Invisible Poverty: Awareness, Attitudes, And Action, 2020 Luther Seminary
Invisible Poverty: Awareness, Attitudes, And Action, Joseph W. Johnson
Doctor of Ministry Theses
In small-town rural America, we do not tend to see poverty. Poverty is relatively invisible, especially among our youth and children. Invisible Poverty explores the issues, challenges, stereotypes, and causes of small-town rural poverty while presenting possible solutions. Drawing from Alvin Luedke, Craig Van Gelder, Alan Roxburgh, Patrick Keifert, Cynthia Duncan, and Shannon Jung, Invisible Poverty presents a missional theology of accompaniment seeking justice and avoiding shame. In an effort to understand the complexity of rural poverty, Invisible Poverty asks; How might Action Research interventions affect awareness, attitudes, and actions of the congregation concerning the issues of poverty?
Proclaiming Jubilee: Preaching That Sets Women Free, 2020 Luther Seminary
Proclaiming Jubilee: Preaching That Sets Women Free, Jennifer Michelle Benson Moran
Doctor of Ministry Theses
In Luke 4, Jesus outlines his mission: to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and free the oppressed. Yet the marginalization and oppression of women have been structurally normalized throughout history, both in secular society as well as Christian culture. Through historical, cultural, biblical, exegetical, hermeneutical, and homiletical analysis, this study posits that a jubilee homiletic is a crucial part of embodying liberation from textual interpretations that have prioritized those who are privileged, so that women may reclaim scripture as a source of freedom.
Harvesting Hope: Biblical Preaching With People Of The Land, 2020 Luther Seminary
Harvesting Hope: Biblical Preaching With People Of The Land, Catherine Belles
Doctor of Ministry Theses
This project seeks to customize generic preaching skills to better serve rural Midwest churches in a time of great transition. “What seeds are we planting that our harvest will be hope in Jesus Christ? Does the Word of God affect our response, and are we transformed by that change, so that hope becomes part of our faith DNA?” Seeking to encourage prophetic visioning, preacher, leaders, and members to live into God’s ongoing new creation. Harvest is a major theme in rural communities and biblical narrative, a metaphor of grace and judgement. Preachers are encouraged to glean the faith stories of …
Do You Hear What I Hear? Discernment And Dialogue In A Secular Age, 2020 Luther Seminary
Do You Hear What I Hear? Discernment And Dialogue In A Secular Age, Andrew J. Schlecht
Doctor of Ministry Theses
This Participatory Action Research (PAR) utilized a mixed methods approach to address an adaptive challenge in a Lutheran church in a bedroom community in a small town and rural setting. The research involved implementing PAR interventions that cultivated four spiritual capacities: see, hear, know, and say within the realm of faith formation. Results suggest the Holy Spirit initiated a process of cultural adaptation as participants began reframing their world view, having their missional imagination transformed, discerning the triune God’s active presence, and engaging in dialogue.
Liberated For Mission: Theology Of The Cross Informing A Fresh Missional Imagination, 2020 Luther Seminary
Liberated For Mission: Theology Of The Cross Informing A Fresh Missional Imagination, Pamela M. Marolla
Doctor of Ministry Theses
“How might an action research intervention cultivate a hermeneutic of missio Dei as it relates to baptismal vocation?” This study used mixed methods action research including interventions, questionnaires, Dwelling in the Word, and interviews. Biblical and theological lenses were God’s liberating nature, baptismal vocation, theology of the cross, missio Dei and more. Theoretical lenses were leadership theories, strengths, assets, hospitality, and imaginative interaction. Interventions were a sermon series, dwelling in the word, and contextual leadership. Through these the congregation gained understanding of the liberating nature of God through prophecy, reconciliation, being known, and their own place in missio Dei.

Shattering Stained Glass: Empowering Christian Women To Lead Equitably In The Church And Society, 2020 Seattle Pacific University
Shattering Stained Glass: Empowering Christian Women To Lead Equitably In The Church And Society, Kaila Catalina Materne Creamer Alvarez
Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects
In today's American Christian culture, it has been my observation that women are still feeling the repercussions of Christian traditions and theologies that have an elongated history of neglecting their authority and leadership. After having a decade and a half of experience working within different Christian communities, there has been an overwhelming amount of evidence to support that there is a strong disconnect between the theology of women’s leadership and the physical, practical, and systematic action of engaging them as leaders. Among these narratives is my own. After having served in a leadership role within an evangelical mega church for …

Church Digital Transformation Template, Michael Paulus
SPU Works
This template is based on a “framework for digital wisdom” and three characteristics of a “thriving congregation” as defined by the Lilly Endowment’s Thriving Congregations Initiative. It asks three questions that seek to align digital transformation with key congregational characteristics and a fourth question to identify next steps.

Humility is the prerequisite to a significant dialogue in a postmodern context. It has the ability to transform the dialogue from a debate between opposing parties into a party of fellow travelers in the search for meaning. The truths we find and share in that common endeavor will not be suspect as biased assertions to the benefit of power groups under the cloak of truth, but embraced as common solutions to the problems we face.

The Inseparable Duo: The Holy Spirit And Preaching, Rodney A. Palmer
Faculty Publications
The power of the Holy Spirit is indispensable when crafting and delivering effective sermons. To downplay His role in preaching creates a false dichotomy between the discipline of homiletics and the doctrine of pneumatology. The Holy Spirit plays seven important roles in the life of the preacher, the preparation of a sermon, the preaching moment, and the lives of listeners.
Martin Luther’S Understanding Of Faith In Relation To Infant Baptism, 2020 Andrews University
Martin Luther’S Understanding Of Faith In Relation To Infant Baptism, Francis Gayoba
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
This article explores Martin Luther’s understanding of faith as a means to reconcile the seeming tension between his emphasis on faith in baptism against Roman Catholicism and his de-emphasis on faith against Anabaptism. This tension is most evident in his support of infant baptism despite his belief in sola fide. It is proposed that Luther’s predestinarian understanding of the sovereignty of God influences his perception of the role of faith in baptism, which emphasizes God’s role and de-emphasizes human acts in the ceremony. Luther argues that human faith, while important for the daily application of baptism, cannot be the …

The biblical site of Ataroth mentioned in the book of Numbers was built by the Gadites and destroyed in the mid-9th century BC by king Mesha of Moab. The site contained a temple complex with a sanctuary and several altars. In 2015, a joint team from La Sierra, Andrews, Averett, and Brigham Young Universities continued excavation at the site. Their primary goal was to explore the north, south, and east edges of the temple complex to determine its full extent, its fortifications, and any domestic living spaces in the area. An outer wall was discovered on the southern side of …
