Engaging Research As A Student Affairs Professional, Rishi R. Sriram

Rishi Sriram, Ph.D.

Student affairs professionals are often referred to as scholar-practitioners. As demands upon professionals increase, however, it is all too easy for the “practitioner” part to completely overtake the “scholar.” If we find ourselves too busy even to read research, perhaps it is time to pause, re-establish our priorities, and reclaim the “scholar” in scholar-practitioner.

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

All college students experience some sort of internal and/or external pressure to reach their definition of success. Family members, friends, professors, future employers, coaches, student organizations, and most importantly, students themselves expect certain behaviors to lead to a successful collegiate career (Newton, 2000). This video highlights the experiences and viewpoints of one student’s struggle with residual stress and offers support resources found on most campuses across the country. With the prevalence of stress and anxiety related disorders found within today’s collegiate population (Levine, 2005), this video hopes to raise awareness and assist struggling students who are seeking relief by providing …

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

International students often arrive in the United States with pure excitement and ready to embark on the next phase of their academic journey. They join the masses of new freshman arriving on college campuses nationwide; however, they have a different set of potential college student issues. International students have questions about studying and living in their new location, frequently struggling due to a lack of language or cultural understanding (Sakurako, 2000). They are often times unaware of the various resources available to them on their college campus (Libson, 2008). Most universities provide an array of academic support including libraries, study …

It Can Happen Here Too: Cyberbullying On College Campuses [Brochure], Tiffany Polite, Andrew Swan

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

While much of the emphasis on cyberbullying has been on elementary and adolescent youth, there is growing evidence that it is happening at the college level as well. Students, faculty members, and administration have all been affected by cyberbullying, which at times, has resulted in ruined personal and professional reputations. It is difficult to grasp how often cyberbullying happens amongst adults, because they are usually too embarrassed to come forward. According to Working to Halt Online Abuse’s 2010 Cyberbullying Statistics, those in the 18-30 age range had been victimized most often. Increasingly, research is being presented that shows that many …

Managing Finances In College [Brochure And Video], Laura Heidel, Caleb M. Parrigan

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

Managing finances is a very important instrument that should be demonstrated on a daily basis by all students, and also any individual that is working full-time and has a set of expenses that must be paid. Creating a budget helps college students resist physical, mental, and emotional stress. Knowing how to budget your expenses will teach students how to be responsible, how you view money, and the true value of a dollar. Credit cards are also a potential stressor for students. Nellie Mae, a student loan provider, finds that 83% of undergraduates have at least one credit card and the …

Anorexia and Bulimia are two of the most common eating disorders among college students today (Reynolds, 2009). From personal interviews with college students and our research we have found that these two eating disorders, among many others, may have a huge impact on a student’s success while in college. Creating awareness about eating disorders, the effects, warning signs, and resources will help students begin …

Sex And Sexual Health: What's On Your Mind? [Brochure], Sarah Rigsby, Kristen Smith

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

As young adults begin their experience on a college campus they can often times find themselves in a more open environment where the topic of sex can more readily be discussed. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation (2003) by the age of 24, one in four American’s will have contracted an STD. Socialization And Campus Involvement [Brochure And Video], Allison Smith, Heather Thomas

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

College is a new and challenging experience and can often put emotional, mental and/or physical strain on incoming students (Sax, Bryant & Gilmartin, 2002). Students may be affected differently based on the situations they encounter. Socialization and campus involvement can be a key factor in helping students overcome these issues. According to Pritchard and Wilson (2003), studies have shown that students who have a higher sense of emotional, mental and physical well-being are more likely to succeed in college. Gaining awareness of the importance of socialization while in college can help maximize a college experience and provide beneficial tools for …

Does More Education Cause Higher Earnings?, Kevin F. Hallock

Economics Faculty Publications

College graduates earned roughly 67% more per hour than high school graduates in the US in 2010. Those with more education earn more because the world of work measures in some manner that they are simply more productive in dollars and cents terms. Some signaling theory advocates argue that if the return to education were due to learning, then the returns should be smoothly proportional to the time spent in school. However, researchers have detected a larger jump in earnings for those who complete the final year of college. Whether different schools return differently is an extension of the learning …

Conceptualizations Of Spirituality, Religion, And Faith: Comparing Biblical Notions With The Perspectives Of Protestant Christian Students At A Lutheran College, Christy M. Craft, Alyssa B. Rockenbach

Christy Moran Craft

As part of a larger investigation into the spiritual climate at one Lutheran college, we interviewed Protestant Christian students in order to compare their conceptualizations of spirituality, religion, and faith with biblical notions of those concepts. We found that the students' understandings of those concepts only loosely reflected general understanding within the higher education literature, and a significant disconnect existed between their conceptualizations of the relevant terms and those found in the Bible. In an effort to make meaning of our findings, we discuss existing literature about religious illiteracy as it relates to inherited faith and to the impact of …
