

1982.2 - Housing Arlington, Martin Price, Randol Byrd, Kevin Crumpler
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1982 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Housing. Randol Byrd and Kevin Crumpler. The Arlington housing project is an urban model which creates lyrical form by subtracting volumes of space from an overall sloping roof plane. It is making "hollow in bump." The diagonal line creates a basic order of form in this multi-unit project. Subtle folds of the sloping roof, together with the bending of walls, create a natural, meandering rhythmic order. Stepped windows intersect stepped solid areas below the windows, to form a yin-yang relationship.
A New County Courthouse And Square For Dallas, Texas, Richard Wintersole
A New County Courthouse And Square For Dallas, Texas, Richard Wintersole
School of Architecture Theses
Dallas County recently purchased a site in downtown which the City's Master Plan has earmarked for a new County Courthouse to be constructed in 1995. The site is located at the northern edge of an open urban space which contains John F Kennedy Memorial Plaza and John Neely Bryan County Park. Existing on the site and providing an integral edge to the open urban square is the Purse Building, a warehouse constructed in the Chicago Style in 1898. Representatives of the County and the County Historic Commission have expressed an interest in incorporating the Purse Building into the design for …
A Guide To Revenue Administration For Small Cities, Institute Of Urban Studies
A Guide To Revenue Administration For Small Cities, Institute Of Urban Studies
Institute of Urban Studies Publications
Commencing with California's passage of Proposition 13, cities and towns throughout the nation have been compelled to re-examine their reliance on traditional revenue sources. Whether or not there has in fact been a universal "taxpayer revolt", the economic conditions of the past few years have caused both city officials and the public at large to seek relief from the increasing burden of the property tax. Believing that an analysis of other municipal revenue sources, whether existing or potential, might benefit Texas cities and towns, the Institute of Urban Studies obtained a grant under Title I of the Higher Education Act …

1980.2 - Student Housing Uta, Martin Price, Robert Meckfessel
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1980 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Dormitory. Robert Meckfessel. The aim of positioning the dorm at the periphery of the UTA commuter parking lot, is to attempt to socially intermix the student residents with students who commute to campus. The three dormitory pathways meander across a pond and form a connection to the University. These paths define the form of the linear buildings and arrive at a plaza that focuses on the main route through the campus. Roof profiles also meander and join an earth berm, giving …

Landscape Architecture: A Profession Designed For Minorities, Gary O. Robinette
Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications
Why should a young black student consider a career in landscape architecture? Professional landscape architects are responsible for the planning and management of land and the design and placement of natural and man-made elements in outdoor areas. Landscape architecture is the art and science of developing land and exterior elements for optimum human use and enjoyment while preserving the essence of the natural environment. In addition to a further description of studying and working in landscape architecture, this also highlights the following African American landscape architects: Clinton Hewitt, Raymond Collins, Elon Mickels, Charles Fountain, Ernest Edwards, Al Wilkins, William Wilson, …

The Institute of Urban Studies has in its first five years mounted a broad array of educational, research and service responses to the problems of communities in both metropolitan and rural areas. These initial efforts would not have been possible without the imagination and diligence of those who served with our initial research and service units, the urban affairs faculty, and more recently, our criminal justice faculty. What remains is the challenge of furthering the capability of our existing efforts and building in both the outreach and academic areas to respond to new needs in Texas communities.

Institute of Urban Studies Publications
This plan was prepared by the staff of the Institute of Urban Studies and represents its suggestions for the development of the Institute during the period 1970-1976. The objective in preparing the plan is primarily to provide a general guide for state government and university officials who will make the policy and budgetary decisions which determine the future role of the Institute and the scope of its activities. A selected group of officials is being asked to review and comment on the plan in its present draft form so that a more refined version can be prepared for more general …

An Institute For Urban Studies: A Preliminary Proposal, Luther G. Hagard
Institute of Urban Studies Publications
No metropolitan area in the state is equipped with an instrument for continuing and comprehensive study of the multitude of problems confronting urban communities. Other urban areas of the nation have long had the services of "bureaus" or "institutes" financed and staffed for extensive research activities. Most such units are academically based and many are constituted as states agencies associated with public institutions of higher education. Their contributions in the form of basic research, data compilation, training, and information services have been of significant value in the search for effective solutions to urban problems. The Dallas - Fort Worth metropolitan …
