Do Weapons Make Warfare? An Instrumental Variables Approach Towards Investigating The Relationship Between Small Arms Abundance, Civil Conflict Onset, And Civil Conflict Intensity, Gabriel S. Barrett 2017 Macalester College

Do Weapons Make Warfare? An Instrumental Variables Approach Towards Investigating The Relationship Between Small Arms Abundance, Civil Conflict Onset, And Civil Conflict Intensity, Gabriel S. Barrett

Political Science Honors Projects

Scholars, journalists, and policymakers frequently attribute the intensity and onset of civil conflict to the abundance of small arms. However, the direction of causality has been difficult to assess due to a lack of data on the illicit small arms market and the plausibly endogenous relationship between the abundance of weapons and civil conflict. Using a new dataset of estimated small arms prices, I determine that a decrease in the price of small arms is significantly and negatively correlated with an increase in the intensity of conflict in the following year. I also determine that small arms prices increase in …

Do Latinos Still Support Immigrant Rights Activism? Examining Latino Attitudes A Decade After The 2006 Protest Wave, Chris Zepeda-Millán, Sophia Jordán Wallace 2017 University of California, Berkeley

Do Latinos Still Support Immigrant Rights Activism? Examining Latino Attitudes A Decade After The 2006 Protest Wave, Chris Zepeda-Millán, Sophia Jordán Wallace

Latino Public Policy

The historic and primarily Latino 2006 immigrant rights protest wave occurred in response to proposed federal anti-immigrant legislation (H.R. 4437). We examine several factors that influence support such as linked fate, knowing undocumented people, perceptions of anti-immigrant sentiments, concerns about immigration enforcement policies, political party identification, and …

On January 13, 2017, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump took to the social media platform Twitter to attack his recent opponent, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Trump microblogged, “What are Hillary Clinton’s people complaining about with respect to the F.B.I. Based on the information they had she would have never been allowed to run – guilty as hell… [sic]” Aside from the obvious concerns about a president who will be appointing judicial candidates assigning guilt to a political opponent, this tweet generally illustrates the overall negative tone perceived throughout the 2016 Presidential Election campaigns and more specifically illustrates the way …
