The Road To The White House: Using Experiential Learning In The Classroom, Gregory Domin
Perspectives In Learning
This case study presents a first hand account of experiential learning undertaken by the author and 16 Mercer University students during the 2008 presidential nominating season. The author was able to arrange a seminar entitled “The Road to the White House” which included an observation trip to South Carolina for the Republican Primary, 16-21 January, 2008, where students both witnessed and participated in the unfolding events of the 2008 presidential campaign
Optimistic Bias In The University Classroom, 2010 Columbus State University
Optimistic Bias In The University Classroom, Harvey Richman Ph.D.
Perspectives In Learning
This research investigated the prevalence of “optimistic bias” (unrealistic performance expectations) among low scoring students. Possible causes and remediations are discussed. Two hundred seventy four undergraduate students were surveyed after their first course exam, and again after their second exam, to assess the effects of optimistic bias. At both survey points, each student provided (1) a performance estimate for the recently taken exam, (2) actual score for that exam after receiving it, and (3) an estimate of future exam performance. The sample was divided into quartiles based on first exam actual scores. Lowest quartile students were overly optimistic regarding their …

The Phenomenon Of Character Development In A Distance Education Course, 2010 Brigham Young University-Utah
The Phenomenon Of Character Development In A Distance Education Course, Michael C. Johnson, Richard Osguthorpe, David D. Williams
Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Rarely are character development-related aims espoused by higher education reflected in the design and delivery of distance education programs. Further, literature exploring the character development aspects of distance education is sparse. This study finds that the instructor and students in a fantasy literature distance course perceived myriad kinds of character development related to performance, moral, relational, and spiritual character traits and strengths. This paper considers implications for character development in distance education and directions for future research.
Teacher Perceptions Of Student Support Team And Response To Intervention, 2010 Liberty University
Teacher Perceptions Of Student Support Team And Response To Intervention, Lynn Russell Bailey
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study was to investigate teacher perceptions of Student Support Team (SST) and Response to Intervention (RTI) effectiveness. While an effective, researchbased framework is certainly paramount to the success of either endeavor, the teachers involved in the process and their perceptions directly impact the effectiveness. Teacher perceptions of their familiarity with SST and RTI, adequacy of training, qualifications to implement, the effectiveness of SST and RTI, eligibility requirements for special education, weaknesses of the frameworks, and reasons for non-referral are examined in the study. The sample population for the survey consisted of teachers (n=342) from around the …

In 2001, the ACM and IEEE Computing Curriculum stated that it was necessary to address "the need to develop implementation models that are international in scope and could be practiced in universities around the world." With increasing connectivity through the internet, the move towards a global economy and growing use of technology places software internationalization as a more important concern for developers. However, there has been a "clear shortage in terms of numbers of trained persons applying for entry-level positions" in this area. Eric Brechner, Director of Microsoft Development Training, suggested …

Technology For Assessing Open And Distance Learners, Meg O'Reilly, Chris Morgan
Dr Meg O'Reilly
This paper describes use of the WWW to enhance assessment in the open, distance and flexible learning contexts. From their experiences as practitioners in instructional design and Web development, the authors consider effectiveness, efficiency and new opportunities in facilitating student assessment via the WWW. Discussion draws upon the body of literature in Web-based developments, open and distance learning, instructional design, research and case study data. Case studies from Australian universities demonstrate emerging practices and reflections brought about by a shift towards flexible delivery and the use of WWW technology. The dissolving of distinctions between on campus and off campus is …

The Professional Doctorate On Webcd, Meg O'Reilly, Chris Morgan
Dr Meg O'Reilly
Students enrolled in Southern Cross University's (SCU) Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) are a unique group of senior business people. Their demand for greater flexibility of delivery and portability of study materials was the impetus for a redesign of this professional degree at SCU. With a rapidly growing student base around Australia and SEAsia, DBA study packages must be suitable for a very mobile and busy professional group. Most have convenient access to computers and network connection, unlike students in many other programs. On the other hand, DBA students do not have much time to devote to study. They are …

Sharing Learning Resources: Workplace Learning, Mentoring & Assessment, Chris Morgan, Meg O'Reilly, J Stewart
Dr Meg O'Reilly
This paper is a report of an example of two organisations sharing resources to provide a workplace based learning and assessment model for registered nurses. The issue of mentorship has been explored in the context of a nurse education program offered in distance mode. The role of the Clinical Teaching Associate (CTA), a workplace mentor and assessor is the focus of the paper which explains the model's evolution over the past seven years. Whilst there is still much to learn about facilitating workplace mentorship, this paper throws considerable light on the issues associated with partnerships between industry and higher education …

Instructional Design: How Do We Know Our Learners?, Chris Morgan, Sophie Dicorpo, Meg O'Reilly
Dr Meg O'Reilly
This paper provides some background discussion to a workshop in which we will seek discussion on issues of evaluation and research of instructional design activity in distance and open learning. We question the theoretical underpinnings of instructional design and its appropriateness in open learning contexts. In particular, we question the usefulness of research containing limiting assumptions about how learners should appropriately use study materials. The workshop aims to raise these issues as a starting point for input to the development of an instructional design research and evaluation project which is currently being devised at Southern Cross.

A Guide To Raising Pheasants, Nicole Silveira
Agricultural Education and Communication
The purpose of this study was to aid in the implementation and utilization of an experiential learning lab in the form of a pheasant facility on the Cal Poly Campus.
A pheasant facility and enterprise at the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Animal Science Unit would be the perfect hands on learning device that can really epitomize the motto, “Learn By Doing”. The enterprise projects have long been an integral component of the Agricultural Education and Communication curriculum and many students have gained the critical management skills necessary to be competitive in production and allied industries - including teaching.
