งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์สองประการ ประการแรกเพื่อศึกษาอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในนวนิยาย จีนเรื่อง “เทียนถางซฺว่านถายจือเกอ” ประการที่สองเพื่อวิเคราะห์อุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในนวนิยายจีน เรื่อง “เทียนถางซฺว่านถายจือเกอ” เปรียบเทียบกับการแปลเพื่อการสื่อสารในฉบับแปลภาษาไทยเรื่อง “ลำนำกระเทียม” ผลการศึกษาพบว่า อุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในนวนิยายจีน “เทียนถางซฺว่านถายจือเกอ” สามารถ แบ่งออกเป็นสองประเภทหลัก ได้แก่ มโนอุปลักษณ์สิ่งมีชีวิตและมโนอุปลักษณ์สิ่งไม่มีชีวิต มโนอุปลักษณ์ส่วนใหญ่ที่พบคือมโนอุปลักษณ์สิ่งมีชีวิต มโนอุปลักษณ์ดังกล่าวที่พบทั้งสองสะท้อนถึง วัฒนธรรมด้านต่าง ๆ ของชาวจีน เช่น ชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ สิ่งแวดล้อม สภาพภูมิอากาศ และความคิดและ ความเชื่อ เป็นต้น จากการเปรียบเทียบอุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ในต้นฉบับกับฉบับแปลดังกล่าวข้างต้น พบการแปล สองประเภทหลัก ได้แก่ 1) การแปลที่พยายามรักษารูปแบบการใช้อุปลักษณ์ของต้นฉบับและ 2) การ แปลแบบเอาความ การแปลที่พยายามรักษารูปแบบการใช้อุปลักษณ์ของต้นฉบับสามารถแบ่งออกเป็น (1) แปลตรงและภาษาไทยใช้ตัวเปรียบเดียวกัน (2) แปลตรงแต่ภาษาไทยไม่ได้ใช้ตัวเปรียบเดียวกันและ (3) แปลตรงบางส่วน ส่วนการแปลแบบเอาความสามารถแบ่งออกเป็น (1) แปลแบบอธิบายความและ (2) แปลด้วยถ้อยคำ ภาษาไทยในลักษณะเดียวกัน จากการศึกษาพบว่าส่วนใหญ่ผู้แปลใช้การแปลแบบ เอาความ เนื่องจากวัฒนธรรมที่แตกต่างกันระหว่างไทยกับจีนทำให้อุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ของจีนต่างกับ ไทย รองลงมาได้แก่การแปลตรงและภาษาไทยใช้ตัวเปรียบเดียวกัน เพราะแม้วัฒนธรรมส่วนใหญ่ แตกต่างกัน แต่อุปลักษณ์เชิงมโนทัศน์ก็มีความคล้ายคลึงกันอยู่บ้างหรือการใช้อุปลักษณ์ของต้นฉบับจีน สื่อความหมายได้เห็นภาพตรงไปตรงมาที่ผู้อ่านชาวไทยเข้าใจได้ และยังรวมถึงการที่ผู้แปลต้องการรักษา อรรถรสของเรื่องจึงต้องการคงอุปลักษณ์ในต้นฉบับไว้

This article challenges three common assumptions about Chinese socialist-era dance culture: first, that Mao-era dance rarely circulated internationally and was disconnected from international dance trends; second, that the yangge movement lost momentum in the early years of the People’s Republic of China (PRC); and, third, that the political significance of socialist dance lies in content rather than form. This essay looks at the transformation of wartime yangge into PRC folk dance during the 1950s and 1960s and traces the international circulation of these new dance styles in two contexts: the World Festivals of Youth and Students in Eastern Europe, and …

This paper attempts to draw a comparison between Derrida’s idea of “trace” (in connection to his more famous ideas of différance, supplement, and deconstruction) and the idea of dao in classical Daoism (Laozi and Zhuangzi). I explore the viability of applying Derrida’s thoughts with regard to “trace” to Daoism. It is argued that if dao is read in a non-metaphysical way, then the Derridean idea of “trace” will show large overlaps with dao. I then try to show how, despite some obvious differences, a “trace” reading of dao enables a clearer understanding of dao that would see it not as …

Luxurious Surfaces: Chinese Decorative Arts from the Fifteenth to the Early Twentieth Century is a highly anticipated exhibition that highlights student learning in the art history program. The curators, William Caterham ’20, Ashley Jeffords ’20, Merlyn Maldonado Lopez ’22, Sarah Paul ’22, James Raphaelson ’21, Megan Reimer ’22, Shannon Zeltmann ’21 and Tianrun Zhao ’20, are students enrolled in the Art History Method class in Fall 2019. Hong Kong: a city characterized by Jackie Chan, kung fu, and its surprising “in-betweenness.” Not quite Eastern and not quite Western, Hong Kong has been placed in a unique position due to its recent handover from Great Britain to China. As a result of this handover, the people of Hong Kong have displayed various attitudes towards their previous, foreign system of democratic government and their new, Communist system of government. Uwe Kolbe is one of the major German poets of his generation. Both part of the dissident scene in East Germany and, at the same time, fiercely independent, he early on reworked literary tradition, detailed observation, and personal experience into poems that clearly express his own poetic vision in a distinct voice.
