Fascism: A Reading List With Notes, Michael F. Russo

Today, Fascism is on the rise around the world including, dismayingly, in the United States of America, threatening the rule of law, which is the basis of democracy. In the U. S. Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican nominee for president, has declared himself the standard bearer for authoritarian rule. If he wins, it is likely the United States will cease to be a democracy. If democracy is to survive, it is essential that citizens understand fascism, how it comes into existence, and what it does once it has taken root is essential. That is the reason for this reading list.

Proposed regulations for alcohol advertising prevent beverage companies from targeting people under the legal drinking age. However, similar regulations for alcohol alternative beverages are less explored, which could allow alcohol alternative products to create awareness for alcoholic beverages among youth. สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ศึกษาบทบาทที่มิใช่การรบของกองทัพเรือไทย โดยเฉพาะในด้านการช่วยเหลือด้านมนุษยธรรมและการบรรเทาสาธารณภัย ซึ่งมีความสำคัญเพิ่มมากขึ้นในบริบทของภัยคุกคามรูปแบบใหม่ เช่น ภัยธรรมชาติ ความมั่นคงด้านสิ่งแวดล้อม และความมั่นคงมนุษย์ การศึกษานี้มุ่งวิเคราะห์ยุทธศาสตร์ กลไกการจัดการ และบทบาทของกองทัพเรือผ่านกรอบแนวคิดทฤษฎีสถาบันเสรีนิยมใหม่ (Neoliberal Institutionalism) ที่เน้นความร่วมมือระหว่างรัฐและบทบาทของสถาบันระหว่างประเทศในการสร้างระเบียบและข้อตกลงร่วม งานวิจัยใช้ระเบียบวิธีเชิงคุณภาพผ่านการศึกษาข้อมูลจากเอกสารและแหล่งข้อมูลต่างประเทศและในประเทศ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า กองทัพเรือไทยได้พัฒนากลไกการจัดการ เช่น ศูนย์บรรเทาสาธารณภัยกองทัพเรือ และเข้าร่วมการฝึกร่วมระดับภูมิภาคและระดับโลก เช่น การฝึก Cobra Gold, Blue Strike และ Pacific Partnership ตลอดจนมีการส่งกำลังช่วยเหลือในเหตุการณ์สำคัญทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศ เช่น สึนามิปี พ.ศ.2547 และภารกิจในประเทศอินโดนีเซีย การศึกษาชี้ให้เห็นว่ากองทัพเรือไทยไม่เพียงแต่ตอบสนองต่อภารกิจความมั่นคงในรูปแบบดั้งเดิมเท่านั้น แต่ยังมีบทบาทสำคัญในความมั่นคงยุคใหม่ ที่เน้นความร่วมมือระดับภูมิภาคและสากล เพื่อรองรับภัยคุกคามที่ซับซ้อนและขยายตัวมากขึ้น

หัวข้อวิจัยนี้มีเป้าหมายเพื่อศึกษาผลกระทบของนโยบายฟรีวีซ่าต่อความมั่นคงของประเทศไทย โดยมุ่งเน้นที่ความเสี่ยงเชิงความมั่นคงที่เกิดขึ้นควบคู่กับความพยายามในการฟื้นฟูเศรษฐกิจผ่านการท่องเที่ยว ในปี พ.ศ.2557 จนถึงปัจจุบันที่ประเทศไทยดำเนินนโยบายฟรีวีซ่ากับหลายประเทศเพื่อดึงดูดนักท่องเที่ยว การศึกษานี้เริ่มต้นจากการสำรวจพัฒนาการของนโยบายส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวตั้งแต่แคมเปญ Amazing Thailand จนถึงนโยบายฟรีวีซ่าล่าสุด โดยมุ่งวิเคราะห์ความท้าทายในการสร้างสมดุลระหว่างการเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจกับการรักษาความมั่นคงของรัฐพร้อมทั้งเปรียบเทียบกับกรณีศึกษาจากต่างประเทศ เช่น สหรัฐอเมริกา ที่เคยประสบปัญหาความมั่นคงจากการเปิดพรมแดนแบบไร้เงื่อนไขจากการศึกษา พบว่าแม้การใช้ฟรีวีซ่าจะช่วยเพิ่มจำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวและสร้างรายได้ในระยะสั้น แต่หากไม่มีโครงสร้างรองรับที่เพียงพอ เช่น ระบบประเมินความเสี่ยงล่วงหน้า ฐานข้อมูลร่วม หรือกลไกติดตามหลังการเข้าเมือง ก็อาจกลายเป็นช่องว่างที่เปิดโอกาสให้เกิดอาชญากรรมข้ามชาติการประกอบธุรกิจผิดกฎหมาย การใช้วีซ่าผิดประเภท หรือการตั้งถิ่นฐานแบบผิดกฎ ซึ่งล้วนเป็นความท้าทายใหม่ในมิติความมั่นคง ผลการวิจัยชี้ว่า ปัญหาหลักไม่ได้อยู่ที่ตัวนโยบายฟรีวีซ่า แต่เกิดจากความไม่สอดคล้องกันของหน่วยงานภาครัฐและข้อจำกัดด้านศักยภาพของกลไกสนับสนุนภายในประเทศ ดังนั้น แนวทางที่เหมาะสมคือการพัฒนาเครื่องมือเชิงนโยบาย เช่น ระบบข้อมูลร่วม ระบบติดตามที่มีประสิทธิภาพ และการวัดคุณภาพนักท่องเที่ยวควบคู่ไปกับการสร้างความร่วมมือกับประเทศต้นทาง เพื่อลดความเสี่ยงและเสริมความยั่งยืนให้นโยบายฟรีวีซ่าในบริบทของประเทศไทย

Everyday political discourse centers around the direction of voting far more than the choice to vote itself, despite low turnout rates in the United States overall, and especially in local and non-presidential elections. No existing model provides a complete explanation of the reasons and influences that cause individuals to participate in politics by casting a ballot, and the literature is especially fractured with regards to issue-specific activation of voters. This work expands on previous issue-focused studies by performing turnout analyses for Virginia counties alongside geographic analysis of infrastructure quality and access. Do we need local government? Cities maintain representative institutions of government, hold elections, and host public hearings, but does that mean they can tackle city-specific problems? This project seeks to understand how deregulatory zoning policies, a supply-side tool to increase housing supply of affordable homes, spread across the 300 largest U.S. cities, or not. Cities might implement a zoning reform because they learn from another city, desire to increase housing supply for economic conditions, imitate another city, are forced too by a higher level of government, or are ideologically motivated to do so. Social policies’ responsiveness to rising inflation depends in large part on whether they contain automatic indexation mechanisms, which ensure that the real value of wages and benefits expands during inflationary periods. Here we compare how the indexation of Canadian and U.S. policies on pensions, minimum wages, and food security have affected their responsiveness to the recent cost-of-living crisis. Three main conclusions emerge from our analysis. First, automatic indexation is not necessarily a silver bullet to avoid policy drift. Second, automatic indexation and its design are not the only factors that matter to determine whether high inflation leads to policy drift. …

This short essay provides an introduction to the Lewis & Clark Law Review's "Law vs. Antisemitism" symposium, which grew out of the conference by the same name hosted at Lewis & Clark in the spring of 2023. In addition to overviewing the contributions to the symposium, the introduction provides some background on the relative paucity of legal scholarship that has addressed antisemitism, and the importance of including antisemitism in the otherwise robust legal academic conversation occurring around other forms of oppression and social discrimination.

But there have been clear signs of a resurgence of public antisemitism in the United States even before the massive rise in antisemitic expression and incidents associated with the Israel-Hamas war of fall 2023.

This project examines the ongoing destruction and theft of Ukrainian cultural heritage by Russian forces since February 2022 in tandem with international cultural property law, and theory, and case studies. By studying relevant cultural property laws and gathering information from associated theories of cultural property nationalism and internationalism, this project examines how these laws and theories apply to modern Ukraine. เหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงที่เกิดขึ้นในประเทศไทยสร้างความสูญเสีย ส่งผลกระทบต่อสังคมอย่างมาก งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสร้างฐานข้อมูลของการเกิดเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงในประเทศไทย วิเคราะห์ปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง และเสนอแนะข้อคิดเห็นจากมุมมองทางจิตเวชศาสตร์ ผู้วิจัยทำการศึกษาเชิงพรรณนาแบบย้อนหลังโดยรวบรวมเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงในประเทศไทยระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2537 - 2566 โดยใช้คำจำกัดความทางวิชาการสากล แล้วเก็บข้อมูลลักษณะทางประชากรและทางคลินิก รวมถึงปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเหตุการณ์ ผู้ก่อเหตุและเหยื่อ ผลการวิจัยพบมีเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงเกิดขึ้นรวม 78 ครั้งใน 30 ปีที่ผ่านมา โดยเป็นเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่ 65 ครั้ง และเหตุการณ์กราดยิง 49 ครั้ง ผู้ก่อเหตุสังหารหมู่ส่วนใหญ่เป็นเพศชาย (89.23%) ใช้อาวุธปืนก่อเหตุ (66.16%) มีประวัติการใช้สารเสพติด (27.69%) มีประวัติการฝึกใช้ปืน (20%) มีประวัติโรคทางจิตเวชที่มีความเสี่ยงสูงต่อการก่อความรุนแรง (7.7%) มีผู้เสียชีวิต 348 รายจากเหตุการณ์รวมทั้งหมด โดยสรุปคือเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงในประเทศไทยเกิดขึ้นเป็นประจำและมีแนวโน้มเพิ่มมากขึ้น ปัจจัยสำคัญของเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่ในประเทศไทยคือการเข้าถึงและฝึกใช้อาวุธปืน ปัญหายาเสพติด ส่วนประวัติโรคทางจิตเวชพบไม่มาก การสร้างฐานข้อมูลและศึกษาเหตุการณ์เหล่านี้ทางวิชาการต่อไป อาจนำไปสู่แนวทางป้องกันที่ดียิ่งขึ้นในอนาคต

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

The COVID-19 Pandemic caused a significant change in the way people voted 2020. Many Americans chose to absentee vote out of safety concerns. However, this process was not the same experience for all voters because some states require an excuse to absentee vote while others do not. This study analyzes whether there is a difference in voter turnout between states with no-excuse absentee voting and those without it. While reviewing voter turnout data for the 2016 and 2020 General Elections, this research finds evidence that turnout was higher in states with no-excuse absentee systems than those that require an excuse. …

Combining the lens of the political economic theories of Racial Capitalism and the Precariat, and applying them to a historical analysis of the US immigration system and its modern implications in US States, we are better able to understand to manner in which the immigration regime works to provide a cheap, exploitable labor force for US industry elites.
