From The National Context To Its Margins: When The World Used Literature To Respond To The Great War, Toby Garfitt, Nicolas Bianchi 2017 Magdalen College, Oxford

From The National Context To Its Margins: When The World Used Literature To Respond To The Great War, Toby Garfitt, Nicolas Bianchi

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

By shedding light on some original responses to the Great War that are today hardly known, and by asking the same questions of many works written in contexts which were radically different, this STTCL special issue advocates for a genuinely comparative approach to this literature. Born in a context of nationalist withdrawal, these cultural objects also had a paradoxically wide circulation (due to early translations, commentaries, literary reactions, and so on), which is why study of these apparently isolated writers is so valuable.

“A Few Bars Of The Hymn Of Hate”: The Reception Of Ernst Lissauer’S “Haßgesang Gegen England” In German And English, Richard Millington, Roger Smith

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

“The poem fell like a shell into a munitions depot”: with these words Stefan Zweig recalled the impact made by Ernst Lissauer’s Anglophobic poem “Haßgesang gegen England” (A Chant of Hate Against England) upon first publication in August 1914. The poem’s success derived from the rhetorical power with which it encapsulated a national emotional response to the outbreak of war. In Germany it initiated an outpouring of Anglophobic verse, but lost favor as it became clear that the patriotism it epitomized would not carry the Central Powers to a swift victory. Even after its disappearance from public attention …

From Abstraction To Documentary: Ernst Toller’S Plays As War Dramas, Lisa Marie Anderson 2017 Hunter College, City University of New York

From Abstraction To Documentary: Ernst Toller’S Plays As War Dramas, Lisa Marie Anderson

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This article considers what the plays of Ernst Toller add to our conception of German literature about World War I. It interrogates the relevant themes that emerge in his plays: how the body at war is memorialized; the class divide as an instrument of militarism; and the responsibility to bear both sensory and documentary witness to war events. Though they are more frequently ascribed to Nachkriegsdrama or Heimkehrerdrama, Toller’s plays from 1919-1930 illustrate a broader development in Kriegsliteratur from Expressionist abstraction to a more realistic treatment of historical particulars. Tracing this gradual development helps to further dispel the myth …

Marcelle Capy And The Pacifist Female Voices Amidst The Conflict, Cecilia Benaglia 2017 Johns Hopkins University

Marcelle Capy And The Pacifist Female Voices Amidst The Conflict, Cecilia Benaglia

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This article analyses the writings of French writer and journalist Marcelle Capy (1891–1962), who held an uncommon position in the French intellectual field throughout the First World War. Going against the mainstream French feminist groups, who all prioritized loyalty to the fatherland over pacifism, Capy remained faithful to her socialist and anti-war creed. Although little known to the larger French public, Capy’s double marginality as a woman and as a pacifist makes her work a singular testimony of the war years as well as a significant example of the rejection of the national climate and Union sacrée’s rhetoric. In …

Using Digital Commons To Highlight A Digital Collection: The Adventures Of Sophie, Rebecca Mckown

Digital Initiatives Symposium

This poster will detail the experience of migrating the Sophie Digital Collection of Literary Works by German-Speaking Women from a website into an interactive site on Digital Commons by the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University. The Sophie Project is named for Sophie von LaRoche and includes poetry, fiction, drama and film, song and music composition, essays, nonfiction writings and biographies all in native German language. It will highlight the structure built within Digital Commons to exhibit the richness of the content in the Sophie Collection and the interactive linking within the metadata fields.
