Managing Political And Investment Risk In The International Oil And Gas Industry, Steven Alfred Mucci 2015 University of Missouri-St. Louis

Managing Political And Investment Risk In The International Oil And Gas Industry, Steven Alfred Mucci

Dissertations

The effectiveness with which political and investment risk are managed in the oil and gas industry are important for several reasons. First, oil and gas are essential for sustaining current economic activity and promoting economic growth. Second, the balance between supply and demand determines the price of oil and gas. Therefore the price and availability of oil and natural gas are also matters of national security. Third, the search for a secure supply of oil and gas affects the political, military and economic relations between countries. This study addresses four questions. What institutions and strategies are available for managing political …

Examining The Nature Of Socratic Citizenship: An Inquiry Into The Voegelinian Conception Of Consciousness, Emma Christine Fontenot 2015 University of Southern Mississippi

Examining The Nature Of Socratic Citizenship: An Inquiry Into The Voegelinian Conception Of Consciousness, Emma Christine Fontenot

Master's Theses

This thesis explores Socrates as the paradigmatic citizen through Eric Voegelin’s theory of consciousness. While scholars tend to ground the source of Socrates’ civic behavior in the self, I maintain that his daimonion is the very essence of his citizenship. Illustrating that spiritual openness endows him with the highest level of consciousness within the polis, I argue that Socrates’ efforts to democratize truth are the direct result of his adherence to divine authority. In doing so, I assert that he is neither a self-interested civic actor nor an atheist. By examining Platonic philosophy through the lens of Voegelinian thought I …

Explaining Legislative Productivity: Evaluating The Effects Of Polarization And Divided Government In A Cross-Sectional Study Of State Legislatures, Mike Kistner '15 2015 Illinois Wesleyan University

Explaining Legislative Productivity: Evaluating The Effects Of Polarization And Divided Government In A Cross-Sectional Study Of State Legislatures, Mike Kistner '15

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

Despite a wealth of literature on the causes of gridlock in Congress, there is a lack of comparative work at the state level exploring whether lawmaking in state legislatures functions similarly. Operating under a theoretical framework assuming polarization and divided government are the primary obstacles to legislative success, and controlling for majority seat share, I test the determinants of legislative productivity with an original dataset consisting of 31 states. I operationalize legislative productivity using a content analysis of editorials from each state during the 2009-2010 legislative sessions to identify pressing political issues, and then determine how many of these issues …

Dollars And Sense: Does Economic Self-Interest Or Emotional Attachment Better Explain Vote Choice?, Daniel M. Truesdale '15 2015 Illinois Wesleyan University

Dollars And Sense: Does Economic Self-Interest Or Emotional Attachment Better Explain Vote Choice?, Daniel M. Truesdale '15

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper seeks to understand voter choice using a dichotomous model differentiating between economic self-interest and emotional attachment. Using survey data from the American National Election Studies (ANES) database, this paper first utilizes a unique scaling technique and then a pseudo R-Square method to determine which independent variable, economic self-interest or emotional attachment (affect), contains more explanatory power in predicting voter choice. The findings support the hypothesis that economic self-interest contains the most explanatory power in predicting voter choice, though the degree of difference varies across elections.

Judicial Practice Makes Perfect: Explaining Asylum Recognition In The European Union, Casey Plach, '15 2015 Illinois Wesleyan University

Judicial Practice Makes Perfect: Explaining Asylum Recognition In The European Union, Casey Plach, '15

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

Vast disparities in asylum recognition rates have persisted in the European Union despite legislative efforts to standardize the asylum determination process. National judiciaries play an important role in this process and scholars mostly agree that differences in judicial practice pose a challenge to the harmonization of recognition rates. However, no study has specifically analyzed the relationship between these two variables. The aim of this research is to determine whether differences in judicial practice account for the variation in asylum recognition rates in the EU. To observe these differences, precedent relating to three areas of the refugee determination process is identified …

Do The Means Change The End? The Effect Of All Mail Ballot Systems And Same-Day Voter Registration On Turnout, Annie Kehler '15 2015 Illinois Wesleyan University

Do The Means Change The End? The Effect Of All Mail Ballot Systems And Same-Day Voter Registration On Turnout, Annie Kehler '15

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

This research examines the effects of certain institutional mechanisms on voter turnout, in order to provide a possible policy prescription for the ever-decreasing voter turnout in the United States. The voter turnout of general elections from 1994-2012 was measured state by state, comparing those that have instituted same-day registration and/or all mail ballot systems to those that have not, using an ordinary least squares regression model. There was an additional control variable of the number of top-of-ticket races on the ballot in each year, in addition to the institutional variables. The results suggest that the use of same-day registration and …

Can’T Buy Our Love: Prime Minister Harold Wilson And His Attempts To Woo The Beatles, Austin Aldag '15 2015 Illinois Wesleyan University

Can’T Buy Our Love: Prime Minister Harold Wilson And His Attempts To Woo The Beatles, Austin Aldag '15

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

The monumental influence of the Beatles, their music, and “Beatlemania” deeply penetrated into many facets of British lifestyle during a substantial portion of the 1960s, and the dynamic political landscape of this waning world power was no exception. The resurgence of the Labour Party in Parliament, following fourteen long years of being situated in the opposition, simultaneously materialized during the reign of the Beatles. Subsequent to the 1964 General Election, the Labour Party narrowly achieved a legislative majority in Parliament despite achieving a total net gain of fifty-six seats.1 Leading this movement and a man who advocated for a …

Tackling Nigeria's Security Challenges: Negotiation Or What With Boko Haram?, Phillip E. Agbebaku, William E. Odion, Mary Fadal Edokpa 2015 Ambrose Alli University

Tackling Nigeria's Security Challenges: Negotiation Or What With Boko Haram?, Phillip E. Agbebaku, William E. Odion, Mary Fadal Edokpa

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

For many years now Nigeria has been facing a plethora of security challenges. This includes the Niger Delta militants who engaged in disrupting oil exploration by kidnapping oil workers in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Their grievance was that the region that produces the wealth of the nation was neglected in terms of development. They wanted a better deal. The conflict situation improved with the declaration of Amnesty by the Yar’Adua administration. Another security challenge was posed by the Boko Haram insurgency. Boko Haram reared its ugly head in full force in 2011. The insurgency concentrated in the North …

Conservatives And The End Of The Draft, Shad Ashcroft 2015 Pittsburg State University

Conservatives And The End Of The Draft, Shad Ashcroft

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

While conservatives of all stripes generally supported the Vietnam War, particularly at its onset, I will show that the debate to end conscription reveals a rift between traditional conservatives who supported the draft and libertarian conservatives who opposed it (while generally supporting the war). Furthermore, though they shared the goal of ending the draft, libertarian conservatives and New Left protesters agreed on little else. The protesters' primary goal was to prevent future wars like Vietnam. Conservatives, on the other hand, embraced the all-volunteer army in part to maintain executive branch independence in foreign affiars.

Implicit Association Of Gender And Politics, Bryonna Bowen, Jessica Preece 2015 Brigham Young University

Implicit Association Of Gender And Politics, Bryonna Bowen, Jessica Preece

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The gender gap in participation, capability, and interest in politics has been widely researched. However, in this project we examined whether or not people implicitly identify men more strongly than women with politics. Furthermore, I was interested to determine to what extent everyday media exposure, particularly focusing on a specific gender, could influence an individual’s implicit biases. Mock newspaper articles, with either male or female political subjects, were used to further determine the effect of media content on people’s gender biases. While self-reported prejudices may be inconsistent and untrustworthy, I used the implicit association test (IAT) to assess the patterns …

Local Realities Of Philanthrocapitalism, Anissa Pemberton 2015 Augustana College - Rock Island

Local Realities Of Philanthrocapitalism, Anissa Pemberton

Celebration of Learning

In this analysis of interviews with nine not-for-profit employees, I argue that fear and tradition in the funding priorities of private foundations has the long-term result of limiting the local social service sector substantially. Particularly, the effect of philanthrocapitalism is felt within those topics that are deemed by the foundations to be too unstable or new to provide monetary assistance. Exasperating these realities is the missing stability of government funding for new organizations. In the Quad Cities, the main segments currently feeling the most significant financial strain are immigrants and refugees. In this ethnographic interview study of nonprofit employees, I …

US Government Documents Related to Indigenous Nations

This Memorandum of Agreement, dated May 6, 2015, from the United States (US) Department of the Interior, the US Department of the Army (Civil Works), and the US Department of Indian Affairs, outlines the process by which a portion of land that was taken from the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation for construction and operation of the Garrison Dam be returned to the Three Affiliated Tribes. The authority of this return is granted by the Fort Berthold Mineral Restoration Act of 1984 (Public Law 98-602).

Negotiating The Federal Accommodation: Minorities And The Issue Of The National Question In Nigeria, Tunde Agara 2015 Ambrose Alli University

Negotiating The Federal Accommodation: Minorities And The Issue Of The National Question In Nigeria, Tunde Agara

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

Ethnic minority tensions and agitations in Nigeria are important features of the on-going struggle to resolve the “national question” through convening the Sovereign National Conference, all in a bid to dialogue and negotiate a true federal system that incorporates and accommodate the minorities within the federal system. This paper suggests that the minority issue in Nigeria is deeply rooted in the complex triad of pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial historical and structural processes that have foisted and institutionalized the oppressive hegemony of the country’s three major ethnics over the minorities. To further illuminate this perspective, we have adopted Edward Azar’s Protracted …

The Negotiation Issues In Nigeria's Post-Independence Conflicts, Layi Egunjobi, Ndubuisi O. W. Odiaka 2015 Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria

The Negotiation Issues In Nigeria's Post-Independence Conflicts, Layi Egunjobi, Ndubuisi O. W. Odiaka

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

Nigeria which typifies the condition in most African countries, is bedeviled by disputes and conflicts which impact so negatively on the country’s economic growth and quality of life indices. Disputes usually range from local, tribal, and religious skirmishes to national, regional, and international engagements. These naturally involve negotiations in form of agreements, treaties, dialogues, and national conferences which may be conventional or cultural. At the same time, Nigeria’s nationhood is still being questioned and even threatened 100 years after unification and 54 years after independence. The basic argument in this paper is negotiation as a factor may have played a …

Getting On The Agenda: The Influence Of Local Civil Society Organizations During Pre-Negotiation, David R. Andersen-Rodgers 2015 California State University, Sacramento

Getting On The Agenda: The Influence Of Local Civil Society Organizations During Pre-Negotiation, David R. Andersen-Rodgers

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

This article examines the types of strategies that different local civil society organizations use to get their issues addressed during a peace negotiation. Previous research has shown that the inclusion of civil society groups in a negotiation improves the likelihood for a durable peace. This paper argues that during conflict civil society organizations make a number of strategic choices that then affect their ability to get their societal interests placed on the agenda. These strategies are partially dictated by when and why the civil society group organized, the levels and types of advocacy that they choose to engage in during …
