Passover In The Gospel Of Luke, Darrell L. Bock 2017 Biola University

Passover In The Gospel Of Luke, Darrell L. Bock

Journal of Messianic Jewish Studies

Te events of the Last Supper are critical as it is the basis for what is commonly known as the Lord’s Supper or Communion. Te Apostle Paul considers this meal to be important as he makes direct reference to the words spoken by Jesus at the table, which most Christians today hear regularly. (1 Cor. 11:23–25)...

We will attempt to answer the question, “What does the first-century Jewish background of the Passover holiday contribute to our understanding of what Jesus did with His disciples at this evidently special meal?” Specifically, we will need to establish if a Passover or Passover-like …

Passover In The Torah, Robert Walter

Journal of Messianic Jewish Studies

...While there are no specific mentions of the Passover in Genesis, there are allusions to the Exodus. Therefore, as we embark on this study of the Passover in the Torah it’s important to examine these Genesis passages to gain a greater understanding of the Passover’s Exodus context.

Making Room: Conversations About Race And Faith Between Members Of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church In Charlotte, Nc And St. John's Baptist Church In Charlotte, Nc, Martha Dixon Kearse

Doctor of Ministry Projects

In this project, the candidate recorded personal stories from members of two different Baptist congregations: Friendship Missionary Baptist Church (a church made up predominantly of members identifying as African-American) and St. John’s Baptist Church (a church made up predominantly of members identifying as Caucasian). Using those recordings, the candidate created a podcast called “Making Room,” and invited participating group members to listen to each other’s stories. In addition, the candidate invited these same group members to participate in conversations about issues of race, especially as they present themselves in Charlotte, NC. The candidate and group members challenged themselves with the …

The Bible And Creationism, Susan L. Trollinger, William Vance Trollinger 2017 University of Dayton

The Bible And Creationism, Susan L. Trollinger, William Vance Trollinger

English Faculty Publications

Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species (1859) marked a significant challenge to traditional understandings of the Bible and Christian theology. Darwin’s theory of organic evolution stood in sharp contrast with the Genesis account of creation, with its six days, separate creations of life forms, and special creation of human beings. More than this, Darwin’s ideas raised enormous theological questions about God’s role in creation (e.g., is there a role for God in organic evolution?) and about the nature of human beings (e.g., what does it mean to talk about original sin without a historic Adam and Eve?)

Of course, what really …

'What Do You Want Me To Do For You?': Request And Relinquishment In Mark 10:35-52, Rebeccah Kay Buell 2017 Seattle Pacific University

'What Do You Want Me To Do For You?': Request And Relinquishment In Mark 10:35-52, Rebeccah Kay Buell

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

The gospels are replete with examples of individuals who approach Jesus with a specific request. Not only are these requests welcomed, but Jesus also instructs his followers on the importance of asking (Matt. 7:7-11; Luke 11:9-13). However, we also see in the gospels that not every request that is brought to Jesus is answered affirmatively. Why, then, the emphasis on asking? Does making requests of Jesus play a larger role than simply receiving or not receiving that which has been requested?
This thesis examines two accounts from the gospel of Mark where Jesus is approached with a specific petition. One …

Jesus-Immanuel: Matthew's Narrative Christology Of Divine Presence, Jacob Michael Carlson 2017 Seattle Pacific University

Jesus-Immanuel: Matthew's Narrative Christology Of Divine Presence, Jacob Michael Carlson

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

Many Christological studies of Matthew’s Gospel, while giving particular attention to titular analyses, fail to account for one of Matthew’s most ingenious and expansive literary devices. In the opening chapter of his narrative, Matthew tells of a messiah who will be called “Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” and also be called “Immanuel, which means God with us.” The entire gospel narrative comes to a close with Jesus-Immanuel standing in the presence of his disciples and saying to them “I am with you always.” That Matthew frames his entire narrative with this Immanuel motif of divine …

The Controverted Little Book Of Revelation 10 And The Shape Of Apocalyptic Mission, George R. Knight 2017 Andrews University

The Controverted Little Book Of Revelation 10 And The Shape Of Apocalyptic Mission, George R. Knight

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"If the contents of the little book of Revelation 10 are controverted, someone forgot to tell the founders of Seventh-day Adventism. William Miller, for example, in 1841 interpreted the little book that would be sweet in the mouth as being opened in 1798 as evidenced by the increased study of Daniel’s prophecies stimulated by events related to the French Revolution and the taking of the Pope captive by General Berthier. And Ellen White couldn’t have been more certain. “The book that was sealed,” she wrote in 1896, “was not the book of Revelation, but that portion of the prophecy of …

A Conviction Of Texts Not Seen: Perceiving Exodus As The Generative Text Of Hebrews, Scott Ronald Moore 2017 University of Denver

A Conviction Of Texts Not Seen: Perceiving Exodus As The Generative Text Of Hebrews, Scott Ronald Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Book of Hebrews has increasingly come to be regarded as a remarkable example of Jewish-Christian scriptural exegesis and biblical intertextuality. Scholars routinely apply terms associated with ancient Jewish exegesis to Hebrews, including "midrash," "gezerah shewa," "qal wahomer," and "synagogue homily." One problem, however, is that most analyses in which Christian views of scripture are operative tend to overlook key elements of Jewish concepts of scripture, particularly with regard to the significance of the Pentateuch. The Pentateuch, or Torah, forms the nucleus of the Scriptures from a Jewish perspective, the first and most important division of …
