Sustainable Planning, Protecting Social, Economic, And Environmental Interests Of Coastal Communities, Daniel O'Hara

Undergraduate Research Competition

Understanding the connection between humans and wetland environments is imperative to coastal planning. This project looks to gather policy and scientific information from local, regional, federal, and international levels regarding wetland protection and preservation to improve policies and practices in coastal areas and create more sustainable and healthier environments. Sustainable planning in coastal communities includes connecting humans and nature through low-impact developments, using native plant species, non-impervious surfaces, and adequate buffers between developments and water sources. Successful coastal planning and development can help ensure that economic, social, and conservation interests are protected. Wetlands represent 5.5% of the total land area …

Georgetown County: The Issue Of Land Litter And Pollution, Nicole Rainwater 2022 Coastal Carolina University

Georgetown County: The Issue Of Land Litter And Pollution, Nicole Rainwater

Undergraduate Research Competition

Land litter and pollution are a large issue in current society. Georgetown County in South Carolina is no exception to this with excess amounts of litter lining the streets due to a lack of municipal solid waste management, and possibly a lack of education in sustainability. Litter not only harms the environment but also affects the community and its people while driving businesses and tourists away from the location. This paper aims to explore the litter issue of Georgetown County and its lack of sustainability through a litter index. To achieve this study a heat map of the land pollution …

Merging The Personal And The Academic For Greater Learning: A Successful Assignment, Gloria C. Cox

Feminist Pedagogy

Merging the Personal and Academic for Greater Learning: A Successful Assignment As a person who grew up during the Second Women’s Rights movement and who became a member of the academic community, I developed and taught on several occasions a class called Women and Politics. The course began with a brief overview of feminist theory and went from there to a history of women’s rights in the United States, which provided a foundation for our study of the legal and policy aspects of important topics like employment discrimination, sexual harassment, and marriage and family issues. Almost immediately I realized that …

Georgetown County Workforce Assessment And Survey, Dylan Campbell

Undergraduate Research Competition

Georgetown County is a county located on the east coast of South Carolina and just like other counties in South Carolina is experiencing workforce issues. These issues are due to a variety of situations including the most obvious occurring situation, the Covid-19 Pandemic. While working in the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce I have been able to work on creating a workforce survey that would be distributed to many businesses within Georgetown County. By creating and distributing this survey will allow the chamber and myself to receive as much insight as possible into some of the workforce struggles in Georgetown …

Media Suppression In Africa And The Balkans - How Economic Distribution Impacts Freedom Of The Press On An International Level, Lindsey G. Ingraham 2022 University of Northern Iowa

Media Suppression In Africa And The Balkans - How Economic Distribution Impacts Freedom Of The Press On An International Level, Lindsey G. Ingraham

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Freedom of intellectual expression and media are human rights that the United Nations argues should be available to all people on Earth. However, we continue to see suppression of the media by various states across the globe. There is plenty of research that examines abuse of human rights, but there is a significant gap in the literature regarding what role economic distribution within a state plays. One of the most common measures of economic dispersion within states is the Gini Coefficient. This places states on a scale from 0, perfect income equality, to 1, perfect income inequality where all of …

Assessing Thematic Correlations Between Extremist Political Organizations Of The Past And Present, Andrew C. Eunice 2022 Georgia Southern University

Assessing Thematic Correlations Between Extremist Political Organizations Of The Past And Present, Andrew C. Eunice

Honors College Theses

The Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, saw more than five hundred protestors teamed with dozens of militia groups, all representing anti-government and white nationalist groups. Also present were over one thousand counter protestors, many representing far-left and antifascist groups, leading to a violent confrontation between the two sides. As we have developed our core themes of what defines the United States of America, we have also fostered a strong division along the way, enough to the point where some individuals feel the necessity to act with violence to “save our nation” so to speak. This conviction exists within …

The Influence Of Misinformation From The American Perspective, Tyler W. Nelson 2022 Georgia Southern University

The Influence Of Misinformation From The American Perspective, Tyler W. Nelson

Honors College Theses

Over the last decade, conspiracy theorists and larger groups have become much more prominent across the United States, despite conspiracies being present for decades. Previously, they have been dismissed by most, however over the last decade due to an explosive political climate and growing numbers, these groups have begun to act on their beliefs. Events such as the January 6th Insurrection on the United States Capitol building is an unfortunate example as to how far these groups are willing to go. This study’s purpose is to use a nationwide survey to help determine who exactly are these types of individuals …

Presidential Agenda Rhetoric In The State Of The Union Address: Obama And Trump, Danielle Goedken 2022 University of Northern Iowa

Presidential Agenda Rhetoric In The State Of The Union Address: Obama And Trump, Danielle Goedken

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Previous research has illustrated that presidents will make many promises along the campaign trail and those promises are what build their agenda and hopefully get them elected. Once elected their agenda continues to be built through speeches. Researchers have compiled the campaign promises of previous administrations and tracked the completion of those promises. They have both tracked the completion of promises and good faith attempts at completing promises. In this paper, I analyze good faith attempts at keeping the promise on their agenda through presidential rhetoric in State of the Union Addresses. Presidents speak to Congress and the public on …

The Media, Onu Institute For Civics And Public Policy, Kennedy Aikey, Hailey Trimpey

Critical Questions

The media has a large influence on day-to-day life. The citizenry has become dependent upon media sources to inform them of current events and provide information about issues of importance to their daily lives. Media have evolved quite a bit over time and have become incredibly influential in our political system. For instance, American presidents now have the ability to communicate freely with the public and have direct ties to news media. We can continue to expect to see the growth of the media in both the political world and our daily lives.

When Growth Is Not Enough: Inequality, Economic Gains, And Executive Approval, Ryan E. Carlin, Timothy Hellwig, Gregory J. Love, Cecilia Martínez-Gallardo, Matthew M. Singer 2022 Georgia State University

When Growth Is Not Enough: Inequality, Economic Gains, And Executive Approval, Ryan E. Carlin, Timothy Hellwig, Gregory J. Love, Cecilia Martínez-Gallardo, Matthew M. Singer

Faculty and Student Publications

A robust economy is assumed to bolster leaders' standing. This ignores how benefits of growth are distributed. Extending the partisan models of economic voting, we theorize executives are more likely rewarded when gains from growth go to their constituents. Analyses of presidential approval in 18 Latin American countries support our pro-constituency model of accountability. When economic inequality is high, growth concentrates among the rich, and approval of right-of-center presidents is higher. Leftist presidents benefit from growth when gains are more equally distributed. Further analyses show growth and inequality inform perceptions of personal finances differently based on wealth, providing a micro-mechanism …

The Gray Zone Of Irregular Forces: Politically Sanctioned, Local Defense, And Organized Crime Groups In The Philippines, Jennifer Santiago Oreta 2022 Ateneo de Manila University

The Gray Zone Of Irregular Forces: Politically Sanctioned, Local Defense, And Organized Crime Groups In The Philippines, Jennifer Santiago Oreta

Political Science Department Faculty Publications

The persistent presence of armed groups in local communities is largely due to ineffective community security management, weak rule of law, and the constant shift in peace and security policy guidelines. Compounding the problem is the limited capacity of local government units and the lack of strong political will of officials to address security issues. Irregular forces offering private security services thrive in this environment. Armed groups gain legitimacy since they fill security service gaps in communities and because they assist government security forces in their counterinsurgency operations. Gray zone activities are activities by armed groups that happen in-between the …

Examining Stock Trading Reforms For Congress Hearing Before The U.S. House Of Representatives Committee On House Administration, Donna M. Nagy 2022 Indiana University Maurer School of Law

Examining Stock Trading Reforms For Congress Hearing Before The U.S. House Of Representatives Committee On House Administration, Donna M. Nagy

Public Testimony by Maurer Faculty

Professor Nagy testified (text attached, video below) in support of federal legislation that would prohibit members of Congress from owning the securities of individual publicly traded companies as well as certain other investments that would likely conflict with their official duties.

It was nearly 10 years ago to the day when President Barack Obama signed the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act, requiring enhanced financial disclosures and creating new securities transaction reporting rules for members of Congress, certain members of their family, and their staff. The Act also made absolutely clear that a member of Congress who trades securities …

On March 10, President Joe Biden announced that the United States would designate Colombia as a Major Non-NATO Ally. This designation extends special military and economic privileges to Colombia, including participation in joint defense research and training, and the ability to purchase weapons, ammunition, vehicles, and other surplus war material from the United States. This came on the heels of a U.S. delegation traveling to Venezuela for the first time since the United States broke off diplomatic relations and closed its embassy there in 2019. Motivating the U.S. overture is the potential to resume purchasing Venezuelan oil to compensate for …

In particular the paper will analyze the Women’s Protection Unit which is composed of female Kurdish fighters, who fought against ISIS and the Syrian government. Previously, Kurdish women have a documented history of oppression due to their gender. In their society, culture, and government, females have been suppressed from equality. The study will analyze if women can …
