Landscape Transformation At Tourist Resorts Around Lake Balaton, Adrienn Egyed, Zsuzsanna Mikházi
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
While a hundred years ago the villages disposed mainly the same functions (working and living functions) for the inhabitants, by now the villages transformed and can offer different functions for the inhabitants and tourists as well. Some of them offer work possibilities or have excellent location for being a living place. Some of them have values that are attractive enough for people for a while, they became a holiday resort. In this essay we examine the landscape transformation of this kind of villages.

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
The visibility assessment of the Perenye Windpark was commissioned in 2009 by the West Transdanubian Authority for Environmental Protection. The plans of the windpark contained 11 turbines situated in an arable area near the small village of Perenye, south of the scenic Kőszegi Mountain and the Írottkő Nature Park. The height of the planned turbines was 179 meters (160 meters tower plus 19 meters rotor height). Ten of them were planned to have 2 MW energy output and one, which was offered by the investors to the local government, 850 kW.
The main reason for the visibility assessment was the …

Frederick Law Olmsted’S Public Parks, Parkways And Their Influence On The Continent, Luca Csepely-Knorr
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
The connections between European and American park design have been the subject of a considerable body of research (e.g. Bowe, 1995). However, relatively little has been written on the extent to which European public parks have exerted an influence on the development of American urban green spaces, and the reciprocal effect of these open spaces on European park design.
The main goal of this paper is to examine how Frederick Law Olmsted’s European travels influenced his planning concepts, what he considered as his precedents, and how he put these in practical uses. Adopting a continental point of view, the focus …

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
Greenways, as their name suggests, are linear elements. The essence of a greenway is that it connects and separates. A greenway system means a continuous, unbroken connection of green spaces. In Hungary the greenway system could become complete if existing and proposed greenways could be connected at the following locations:
⎯ Along the Danube and Tisza flood prevention banks
⎯ Along main routes
⎯ On both sides of the rivers and smaller streams
⎯ On the edges of settlements
A greenway system would provide ecological harmony and a determining landscape structure for the Carpathian basin, as well as strengthen its …

The fringe city zones represent spaces which make the connection between city and nature, where urban areas cross into rural, or to the natural areas. The places where in the last decades, because of the rapid development, these zones shows the diverse of the land use and with lot of surfaces subjected to the constant changes (Friedberger, 2000) leading into destruction of the landscape. From the administrative point of view, the fringe zone starts outside the border of the Master plan (MP). The contemporary practice of urban planning confer the need to harmonize the interest of the city and the …

Is The French View Of Greenways Avant-Garde Or Déjà-Vu?, Laure Cormier, Monique Toublanc, Jacques Baudry
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
“Greenway” has become trendy in the French planners’ vocabulary. Indeed, this term has many meanings, related to both the environmental and social characteristics of a territory. It carries many positive cultural values. There are not one but several types of greenways in according to specific area (urban, peri-urban, and rural) with different objectives (recreation, nature conservation, human well being). Nowadays, the French term for greenways is “trame verte”. This expression is a planning concept dealing mostly with private land.
The objective of the paper is threefold. First, we shall look at the changes in the content of “greenways” in this …

A Sustainability Evaluation And Dynamic Modeling Tool For Landscape And Urban Planning Policy Scenarios, Chingwen Cheng, Timothy O. Randhir
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
Incorporating sustainability principles into urban development is often complex involving strong interaction between ecosystem components and development goals. As identified in the Brundtland Commissions report (UN, 1987), sustainability has gained much attention in planning aimed at balancing current needs without depleting resources and ecological services available for future generations. While the decision-making process is embedded in a social framework, political sustainability depends on collective decisions and citizens’ preferences related to public policies (Munda, 2006; Webster, 1998). In recent decade, the sustainability concept has been adopted in landscape and urban planning. Specific approaches include assessing abiotic, biotic, and cultural (ABC) resources …

A greenway is a linear open space established along either a natural corridor, such as a riverfront, stream valley, or ridgeline, or overland along a railroad right-of-way converted to recreational use, a canal, scenic rood, or other route. It is any natural or landscaped course for pedestrian or bicycle passage. An open-space connector linking parks, nature reserves, cultural features, or historic sites with each other and with populated areas (Little, 1995; Miller et al., 1998; Viles and Rosier, 2001).
A greenway is a connector; a pattern of protected lands linking other protected lands such as natural features or historic sites …

Spatial And Spatial-Temporal Analysis Of Grizzly Bear Movement Patterns As Related To Underlying Landscapes Across Multiple Scales, Barbara Lynn Carra
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Studying the movements of grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) in Alberta is imperative for scientifically informed management practices. To properly balance industry requirements with conservation imperatives, it is necessary to understand the spatial and spatial-temporal movement patterns of grizzly bears as they relate to underlying landscape properties. As part of the Foothills Research Institute Grizzly Bear Research Program, this dissertation explored both fine and largescale movement patterns generated from global positioning system (GPS) radiotelemetry data.
Between 1999 and 2005, grizzly bears were captured and radio-collared across western Alberta. The temporal resolution of GPS data collection had a large impact …

Ecological niche modeling (ENM) algorithms, Maximum Entropy Species Distribution Modeling (Maxent) and Genetic Algorithm for Rule-set Prediction (GARP), were used to develop models in Iowa for three species of mosquito – two significant, extant West Nile virus (WNV) vectors (Culex pipiens L and Culex tarsalis Coquillett (Diptera: Culicidae)), and the nuisance mosquito, Aedes vexans Meigen (Diptera: Culicidae), a potential WNV bridge vector. Occurrence data for the three mosquito species from a state-wide arbovirus surveillance program were used in combination with climatic and landscape layers. Maxent successfully created more appropriate niche models with greater accuracy than GARP. The three Maxent species’ …
