Recruitment Machines, Community Power And Political Return On Investment (Proi): Economic Development Policy In The Age Of Amazon, Eric G. Griego Montoya 2021 University of New Mexico - Main Campus

Recruitment Machines, Community Power And Political Return On Investment (Proi): Economic Development Policy In The Age Of Amazon, Eric G. Griego Montoya

Political Science ETDs

ABSTRACT

A fundamental policy choice in economic development among local policy makers is the appropriate mix of “outside” strategies that use incentives to attract companies, and “inside” strategies that invest in smaller and local businesses. Using a mixed-methods research design, including national and state surveys along with qualitative analysis of interviews conducted with policy elites, I examine the role of ideology, elites, community, competition, social capital (trust and influence), and electoral politics in these policy decisions. I use new descriptive theoretical frameworks called “recruitment machines” and “Political Return on Investment (PROI)” to describe how and why local elected officials support …

Gender Performance And Political Identity At The Jan. 6 Capitol Riot, Emma E. Newton 2021 University of Northern Iowa

Gender Performance And Political Identity At The Jan. 6 Capitol Riot, Emma E. Newton

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) at UNI

The January 6th riot on the U.S. Capitol Building was heavily documented with recorded videos and photos, not just by mainstream news sources but by the rioters themselves. Rioters’ videos uploaded to social media, particularly the conservative-focused website Parler, provide a lens into performances of gender as they intersect with political identity, revealing new ways that communication studies scholars can understand how conservative arguments are constructed within gender performance. In this thesis, I rhetorically analyze rioters’ videos uploaded to Parler using a lens of hegemonic masculinity and emphasized femininity, and further outline a conservative masculine and feminine performance of the …

Social Media's Influence On Political Engagement, Amanda Jewel Weston Fortson 2021 Arkansas State University

Social Media's Influence On Political Engagement, Amanda Jewel Weston Fortson

Student Theses and Dissertations

One of the growing influences in in political sphere in the last 20 years is social media. The ways individuals can share ideas about political movements has become easier with the common usage of the hashtag (#). Between the growth of influence and ease of usage there is a need to understand the relationship between social media usage and political engagement. I utilized the Cooperative Congressional Election Study (CCES) dataset for this research. The dataset allows for the exploration of how individuals engage with politics online by asking how individuals use social media such as posting a story, a comment, …

Examining Voter Rights, ONU Institute for Civics and Public Policy, Kennedy Aikey, Hailey Trimpey, Kennedy Cook 2021 Ohio Northern University

Examining Voter Rights, Onu Institute For Civics And Public Policy, Kennedy Aikey, Hailey Trimpey, Kennedy Cook

Critical Questions

In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was passed by Congress and secured the right to vote for every American, however, there is a difference between the right to vote and the accessibility in casting this vote. The right and accessibility to vote are key aspects to ensuring everyone is able to cast their vote, and by extension, voice their opinions as to what is best for our country. In the wake of the 2020 election, there has been an increase in state laws that target different elements of voting. To some, these laws are designed to increase “voter integrity.” To …

A Moral Framework For Commons-Based Geoengineering, Lisa L. Ferrari, Elizabeth L. Chalecki 2021 University of Puget Sound

A Moral Framework For Commons-Based Geoengineering, Lisa L. Ferrari, Elizabeth L. Chalecki

Political Science Faculty Publications

As climate conditions worsen and mitigation efforts continue to fall short, the likelihood increases that States or other international actors will look to geoengineering technologies for a remedy. The most basic of these methods, such as planting trees or sequestering carbon underground, can take place within sovereign territory. However, there are also many types of geoengineering that could be deployed in the global commons. This means that their impact would clearly be felt beyond one specific State or region, and, with certain approaches, such as stratospheric aerosol injection, likely worldwide. These commons-based geoengineering (CBG) technologies are largely untested and, in …

Proses Rekrutmen Dan Seleksi Kandidat Di Internal Pdi Perjuangan Pada Pilkada Cimahi Tahun 2017, Siti Witianti, Nasrullah Nazsir, Arry Bainus, Mudiyati Rahmatunnisa

Jurnal Wacana Politik

In Divided Times, A Focus On Human Experience Connects Us, Jason A. Wolf 2021 The Beryl Institute / Patient Experience Journal

In Divided Times, A Focus On Human Experience Connects Us, Jason A. Wolf

Patient Experience Journal

The realities of the time in which we find ourselves, not only in healthcare, but in society overall, have exposed so much of what was simmering beneath the surface of our humanity. Issues of equity and inclusion, of stress and burnout, of division and misconception and even the existence of alternative “truths” have caused rifts in our connection, weakened our societal foundations and pulled on the seams of the healthcare system itself. We close our eighth volume of Patient Experience Journal (PXJ) under this veil, yet I believe we have an opportunity to use this moment as a place from …

Income Inequality And Polarization In The United States, Tatum Colette Taylor 2021 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Income Inequality And Polarization In The United States, Tatum Colette Taylor

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Economic inequality has been on the rise in the United States for decades, as has political polarization. Pulling from grievance theory and relative deprivation theory, I explore the relationship between these two trends, predicting economic inequality may actually contribute to citizen polarization. I also predict that polarization of identities, issue opinions, and feelings towards groups polarize differently. In this study I test using linear regression analysis and data primarily from the American National Election Study whether income inequality and perceived growth of the income gap over 20 years affect ideological, substantive, and affective polarization from 2004-2016. I also examine the …

A Sign Of The Times- How Ethnonationalist Executives Affect Democracy, Adam M. Sikes 2021 Georgia Southern University

A Sign Of The Times- How Ethnonationalist Executives Affect Democracy, Adam M. Sikes

Honors College Theses

In the immediate post-Cold War era, proponents of democracy envisioned a world with few barriers to the spread of democracy and its institutions globally. However, a clear trend has been definitively established in the recent academic discourse pointing to a marked decline in the quality of democracies in several democratizing states. While the root causes for this decline continue to be a contentious subject, much of the existing literature depends on institutional theory to explain the cause of democratic backsliding. Concurrently, we have seen a dramatic stream of news about the state of democracy in two of the world’s most …

Redistricting Threats To New York’S Hispanic Congressional Representation, Carlos Vargas-Ramos 2021 Center for Puerto Rican Studies

Redistricting Threats To New York’S Hispanic Congressional Representation, Carlos Vargas-Ramos

CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies

The New York Independent Redistricting Commission has released draft maps of congressional, State Senate, and State Assembly districts drawn after the apportionment process, following the 2020 decennial census. While not final, some of the proposed maps threaten Hispanic congressional representation by eliminating one congressional district currently represented by a Hispanic member of the House of Representatives, diluting Hispanic population in several Hispanic majority districts, and reducing the likelihood of Hispanic representation in neighborhoods that have recently achieved Hispanic representation. Paradoxically, the attempts to dilute Hispanic political representation come on the heels of large Hispanic population increases across the state that …
