School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 2004 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Art Center Expansion. Jenda Michl. The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena asked the studio to design an alternative solution for the expansion of their South Campus. The form of this project is based on lyrical lines of defined program and pedestrian roofscape which grow like branches of a tree from the existing Raymond Building, to form dormitories and street-front studios before intertwining with a depressed Glenarm Street to create a circulation node. Branches pivot to infill behind the existing …

2003.1 - Grand Prix Racetrack, Martin Price, Jan Damiecki
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 2003 spring semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Speedway. Jan Damiecki. The project is based on Formula One racing for a site in Mansfield, south of Arlington. Spectator seating is placed perpendicular to the roadway, challenging tradition and creating a dramatic position to watch the race. Cars will appear to come speeding toward the audience, then disappear beneath them. The sloping berm-like forms with subtracted rhythmic intervals of carved-out spaces, rise up from the ground to contain pit garages, grandstand seating, sky box suites, track side rental and condominium …

2001.1 - Movie Theatres Metroplex, Martin Price, Heath Macdonald
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 2001 spring semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Movie Theatres. Heath MacDonald. The project is sited adjacent to a courtyard-like enclosure just off the highway, at the entry to Ricardo Legorreta's Solana project in Southlake, Texas. The blank exterior walls cut into the ground, and sloping rooftops emerge above the earth and twist in rhythmic patterns around an entry courtyard. The profile is like an expressive series of dancing rock outcroppings. A crystalline entry form contains lines from famous films etched in color. Walkways bridge an open lobby volume …

2000.1 - Casino With Indoor Skiing, Las Vegas, Martin Price, Katherine Galpin
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 2000 spring semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Casino. Katherine Galpin. An indoor skiing attraction is the enticement to lure gamblers to the casino and hotel, and set it apart from competing casinos. Spatial, visual, and visceral excitement is essential for Las Vegas, and key to the success of any project. Lifts arrive at the top of a torqued-formed meandering enclosure containing three separate ski trails. The trails are divided into beginners, intermediate and advanced, determined by the steepness and relative difficulty of twists and turns. At the bottom …

1999.2 - Abandoibarra Composite Bilbao, Martin Price, John Martin Oury
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1999 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Abandoibarra. John Martin Oury. The Bilbao project is a composite of housing, commercial, provincial and municipal offices, library, hotel, commercial space and parking which interfaces with the city and the river. The grid of the city is respected with street vistas that continue between the swirling forms, which are inspired by Serra's torqued ellipses. Intensity of the swirling shapes increases near the Guggenheim Museum and decreases in response to the straight lines of the Euskalduna Concert Hall. Government offices are located …

1998.2 - Aquarium Bilbao, Martin Price, Chy-Tseh Che, Dani Alsina-Tora
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1998 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Aquarium. Chy-tseh Che, scheme one, and Dani Alsina-Tora, scheme two. An eddy or circular movement of water becomes the metaphor for an aquarium set in the river in Bilbao, Spain in scheme one. Spatial sequences flow from entry on land, through tunnels in the water, to ramps inside the aquarium. Scheme two is a landshape form in order not to be dwarfed by the adjacent Guggenheim. The ground is lifted up into the sky and the sky is brought down into …

1997.2 - Opera House Dallas, Martin Price, Patrick Cox
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1997 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Opera House. Patrick Cox. The site is in Dallas adjacent to the Meyerson Concert Hall. Rhythmic lines form patterns of naturally flowing paths of movement, dramatically expressed in the approach to the design of the entry, lobby, and seating spaces. Seating flexibly pivots and moves with a hydraulic system to accommodate both traditional staging as well as experimental staging, where the stage thrusts forward from the proscenium into the audience. The exterior form pivots and spirals upward, expressing the various functions …

1995.2 - Concert Hall Fort Worth, Martin Price, Per Johan Dahl
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1995 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Concert Hall. Per Johan Dahl. The large scale of the project is reduced by spiraling it into the ground and weaving it into the scale of the surrounding Fort Worth urban fabric. This provides for a more comfortable descent into the entry. Color is used to articulate and enhance a sense of movement through a gradation of warm color at the entrance to cool color inside the hall. The roof slopes and folds upward in two sections, which provide for daylight …

1994.1 - Housing Warsaw Poland, Martin Price
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1994 spring semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Warsaw Housing. The multi-unit dwellings are positioned at a lake in a beautiful park in Warsaw. The horizontal profile of the rhythmically-placed units raise upward and lower downward to resonate with the undulating profiles of the trees. The water is extended into the landscape to distribute lake frontage throughout the site. The continuous rows of units twist and turn creating a rhythm of lyrical lines which extend outward into the land, and extend the land inward into the dwellings. The units …

1992.1 - Theatre 3 At The Meyerson, Dallas, Martin Price
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1992 spring semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Theatre 3. The site is a large, open green space adjacent to the Meyerson Concert Hall in Dallas. A rhythmic wave-like composition is produced by raising sections of land upward and lowering sections downward. The small scale arena-type theatre is positioned under the raised section facing the street. The lowered section brings the sky down into the land, providing daylight to the below-grade parking entrance to the concert hall. The land then rises up to contain restaurants. The land climbs up …

1991.2 - La Jolla Offices And Hotel, Martin Price, Melissa Bernard
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1991 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. La Jolla Office and Hotel. Melissa Bernard. The scheme snakes around a hill and, being situated in a valley, its profile creates a new hill. It becomes part of the existing rhythm of rolling hills and valleys of La Jolla, with views focused into the hills. As the angular form twists through the land, it separates to enclose a linear courtyard. Offices flanking both sides of an interior path have views facing outward or into the courtyard. Hotel rooms are positioned …

1990.2 - Ecology Museum Alliance Airport, Martin Price, Kathleen Korba
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1990 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Ecology Museum. Kathleen Korba. An area of magnificent natural surroundings in the northwestern area of Fort Worth is the location for the museum. The principal feature is the exterior path that traverses the site as a hollowed-out section of land, making it one with the land. The retaining walls form the facades of the exhibition and ancillary spaces of the museum. An interior path snakes through a continuously torqued plane that twists from a horizontal to a vertical position. Instead of …

1988.1 - Viking Ship Museum At Chicago Lakefront, Martin Price, Cliff Welch
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1988 spring semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Viking Ship Museum. Cliff Welch. A museum in Chicago to house a replica of a Viking ship sits between the edge of Lake Michigan and a tree-covered park. The project responds with a straight edge at the lake, and reacts with a lyrically rhythmic twisting form that echoes the branching and undulations of the trees in the park. The park extends into the museum, separating it into two sections: the entry to the museum and gift shop, and the gallery that …
1987.1 - Resonating With The Highway, Arlington, Martin Price
1987.1 - Resonating With The Highway, Arlington, Martin Price
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1987 spring semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Housing, Office, Commercial, Hotel Complex. Forms rise and fall in consonance with the swirling, rising and descending highway intersections of highway 360 and 183 in Arlington in scheme one. Sections appear to parallel the highway or radiate from a center point of a circle. Portions of a hill where highway 20 in Arlington separates, is radically removed in scheme two. It is then rebuilt with the original profile of the hill as a backbone-like ridge line of office space, which rhythmically …
1986.2 - Community Centre Hwy 30 Arlington, Martin Price, Robin D. Hudson, Joseph Scott Briant
1986.2 - Community Centre Hwy 30 Arlington, Martin Price, Robin D. Hudson, Joseph Scott Briant
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1986 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Community Centre. Robin D Hudson, scheme one, and Joseph Scott Brian, scheme two. The site is along highway 30 in Arlington adjacent to an amusement park and a water park. The form of scheme one rises from the ground where it contains a swimming pool, parallels the highway, changes direction and bridges over the highway with a restaurant. It then descends, appearing to go under the existing creek only to rise again on the other side with an outdoor theatre. The …

1983.2 - Student Centre Uta, Martin Price, Jay Hoffman, Darrel Fields
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1983 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Student Centre. Jay Hoffman and Darrel Fields. The challenge for the project was to site a student centre at the heart of the UTA campus without impeding upon one of its few green open spaces. This is achieved by creating a profile that folds the land into the sky to a height that responds to the adjacent buildings. Two grass-covered hills replace a flat landscape to form a groundscraper which contains the programmatic functions. Crossing paths tunnel through the higher elements …
1982.2 - Housing Arlington, Martin Price, Randol Byrd, Kevin Crumpler
1982.2 - Housing Arlington, Martin Price, Randol Byrd, Kevin Crumpler
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1982 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Housing. Randol Byrd and Kevin Crumpler. The Arlington housing project is an urban model which creates lyrical form by subtracting volumes of space from an overall sloping roof plane. It is making "hollow in bump." The diagonal line creates a basic order of form in this multi-unit project. Subtle folds of the sloping roof, together with the bending of walls, create a natural, meandering rhythmic order. Stepped windows intersect stepped solid areas below the windows, to form a yin-yang relationship.
1980.2 - Student Housing Uta, Martin Price, Robert Meckfessel
1980.2 - Student Housing Uta, Martin Price, Robert Meckfessel
School of Architecture Student Projects
Design work from the 1980 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Dormitory. Robert Meckfessel. The aim of positioning the dorm at the periphery of the UTA commuter parking lot, is to attempt to socially intermix the student residents with students who commute to campus. The three dormitory pathways meander across a pond and form a connection to the University. These paths define the form of the linear buildings and arrive at a plaza that focuses on the main route through the campus. Roof profiles also meander and join an earth berm, giving …
