The Discourse Of Capitalist Class And Public Policy In The Handling Of Covid-19 Pandemic In Indonesia, Adam Amin Bahar, Kacung Marijan, Antun Mardiyanta
Jurnal Politik
In the early period of handling the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia, the Indonesian government prioritized the economy and health sectors. This study argues that these government actions and policies are heavily influenced by discourse from the capitalist class. This study aims to discuss the articulation of several different discursive elements of the capitalist class in the early period of handling the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia and its impact on public policy. This study focuses on two capitalist classes, namely medical and non-medical capitalists. This study found that the discursive elements from the government on these two significant issues had in …

A Socio-Psychological Model Of Urban Millennial Postgraduate Students’ Votes: Indonesia 2014 And 2019 Presidential Elections, Dyah Permana Erawaty, Ummi Salamah
Jurnal Politik
The 2019 presidential election showed many swing voters between the candidates who battled for the second time. This study seeks to understand the cause behind voters’ decisions to switch their voters and how millennial voters with postgraduate education backgrounds swing their votes. This study treats the votes cast by urban millennial postgraduate students as its unit of analysis. Additionally, it aims to find out whether social media has contribution to switch votes. We employed the Columbian and Michigan approach to the socio-psychological model as our conceptual framework and incorporated a modification of the concept of mass self-communication, which includes the …

This paper analyses the Local Government elections (Pilkada) in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to its postponement by looking at three critical aspects in the electoral management framework decision-making process, service outputs, and service outcomes framed. Some findings of this paper are: first, decision making for conducting the Pilkada 2020 was politically uneasy; second, good quality of service outputs from Pilkada 2020 was signed by convenience dimension which can be captured by voter compliance on health protocols in the polling station; third, the best evaluation for service outcomes is coming from the high percentage of voters turn out …

Natural Resource Management And Institutional Dynamics: Myanmar And Indonesia In Comparative Perspective, Salsabila Fitristanti, Ali Muhyidin
Jurnal Politik
Natural resource management in the conflict area has raised a debate on how institutions adapt to conflict conditions. This paper utilizes Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework provided by Ratner by conducting a multi-case comparative specifying on the sub-national in Kachin (Myanmar) and Papua (Indonesia). The analysis focuses on how the institutional dynamics relate to collective action in the mining operation during the ongoing conflict. The empirical investigation shows that the different results occurred due to the diverse decentralization arrangement. The case in Kachin indicates some degree of difficulties in the decentralization arrangement. This condition raises the lack of transparency …

Power-Sharing As The Key Of Secessionist Conflict Resolution In Developing Democratic Countries, Wasisto Raharjo Jati
Jurnal Politik
This article explains how power-sharing could determine conflict resolution in develo¬ping states, particularly in developing countries. This scheme offers a win-win solution between state actors and the separatist movements to curb conflict and initiate pe¬ace-building at the grassroots level. Using a quantitative analysis that employed data¬sets from Power-Sharing Event Dataset (PSED) and Implementation of Pacts Dataset (IMPACT), this article notably reveals two important findings. First, the most promising power-sharing schemes are territorial and political power-sharing. Furthermore, the preliminary talk about ideal power-sharing consensus between the state actors and rebel groups is important to determine the outcome of power-sharing policies. Finally, …

The Logic Of Negative Appeals: Graphic Imagery, Affective Empathy, And Foreign Development Aid, A. Burcu Bayram, Marcus Holmes
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The use of negative visual imagery of the poor to conjure feelings of pity, guilt, and empathy (also called “poverty porn”) is premised on an emotional mechanism that is supposed to elicit compassion and giving behavior, and yet the very emotional nature of the response to this kind of negative imagery can have the exact opposite effect by evoking compassion fatigue and psychological numbing. Our study interrogates this puzzle. Leveraging original data from survey experiments, we show that exposure to negative and personalized images of aid recipients in despair actually increases support for foreign development aid. In contrast, descriptive statistical …

Lucius Junius Brutus is the token founder of the roman office of consul. The establishment of the office of consul firmly instills that the republic is ruled for the good of the people rather than factious interests. This paper discusses how the establishment of the office arose, the history and political significance leading up to its establishment, and the results from it. This paper will focus on the virtues of the office of consul, political benefits of division of power in the executive, while focusing specifically on the first consul Brutus, and the role he plays in strengthening the republic.

Examining A Natural Duty Of Justice And Its Implications, Taylor M. Belknap

John Rawls crafts a natural duty of justice to legitimize a duty to obey and support a just political institution. In creating this natural duty, Rawls assumes an objective standard of justice, which has significant implications on his natural duty. Political institutions often have aspects of justice and injustice, and in this paper I examine the implications of this gradient of justice and how it affects the resulting duty that Rawls identifies. In addition to this examination, the consequences of an imperfect duty resulting from a political institution which is not perfectly just will also be addressed and Rawls’ principle, …

The presidency of Trump has produced an increasing sense that we are possibly moving into a period of fascism in the United States. In this essay, we wish to look closely at conditions which define this current political period by taking seriously Max Horkheimer’s plea to see the necessary relation of capitalism to protofascist potentials and fascist aspirations within our liberal democratic context. Drawing upon the work of Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, and others, we will look more closely at the particular political economic conditions that underlie the development of our one-dimensional society, in which “totalitarian” economic-technical control, rampant consumerism, …

This dissertation considers how the temporal remains of the Age of Discovery and its doctrine persist in a racial-geographical ranking of human and non-human, terrestrial and planetary life and worth. Across this work, I interpret a series of historical moments and their objects of speculative geographic cultural production: a state mapping program, a painting, a biomedical project, a de-monumenting protest action. As repositories of codified belief and repertoires of Discovery’s political and affective modes of racialized domination, I read these materials from the Colombian archives of coloniality and liberalism to illuminate their implications for Colombia’s national becoming as a liberal …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In the past 10 years Hungary has gone through some major systematic changes since the Orban administration took office. The implementations of the Orban government serve the benefits and power of his party and aim to limit the freedom of Hungarian citizens. Orban, throughout these changes, emphasizes the importance of preserving the Hungarian national identity, which he defines as far-right conservative christian values and takes control over everything that does not fit under this definition. This thesis argues that the Hungarian government is becoming increasingly dictatorial under the Orban administration which not only challenges the life of Hungarian citizens but …

The Federalist Papers' Account Of Human Nature, Jeffrey P. Smith
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This paper is an analysis of the account of human nature found in The Federalist Papers. This interpretation assumes The Federalist is a work of political rhetoric and advocacy, but also one of genuine significance as political science and philosophy. As a book, The Federalist is a coherent whole, which offers a coherent account of human nature, despite the collective nature of its authorship, the time pressures of its publication, and the piecemeal nature of its workmanship. This understanding of human nature is the thread which runs through all its analysis and numbers. Its arguments asserting the inadequacies of …

Manumission In Virginia: The Anti-Slavery Legacy Of John Lynch, Stephen Langeland
Liberty University Journal of Statesmanship & Public Policy
This paper is in no way an apology for the institution of slavery in any form. In fact, it is a reiteration of Biblical doctrine and natural rights philosophy that posit all humans are created equal. The institution of slavery knew few bounds throughout recorded history and was as ubiquitous and durable as the activities of marriage or warfare, practiced by every culture and religion (Drescher 2009, 7-8, 12-39). Biblical text is devoid of specific prohibition against slavery, a fact sadly used as justification for its continuation. The Quakers, however, were one of the few religious groups who invoked Scriptural …

Covid-19 Lockdowns Are Central Planning, Stephen Langeland
Liberty University Journal of Statesmanship & Public Policy
The panic surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic led politicians to implement lockdowns and issue “stay-at-home” orders that follow in a long line of government attempts over the past century at economic central planning. With only a few notable exceptions among the several states, elected officials and bureaucrats seized on emergency powers afforded them by the onset of the novel coronavirus. In mid-March 2020 the publishing of the now infamous epidemiological models gave governments the sensational information they needed to get the wheels of government planners turning. The present government-induced crisis once again demonstrates that the intellectuals of the ruling class responsible …

In this article, I argue that the election and inauguration of President Biden should not be a moment of celebration for any scholar, activist, or individual committed to ending the white supremacist empire of America, especially in relation to his condemnation of the January 6th white supremacist rioters as “domestic terrorists.” However, I believe it is for a different reason than much of the current discourse suggests from many progress scholars and journalists. The current line many progressive scholars and activists cite as the reason to avoid calling white supremacists “terrorists” has been because they fear such language will …
