The Blind Leading The Blind: Who Gets Polling Information And Does It Improve Decisions?, Cheryl Boudreau, Mathew D. Mccubbins

We analyze whether and when polls help citizens to improve their decisions. Specifically, we use experiments to investigate 1) whether and when citizens are willing to obtain polls and 2) whether and when polls help citizens to make better choices than they would have made on their own. We find that citizens are more likely to obtain polls when the decisions they must make are difficult and when they are unsophisticated. Ironically, when the decisions are difficult, the pollees are also uninformed and, therefore, do not provide useful information. We also find that when polls indicate the welfare-improving choice, citizens …

Presidential Power In Historical Perspective: Reflections' On Calabresi And Yoo's The Unitary Executive, Christopher S. Yoo
All Faculty Scholarship
On February 6 and 7, 2009, more than three dozen of the nation’s most distinguished commentators on presidential power gathered in Philadelphia to explore themes raised by a book authored by Steven Calabresi and I co-authored reviewing the history of presidential practices with respect to the unitary executive. The conference honoring our book and the special journal issue bringing together the articles presented there provide a welcome opportunity both to look backwards on the history of our project and to look forwards at the questions yet to be answered.

The Effect Of Representational Gender On Policy Preferences In U.S. Municipalities, 2009 Florida Atlantic University
The Effect Of Representational Gender On Policy Preferences In U.S. Municipalities, Mirya R. Holman

The research presented here explores the effect of gender and gender consciousness on the policy preference of local elected officials. Remedying a gap in the scholarship on women in local office, I examine the attitudes of mayors and council members on a variety of urban policy issues. First positing a gender gap theory of representative attitudes, I find almost no differences in policy preferences between men and women serving in local office. As an alternative, I posit and test a gender consciousness theory of policy preferences. Using open-ended survey data, I find that possessing a gender consciousness has a significant …
State, Youth And Electoral Violence In Nigeria’S Fourth Republic: The Imperative Of A Nationally Cordinated Youth Empowerment Program, 2009 Department of Political Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
State, Youth And Electoral Violence In Nigeria’S Fourth Republic: The Imperative Of A Nationally Cordinated Youth Empowerment Program, David O. Moveh Mr
David O Moveh PhD.
One manifestation of Nigeria’s crisis of governance since the advent of civil rule in 1999 is the spate of youth violence that has characterized the electoral process. From the plains up north to the creeks in the south, Nigeria’s electoral process within the past decade has been mired in violence so much as to make mockery of the democratization process. A lot of works (Bangura: 1997, Momoh: 2000, Yau: 2000) have studied how Nigeria’s economic crisis and the attendant structural adjustment programme of the 1980s resulted in the alienation and marginalization of the youth, thereby exacerbating the whole phenomenon of …
A Comparative Study Of Globalization And Democratic Consolidation In Ghana And Nigeria (1990-2008), 2009 Department of Political Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
A Comparative Study Of Globalization And Democratic Consolidation In Ghana And Nigeria (1990-2008), David O. Moveh Mr
David O Moveh PhD.
The implications of globalization for the developing world continue to attract the attention of scholars across the globe; yet, scant attention is paid to the dynamics of its political consequences. This paper is a comparative study of the external linkages and regime trajectories of Ghana and Nigeria; within the period 1990-2008. Evidence gathered on both countries substantiates the propositions that: the more a peripheral state derives huge revenues from commodity export, the more it will be able to exercise a significant degree of independence by resisting external pressure to imbibe liberal democratic values and vice versa. Similarly, the higher a …
Sex And The City: Female Leaders And Spending On Social Welfare Programs In U.S. Municipalities, 2009 Florida Atlantic University
Sex And The City: Female Leaders And Spending On Social Welfare Programs In U.S. Municipalities, Mirya R. Holman
Mirya R Holman
Scholars of urban politics have long argued that cities will shy away from extensive funding of social welfare programs, as fiscal realities make developmental policies far more attractive. Despite the arguments against municipal level funding of social welfare services, cities provide these programs. Why? One possible explanation is that local officials prefer funding welfare programs. The research presented here demonstrates that the gender composition of local elected bodies impacts the provision of welfare services. The presence of a female mayor has a large positive effect on the likelihood a city participates in funding welfare programs and the amount of monetary …

Systems Theory And Structural Functionalism, John Fisher
Dr. John R. Fisher
Although structural functionalism finds its roots much earlier than systems theory, as researchers use it today, it is based on systems theory. This book chapter sets forth an approach for using systems theory and structural functionalism as frameworks and models for research.
