Egypt’S 2011–2012 Parliamentary Elections: Voting For Religious Vs. Secular Democracy?, H. Ege Ozen 2017 CUNY College of Staten Island

Egypt’S 2011–2012 Parliamentary Elections: Voting For Religious Vs. Secular Democracy?, H. Ege Ozen

Publications and Research

This study investigates whether individuals’ attitudes towards democracy and

secular politics have any influence on voting behavior in Egypt. Based on data

from a survey conducted immediately after the Egyptian parliamentary elections

in January 2012, this study finds that Egyptians’ attitudes towards democratic

governance were quite negative around the parliamentary elections, yet Egyptians

still endorsed democracy as the ideal political system for their country. However,

empirical findings suggest that support for democracy has a limited impact on

electoral results. On the other hand, the main division in Egyptian society around

the first free and fair parliamentary elections was the religious-secular …

The Philosophical Worth Of Liberal Peacebuilding, Muhammad Waffa Kharisma 2017 School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies, University of Bristol

The Philosophical Worth Of Liberal Peacebuilding, Muhammad Waffa Kharisma

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

The concept of Liberal Peacebuilding is often associated with the failure of pushing liberalisation in war-torn failed states: the practice of liberal peacebuilding as a liberal project instead of a peacebuilding effort. The essay starts with breaking down the basic premises of a liberal peacebuilding and its ideological drive. Then, it identifies and evaluates the critics and alternatives to liberal peacebuilding. The essay sees that the implementation of fixed standard peacebuilding packages in vastly different scenarios and countries is the consequence of practicing liberal peacebuilding as a liberal project. This essay argues that liberal peacebuilding is worth saving if it …

Aplikasi Soft System Methodology Dalam Analisis Diplomasi Angkatan Laut Indonesia Melalui Pengiriman Satgas Maritim Tni Pada Misi Unifil Mtf, Trio Sirmareza 2017 Department of Defense Diplomacy, Indonesia Defense University

Aplikasi Soft System Methodology Dalam Analisis Diplomasi Angkatan Laut Indonesia Melalui Pengiriman Satgas Maritim Tni Pada Misi Unifil Mtf, Trio Sirmareza

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

This article discusses Indonesia's participation in UNIFIL MTF, as a way for the country to exercise its naval diplomacy. Using Ken Booth's theory of naval diplomacy as analytical framework and employing the Soft System Methodology model, this article seeks to explain Indonesia's motives for joining UNIFIL MTF, namely the maintenance of the world peace as stipulated by the country's constitution and concomitantly, Indonesia's interest to enhance its global role as middle power. The application of naval diplomacy and Soft System Methodology in this article provides a theoretical and methodological-informed analysis in scrutinising Indonesia's participation in international peacekeeping operation. By doing …

Understanding The Body Of Christ: A Literature Review On Roman Catholic Church In International Relations, Michael Joseph Kristiono 2017 Department of International Relations, University of Indonesia

Understanding The Body Of Christ: A Literature Review On Roman Catholic Church In International Relations, Michael Joseph Kristiono

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

The paper is a review article on how recent International Relations (“IR”) literature perceives the Roman Catholic Church. It attempts to show how the actorness of the Church is being represented on IR literatures written especially at post-Cold War era. The time frame is chosen because attention towards transnationalism and its corresponding actors has only emerged from that period of time, thus enabling scholarly discussion on religious actors. Firstly, this article is going to trace early mention of the Catholicism and IR. Then, it is going to explain how current IR scholars analyse the Church. It is found that majority …

Analisis Strategi Keamanan Energi Cina Dalam Upaya Penurunan Emisi Karbon Melalui Pendekatan Konstruktivisme, Hidayat Chusnul Chotimah 2017 International Relations Department, Yogyakarta Technological University

Analisis Strategi Keamanan Energi Cina Dalam Upaya Penurunan Emisi Karbon Melalui Pendekatan Konstruktivisme, Hidayat Chusnul Chotimah

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

The Chinese government has finally committed itself to reducing carbon emissions after having for years refused to limit its energy consumption levels due to industrialising efforts and economic development needs. The primary reason behind the policy change is the severe, life-threatening environmental damage resulted from industrialisation processes. The Chinese government has now set out strategic measures to safeguard its energy security by harmonising its climate change and economic policies. This is done to achieve carbon emission reduction through energy conservation and green economy development by developing renewable energy such as nuclear energy, hydropower, wind power, solar power and other undiscovered …

Asean As 'Compartmentalized Regionalism': A Preliminary Discussion, Shofwan Al Banna Choiruzzad 2017 Department of International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia

Asean As 'Compartmentalized Regionalism': A Preliminary Discussion, Shofwan Al Banna Choiruzzad

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

This article tries to offer a new ontological perspective to scrutinize ASEAN as a form of 'compartmentalized regionalism'. In contrast to the general view of ASEAN diplomatic practitioners and academics who see the history of ASEAN as an evolution of a regional project that in the political and security dimension becomes a multidimensional regional region through 'widening and deepening', the idea of 'compartmental regionalism' replaces the development of ASEAN as the development of two separate regionalism projects in a single entity. Both regionalism projects have different settings, supplemented by different actors, and work based on differing logic. Thus, the development …

Slavery, Civil War, And Contemporary Public Opinion In The South, Madison R. Swiney 2017 Eastern Kentucky University

Slavery, Civil War, And Contemporary Public Opinion In The South, Madison R. Swiney

Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship

This paper is an empirical extension of Avidit Acharya, Matthew Blackwell, and Maya Sen’s piece (forthcoming), “A Culture of Disenfranchisement: How American Slavery Continues to Affect Voting Behavior.” In their project, Acharya, Blackwell and Sen (forthcoming) show that the counties that had more slaves versus free population in the nineteenth century are more likely to exhibit conservative attitudes in contemporary elections. I am extending this argument by measuring potential influence of Civil War battlegrounds on recent voting patterns and political predispositions. My project finds further support for Acharya, Blackwell and Sen’s study on the predictive power …

What Is Opposition Good For?, Betul Demirkaya 2017 Washington University in St. Louis

What Is Opposition Good For?, Betul Demirkaya

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Democratically elected governments may sometimes give in to pressures from extreme constituents thereby failing to adopt policies congruent with the median voter's preferences. This situation is exacerbated by the inability or the reluctance of voters to acquire information about the consequences of policy alternatives. Opposition parties, in principle, could help remedy this problem using the prerogatives at their disposal such as participating in legislative debates and proposing bills, amendments or no confidence motions. In practice, however, they may have incentives to mislead the voters for policy or election purposes. Given the critical role of opposition parties to remedy problems of …

The Determinants Of Americans' Attitudes Of Representation, Patrick Delonjay Tucker 2017 Washington University in St. Louis

The Determinants Of Americans' Attitudes Of Representation, Patrick Delonjay Tucker

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation evaluates how citizens approach the representational relationship in a polarized world. How, if at all, do citizens’ perceptions of their legislators change when party identification dominates the political landscape? The answer from this study may be surprising to casual observers of American politics. First, I find that Americans’ views of their legislators are dynamic. Using original, nationally representative panel data, I find that perceptions of legislators move a significant amount on both a non-policy and policy dimension. Second, these levels of affect and congruence are systematically responsive to perceptions of legislators’ public efforts and home styles. Even in …

Mcmanus Studies, Teaches International Conflicts., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

Sometimes people in academia get their inspiration from unsuspected sources. That is the case with political scientists such as Dr. Roseanne McManus. “While in middle school I started reading novels by Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler. Reading about the strategic interaction of countries in these books made me interested to learn more both about the former Soviet Union and about how countries interact with each other and how they choose their strategies to get what they want,” she says.

This native of Towson, Maryland, went on to obtain a master’s degree in government and politics at the University of Maryland …

A Mission To Mali Is Already A Lost Opportunity, So Let’S Focus On Afghanistan’S ‘Forgotten War, Erika Simpson 2017 University of Western Ontario (Western University)

A Mission To Mali Is Already A Lost Opportunity, So Let’S Focus On Afghanistan’S ‘Forgotten War, Erika Simpson

Political Science Publications

Erika Simpson and Sakhi Naimpoor argue that Canada's defense efforts should shift focus from a UN peacekeeping mission in Mali to revitalizing its role in Afghanistan. They criticize the Canadian government for delaying its commitment to Mali and suggest that Canada should instead concentrate on training Afghan soldiers and police to ensure stability in a war-torn country. They highlight the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, with the Taliban and ISIS gaining ground since Canada's combat mission ended. The authors contend that re-engaging in Afghanistan would honor the sacrifices made by Canadian forces and help rebuild critical institutions in the region.

Cameras As Weapons Of Resistance: Refugees Disrupting The Colonial Narrative Through Photography, Shannon Elder 2017 Columbia College Chicago

Cameras As Weapons Of Resistance: Refugees Disrupting The Colonial Narrative Through Photography, Shannon Elder

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

This project analyzes the photography project “#RefugeeCameras”, where German photojournalist Kevin McElvaney gave disposable cameras to refugees to document their own experiences. The project includes close examination of the photography collection and considers the photographic depiction of landless people by other landless people in juxtaposition to the concept of the refugee as a ‘terrorist’. The examination of these images will reveal how photographs become a tool that can disrupt ideological stances that harm innocent people such as Islamophobia and fear mongering towards refugees that are deemed a threat by the Trump administration’s Executive Order, “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist …

Bringing The State Home: Neoliberalism In Global Models Of Public Housing, Nicholas Alfino 2017 Columbia College Chicago

Bringing The State Home: Neoliberalism In Global Models Of Public Housing, Nicholas Alfino

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

Global public housing authorities in state versus market capitalism take different approaches to provide housing for multicultural demographics. This capstone project looks at that of New York City and Singapore as case studies of ideologies of welfare, multicultural national identity and public policies representative of their political economies. With special attention paid the spatial relations of ethnic enclaves in both urban environments, focus is placed on a social, lived experience shaped by both 'productivist' versus 'cynical' ideology and privatization versus state authoritarianism. Each political economic system of welfare reaches from larger concepts of national and global economy to the local …

Town Hall Drama: What's All The Gossip About?, McKay Randall 2017 Brigham Young University - Provo

Town Hall Drama: What's All The Gossip About?, Mckay Randall

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

When the new Congress took their seats at the beginning of 2017, Republicans were on a mission to replace Obamacare. To gear up for the legislative struggle, legislators took to the streets and towns of their districts to speak to constituents about Obamacare and other policies. During the first town halls in January and February, Republican legislators found themselves confronted with rowdy and raucous crowds who nearly shouted them down every time they had chance to speak. The News took note of this phenomena in late February and started reporting on the story. The popular headlines from The Washington Post, …

Papers Please: Immigration, Enforcement, And Remittances, Jose A. Rojas-Fallas 2017 Portland State University

Papers Please: Immigration, Enforcement, And Remittances, Jose A. Rojas-Fallas

Student Research Symposium

Immigrants are an understated agent in local economies. Whilst legal immigrants may be accounted for in the macro realm, illegal immigrants are very much an externality. Immigrant agents participate heavily in local economies, almost exclusively, due to their status and the implicit risks associated with it. Immigrants’ decision to migrate towards better economies come with the goal of achieving prosperity that more than likely would not have been possible in their location of origin. A majority of immigrants are heads of households that migrate alone seeking greater wages to support their household. They do this through remittances. These are capital …

Abortion In The Court: The Impact Of Abortion Views On Public Opinion Of The Supreme Court, Robert Heins 2017 Chapman University

Abortion In The Court: The Impact Of Abortion Views On Public Opinion Of The Supreme Court, Robert Heins

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Abortion has long been considered one of the most controversial topics the United States Supreme Court has ruled on. My research examines how one’s opinion on abortion impacts their view of the United States Supreme Court. This analysis will show how much of an impact one policy stance has on the public’s overall view of a much larger institution. To analyze my question, I will utilize American National Election Studies Time Series data from the years 1976, 1988, and 2016. These years will allow me to study the role abortion plays in crafting opinion of the court before the politicization …

Who’S Afraid Of The Big Bad Bot? The American Fear Of Technology In The 21st Century, Callan Keeter 2017 Chapman University

Who’S Afraid Of The Big Bad Bot? The American Fear Of Technology In The 21st Century, Callan Keeter

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The growth and integration of new technology into lifestyles worldwide have many Americans asking questions about privacy and security. Although there are high rewards at stake for governments, corporations, and individuals who embrace technological changes, the risks of these developments are also at the forefront of people’s thoughts. Using the recent data of the Chapman University National Survey of Fears, I examine correlations and means to determine the specific populations in America that fear technology. I go on to detail possible causes of this fear using the available research on the subject. As we move forward further into the 21st …
