The Influence Of Thomas Aquinas’ Concept Of Createdness On Josef Pieper’S Moral Philosophy, Sarah Slater

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Josef Pieper’s practical moral philosophy can be best understood by reference to the theology of Thomas Aquinas, and specifically Aquinas’ concept of the created human person. Pieper uses Aquinas’ theological anthropology to argue for three actions which respond to the reality of being created: giving assent to having been brought into existence by God, perceiving God and created reality, and pursuing of the end of human life through the practice of the virtues in order to receive beatitude. Pieper’s well-known works on the seven virtues, on leisure, and on festivity rely on the same concepts from Aquinas which Pieper examines …

The Nativity Collection In The Marian Library, Sarah Burke Cahalan 2020 University of Dayton

The Nativity Collection In The Marian Library, Sarah Burke Cahalan

Marian Library Faculty Publications

The Marian Library was founded in 1943 by the Society of Mary, the Catholic religious order which also founded the University of Dayton in 1850. Those two dates are significant because the library was established to mark the centennial of the university’s founding. With exemplary forethought, the Society of Mary allowed seven years to build a library collection so that it would be ready for the official centennial. This deliberate mindset and commitment to education is still apparent today, even as the decline in vocations means fewer Marianists and more laypeople filling the offices on campus. From the beginning, the …

The Virgin Mary: Bridging Muslims And Catholics, Carl Chudy, Sx

The Journal of Social Encounters

This article reflects on Maryam of Islam, and what she may say to the Virgin Mary of Christianity through our sacred scriptures. Beginning with the Qur’an, the focus is on key verses that are relevant to her birth and early life (Q 3:33-37a), the annunciation of ‘Isa (Jesus) (Q 19: 17b-21; 3:45-51), and the birth of ‘Isa (Q 19:22-26).
