Finding Christ In Cinema: Examining Secular Film Theologically, 2017 Ouachita Baptist University
Finding Christ In Cinema: Examining Secular Film Theologically, Evan Wheatley
Honors Theses
For me as a teenager, secular films were merely a form of entertainment. A trip to the movies meant the chance to escape to a “galaxy far, far away,” to stand alongside Harry Potter in his latest confrontation with Lord Voldemort. I did not realize at the time the parallels between the Force in Star Wars, and the Christian God, or how Harry and Voldemort’s cinematic struggle can be seen as an allegory for the fight between good and evil.
At the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, I was introduced to how God can use secular film to challenge our …
Formed In And Called From The Womb, 2017 Brigham Young University
Formed In And Called From The Womb, Dana M. Pike
Faculty Publications
Jeremiah’s call narrative or vocation report includes a clear example of pre-birth divine election:
(1:4) “Now the word of the LORD came to me saying,
(1:5a) ‘Before I formed you in the womb [babbetẹ n] I knew you,
(5b) and before you were born [came forth from the womb/mēreḥem] I consecrated you;
(5c) I appointed you a prophet to the nations’” (Jer. 1:4–5; NRSV).
However, there is ambiguity about the meaning of the phrase “from the womb” and there are persistent questions about the relationship between Jeremiah 1:5a—“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you”—and 1:5b+c, “before you …
The Latter-Day Saint Reimaging Of “The Breath Of Life” (Genesis 2:7), 2017 Brigham Young University
The Latter-Day Saint Reimaging Of “The Breath Of Life” (Genesis 2:7), Dana M. Pike
Faculty Publications
The creation and flood accounts in Genesis in the Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament) contain variations on a phrase commonly translated “the breath of life.” This phrase additionally occurs in some uniquely Latter-day Saint materials relating to creation. After overviewing and analyzing this phrase and its meaning in the Bible, this paper then examines the occurrences of the phrase “the breath of life” in important early Latter-day Saint texts.1 The purpose of this study is to illustrate and explain how and why many Latter-day Saints have come to often employ the phrase “the breath of life,” transforming its traditional …
Women As Agents Of Salvation In The Old Testament: An Appraisal Of Hannah And Abigail In Israel's Early Monarchy (1 Samuel 1-3, 25), 2017 Providence College
Women As Agents Of Salvation In The Old Testament: An Appraisal Of Hannah And Abigail In Israel's Early Monarchy (1 Samuel 1-3, 25), Lazarus Ejike Onuh
Theology Graduate Theses
The women of the Old Testament were not merely ancillary to the men. From the matriarchal era down to the monarchical period, the Old Testament eloquently attests to the equality and shared responsibility between man and woman. The creation of הָֽאָדָם֙ (mankind) in the image and likeness of God confers on both the male and female an ontological equality; an equality that is shown in their joint authority over creation (Genesis 1:27-28). While not denying the fact that the Old Testament can rightly be viewed as a product of predominantly male authors and features a galaxy of male actors, it …
Guiding The Members Of Polkville Baptist Church In Polkville, North Carolina Toward A Greater Awareness Of Their Place In The Body Of Christ, 2017 Gardner-Webb University
Guiding The Members Of Polkville Baptist Church In Polkville, North Carolina Toward A Greater Awareness Of Their Place In The Body Of Christ, Richard Lee Hamrick
Doctor of Ministry Projects
A church-wide emphasis, with preaching and teaching, provided the platform for instilling in members of Polkville Baptist Church a better understanding of the individual's role in the community of faith, the goal being that a greater percentage of members take an active role in the church. The twelve-member research group was tracked individually, and the control group was tracked as a unit. Following the emphasis, care was taken to discover if there were more members involved in the life of the church than before the emphasis. There was a clear growth in understanding and in the number of active members.
The Concept Of Social Justice In The Social Sciences, In The Bible, And In Adventism, 2017 Andrews University
The Concept Of Social Justice In The Social Sciences, In The Bible, And In Adventism, Michelet William
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
"Social justice is included in the mission of God to redeem and restore humanity. While in the early years evangelicals viewed social justice with suspicion, considering it subordinate to evangelism, since the second half of the 20th century, social justice has gained momentum among evangelical Christians who have become favorable to a more holistic approach to mission. William Carey had already set the tone in the 19th century as his work in India included missiological responses to social justice concerns. Other more recent and similarly mission-focused social advocacy work followed, such as the Temperance Movement in early Adventism, the ongoing …

I recall, as a young child, having a number of superstitious assumptions. I remember being afraid of the dark, and at night, as I stood in my doorway, I believed that when I turned off the light switch I had to jump to my bed (for some reason thinking that I would be gobbled up by evil if my feet touched the ground in the darkness). Over time, though, I became less concerned about the dark and also about "evil." Even today, as an adult, I do not think much about evil powers or spirits. I may make a one-off …
Window Shopping And Turf Control, 2017 Simple Church Global Network
Window Shopping And Turf Control, W. Milton Adams
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
"In the past there has been much appropriate emphasis on the laity’s posture of respect toward church leadership. But what matters now is an equal and proactive posture of respect toward the laity. As new methods and new plans spring forth from the laity, cooperation and mutual respect must also spring forth. The result will look and function like a peer relationship. In today’s developing culture, the onus will lie on church leadership to rid themselves pf any turf control and instead develop skills of cheering, funding, and quickly embracing God-honoring lay ministries. So, a call to smooth the way, …

Manifestations Of God: Theophanies In The Hebrew Prophets And The Revelation Of John, Kyle Ronchetto
Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects
This paper looks at the way the book of Revelation describes the hierarchical relationship between God and Christ by recombining the imagery of God from the Hebrew bible. Christ seems at times to be equal to God himself, and at other times to be only an angel serving God. Following a textual analysis of theophanies and angelophanies from three of the Hebrew prophets which form the primary source material of Revelation – Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel, I will explicate the theophanies, angelophanies, and christophanies in Revelation, showing how these purportedly contradictory images are reconcilable.

This paper utilizes different analyses of scripture to argue that a binary gender system is not inherent in Christianity. Contemporary societal norms placed onto Christianity contribute to the oppression of women and those in LGBTQ+ communities.

Making Ritual Strange: The Temple Cult As The Foundation For Tannaitic Discourse On Idolatry, 2017 Brigham Young University - Provo
Making Ritual Strange: The Temple Cult As The Foundation For Tannaitic Discourse On Idolatry, Avram R. Shannon
Faculty Publications
This article examines the Tannaitic conception of the worship of avodah zarah. The term is commonly translated as “idolatry,”but the definition of what constitutes worship of avodah zarah, in m. Sanh. 7:6, is based on a more nuanced notion than simply worship of foreign gods. For the Sages of the Mishnah, worship of avodah zarah involved misuse of objects and rituals associated with the Temple cult, which constituted a betrayal of covenantal loyalty. This means that although the rabbinic laws against the worship of avodah zarah were based on the biblical prohibitions against worshiping other gods, the actual …
Exploring Paul As The Anti-Jonah In Acts, 2017 Ouachita Baptist University
Exploring Paul As The Anti-Jonah In Acts, Collin Battaglia
Honors Theses
Biblical authors often employ literary techniques to communicate their messages with enhanced force. They were not, for example, interested in theology or historiography alone, but also in aesthetics. In other words, their focus was not directed solely on simply presenting information, but also on how the material was presented literarily. Authors would utilize many techniques in their writing such as repetition, chiasms, and typology to connect stories, to emphasize themes, and to flesh out nuanced truths. This paper will argue that Luke, in the Book of Acts, implements the aesthetic technique of allusion and typology to enrich his narrative. More …
The Exoneration Of Job: A Discussion Of The Joban And Yahwistic Speeches, 2017 Ouachita Baptist University
The Exoneration Of Job: A Discussion Of The Joban And Yahwistic Speeches, Robert Edwin "Mack" Mcgehee Iii
Honors Theses
This study aims to determine whether Job, staunchly established as innocent in the prosaic introduction of the book, maintains his blamelessness throughout the lengthy poetic corpus. The speeches of the dominant characters, Job and Yahweh, will be examined in order to determine whether Job is in the end exonerated by Yahweh's poetic words despite the harsh statements made in the man's own speeches.
Deconstructing Theodicy: A Fresher Reading Of The Book Of Job, 2017 Liberty University
Deconstructing Theodicy: A Fresher Reading Of The Book Of Job, Anthony Maynard
Masters Theses
The Book of Job displays well the reality of the human predicament. However, does the Book of Job provide an answer to the problem it so vividly displays: the existence of God and the reality of suffering? This paper is a quest for an answer, which, if correct, is no. The purpose of the book has less to do with an answer for why good people suffer and more to do with exactly what God has done, and continues to do, to rectify suffering, culminating in the Christ event. Stated simply, the Book of Job exists as a harbinger, to …
