Educational Reinforcements Of And Challenges To Gender Norms In Urban Sri Lanka, 2019 UC San Diego
Educational Reinforcements Of And Challenges To Gender Norms In Urban Sri Lanka, Ruvani Fonseka
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Background:
In 2013, over half of surveyed Sri Lankan men and women expressed gender-inequitable attitudes equating masculinity with violence, and femininity with obedience to men. Gender-inequitable attitudes have been shown to be linked to gender-based violence (GBV) in multiple contexts.
The goal of this research was to identify points of intervention at which programmes and policies could cultivate gender-equitable attitudes among youth in Sri Lanka, with a goal of reducing GBV in adulthood.
Methods:
Over 9 months, the lead author interviewed 18 young adults (ages 18-30) in urban Sri Lanka to understand how their experiences influenced their gender identity, as …
A Model For Developing Interdisciplinary Research Theoretical Frameworks, 2019 Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education
A Model For Developing Interdisciplinary Research Theoretical Frameworks, A. S. Cohenmiller, Elizabeth Pate
The Qualitative Report
Embedded in interdisciplinary research, just as in disciplinary research, are statements of purpose, theoretical frameworks, research questions, reviews of literature, methodology, findings, recommendations, and more However, one of the least understood aspects of interdisciplinary research is the interdisciplinary research (IDR) theoretical framework. This article is intended to serve as a platform for dialogue within and across disciplines about interdisciplinary research and interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks. In addition, it provides a model for developing an IDR theoretical framework through an illustrative example of how an IDR theoretical framework was created and used within a dissertation study. We conclude the article noting critical …

All The Small Things, Talia E. Levitt
Theses and Dissertations
My paintings engage with the history of the still life as a marginalized and antiacademic genre. Rather than fool viewers into believing that there are real objects in front of them, as is the historical intention of trompe l’oeil, I use realistic rendering to emphasize the painting and painter.

Ms – 243: Emma Guffey Miller Photo Albums, Katie Amtower
All Finding Aids
This collection includes three different albums. Two of them are bound in traditional Japanese binding with rice paper; the other may have been constructed to imitate the Japanese bound ones. These albums include Emma Guffey’s travels, from traveling around Japan and returning home periodically. They also include photographs of her time living in Japan. The photographs in this album include many small panorama photographs of nature and architecture, and there is a possibility that these albums include a few early colored photographs.
The first album, labeled “1901-1904,” begins with a few photos of her final year at Bryn Mawr. It …
Erotic Devotional Poetry: Resisting Neoplatonism In Protestant Christianity, 2019 Seattle Pacific University
Erotic Devotional Poetry: Resisting Neoplatonism In Protestant Christianity, Sarah M. Pruis
Honors Projects
A genre best known for its appearance in Eastern religions, erotic devotional poetry uses sensual imagery to access an experience of the divine. Historically, many Christian traditions, excluding the mystical ones, have pushed back against such literature, seeing it as an impure model that degrades divinity by association with the physical, especially in the specific physical ritual of sex. This stance is a hallmark of Protestant Christianity. The idea of a dichotomy and hierarchy between soul and body, though, comes not from theology but from the introduction theologians made between Western philosophy, particularly Platonic Dualism, and Christianity, which was then …
Représentation Paradoxale Du Genre Dans Aïcha Et Clara Sheller, 2019 Cleveland State University
Représentation Paradoxale Du Genre Dans Aïcha Et Clara Sheller, Annie Jouan-Westlund
World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
This article is a study of the paradoxical gender representation in two successful French television series broadcasted on a French public channel between 2005 and 2012. By using the concepts of stereotypes, inverted stereotypes, antistereotypes (Macé, 2007) and gender performances (Butler, 1990), it highlights the articulation of a multicultural and sexual perspective with a conservative and normative gender representation.
Thalassic: Women, Gender, And The Sublime In Relation To Marine Art, 2019 Lesley University
Thalassic: Women, Gender, And The Sublime In Relation To Marine Art, Kelsy Patnaude
MFA in Visual Arts Theses
The sea may be regarded as a source of tranquility as well as one of unsettling trepidation, ambiguous even in its representation. Those who are called to it must be relentless in the face of uncertainty; what awaits them is the immeasurable sublime. Defined in art as a reference to greatness beyond all possibility of control, the sublime invokes an urge to pursue pleasurable terror in the unmanageable. On heavily trafficked and dangerous seas in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the strict gender hierarchy of authority on board ships in seafaring industries was solidified. Thus, the dominance of the male …
Amazones Et Guerrieres Dans L'Reuvre Romanesque De Fatou Diome, 2019 Universitat Potsdam, lnstitut fur Romanistik
Amazones Et Guerrieres Dans L'Reuvre Romanesque De Fatou Diome, Lydia Bauer
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
One enters Fatou Diome's creative work as in a wrestling arena. She features strong female narrators and characters. These, just like amazons, battle against the patriarchal system, unfair treatments and prejudices of all kinds, in order to regain their dignity and freedom. Their weapons are of the intellectual kind such as language and writing. In this article, we examine different kinds of battles featured in Diome's novels by focusing on both plot and narration.

Sillage, Trace, Empreinte: La Migrance Ambulatoire De Fatou Diome, Catherine Mazauric
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
From Le ventre de l'Atlantique and Impossible de grandir to Marianne porte plainte!, going as far back as her early poems and short stories published in journals, Fatou Diome uses recurring patterns of wake, trace and footprints as different forms of physical and ethical engagements in the world. In the process of literary creation, such engagement generates a mobile third location, "a space of migrance" where various sets of cultural heritages and ethical values undergo reformulation. This paper argues that it is in such a space that Diome locates the emergence of a powerful feminine subjectivity which gained its autonomy …
Overstimulated - An Immersive, Multimedia Art Installation, 2019 Union College - Schenectady, NY
Overstimulated - An Immersive, Multimedia Art Installation, Quinn Devlin
Honors Theses
This thesis provides the explanation, inspiration, research and progression of an immersive, multimedia art installation that emulates the idea of a “sexual dystopia.” It explores how our dichotomy of inadequate sex education and hypersexual, gender-based media is resulting in a dystopian sexual reality for women in particular. The work portrays a future world in which sexual and fertility technology is so advanced and accessible that real men and women no longer interact. As a result, women and objects become one in the same.
Female literary icons are over-sexualized to suggest that porn-culture is a by-product of a historical framework that …
Le Féminisme Et La Femme Musulmane En France, 2019 Union College
Le Féminisme Et La Femme Musulmane En France, Anna Elizabeth Gagion
Honors Theses
My French thesis investigates how some definitions of French feminism and particular French feminist movements find themselves oppressing Muslim women. France is a country that has vigorously regulated the separation of Church and State since 1902 legislation that declared “la laïcité” (secularism) obligatory for all public education. In my research I have found that the general belief in France that religion should never have any bearing on political decisions has been beneficial to most French citizens, but it also appears to oppress a number of Muslim women, as witnessed by the on-going debate surrounding the headscarf ban in French public …
Whose Land Of The Free? Latina Transgender Immigrants In The United States, 2019 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
Whose Land Of The Free? Latina Transgender Immigrants In The United States, Luis R. Alvarez-Hernandez
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Transgender women from Latin America are driven to migrate to the United States in pursuit of a place where they can escape violence and discrimination. However, their experience in the United States continues to be one of oppression. Transgender Latina immigrants in the United States are the target of systematic oppression and interpersonal violence that affect their overall health and well-being. These experiences have led many transgender Latina immigrants to assume leadership roles and to organise social movements in demand for their human rights and dignity in the United States. Recommendations are provided for community leaders, policymakers, and academics.

Repression And Resistance: A Social History Of The Gay Social Movement Of Tijuana, México 1980-1993, Jesse Anguiano
Dissertations
Social movements are shaped by the historical context in which they emerge and provide a window to understand how collective action develops. The literature on social movements suggests that macro factors such as political climate and dominant social scripts affect the direction of a social movement. However, examining solely the macro perspectives on a movement reveals only part of how and why groups mobilize. This dissertation uses historical and archival resources to document the social history of Gay men living in Tijuana, México. This research is guided by a main research question: What explains the successful and ongoing mobilization of …

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
A conversation with Phyllis Chesler about Women and Madness, 47 years after publication, conducted by Jody Raphael. Chesler discusses her motive for writing Women and Madness and its early reception. She reflects on changes and lack of changes in views and treatment of women by society and the mental health system in the years since its publication. Her feminist analysis now includes Islamic fundamentalism, prostitution, and surrogacy, which are not always politically correct views among feminists today.

The Real Period Stain: Menstrual Stigma And Its Pressures In South Asia, Ila Mostafa
Celebration of Learning
This research project looks to answer the question: How does menstrual stigma in rural and urban Bangladesh affect women’s access to menstrual health care?
The research question was borne from personal experiences with menstrual stigma and seeing it firsthand in many areas of Bangladesh. These firsthand experiences come from women whom I interviewed in urban and village locations in Bangladesh in 2017. The research question looks to explore how women feel about seeking help for or talking about their menstrual issues. In asking this question, I want to explore what is at stake for women due to the powerful presence …
