Context: When musculature around the shoulder is tight, alterations in scapular positioning may result, thus compressing the blood vessels to the upper extremity and decreasing blood flow. Graston Technique (GT) mobilizes the soft tissues to break up adhesions in fascia and lengthens tight musculature. The effect of GT has on blood flow after treatment to the shoulder musculature is unknown. Background: This study explored relationships between Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) scores. Methodology: This is a retrospective correlational design utilizing a purposive sample (n = 102) of Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students from three consecutive cohorts. Correlations were examined between GRE Verbal (GREV), GRE Quantitative (GREQ), and GRE Total (GRET) scores with the NPTE pass rate utilizing a Spearman rho correlation coefficient. Discriminant analysis was used to calculate the cut-off score that would correlate with a passing score of 600 on the NPTE. Fatigue in lower extremity musculature is associated with decline in postural stability, motor performance and alters normal walking patterns in human subjects. Automated recognition of lower extremity muscle fatigue condition may be advantageous in early detection of fall and injury risks. Supervised machine learning methods such as Support Vector Machines (SVM) have been previously used for classifying healthy and pathological gait patterns and also for separating old and young gait patterns. Objective: To discuss the physiological bases for using exogenously applied electric field (EF) energy to enhance wound healing with conductive electrical stimulation (ES) devices.

Approach: To describe the types of electrical currents that have been reported to enhance chronic wound-healing rate and closure.

Results: Commercial ES devices that generate direct current (DC), and mono and biphasic pulsed current waveforms represent the principal ES technologies which are reported to enhance wound healing.

Innovation: Wafer-thin, disposable ES technologies (wound dressings) that utilize mini or micro-batteries to deliver low-level DC for wound healing and antibacterial wound-treatment purposes are commercially available. Microfluidic wound-healing chips …

Utilizing a realistic setting with built-in controls, allows students to practice skills, receive instructor feedback and complete self-assessments to refine performance prior to participation in terminal clinical education. Cancer-related fatigue is the most commonly reported side effect of cancer treatment and affects 70-100% of patients. According to the 2013 National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines on Cancer-Related Fatigue, institutions should assess the quality of fatigue management in their continuous quality improvement projects. In addition, the Guidelines also state that Medicare contracts should reimburse for fatigue management and disability insurance should include coverage for the continuing effects of fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common presenting problem.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to compare the efficacy of vestibular rehabilitation (maneuver) vs. conventional therapy (medications) in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with BPPV.

METHODS: This was a prospective, single-blinded physician, randomized pilot study comparing two groups of patients who presented to the ED with a diagnosis of BPPV at a Level 1 trauma center with an annual census of approximately 75,000. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional laboratory study.

OBJECTIVE: To compare single-limb heel-rise performance and foot-ankle kinematics between persons with stage 2 adult-acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD) and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: The inability to perform a single-limb heel rise is considered a positive functional diagnostic test for AAFD. However, which foot motions contribute to poor performance of this task are not known.

Despite the importance of symptomatology in the diagnosis of vestibular dysfunction, the qualitative nature of the symptoms related to semicircular canal (canal) versus otolith dysfunction is not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to compare symptoms, and their severity, in individuals with canal versus otolith peripheral vestibular dysfunction. A subjective tool, the Descriptive Symptom Index (DSI), was developed to enable categorization of symptoms as rotary, linear, imbalance or falls, and nondistinct. Purpose. The adult myopathy assessment tool (AMAT) is a performance-based battery comprised of functional and endurance subscales that can be completed in approximately 30 minutes without the use of specialized equipment. The purpose of this study was to determine the construct validity and internal consistency of the AMAT with a sample of adults with spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA).

Methods. AMAT validity was assessed in 56-male participants with genetically confirmed SBMA (mean age, 53 ± 10 years). The participants completed the AMAT and assessments for disease status, strength, and functional status. Results. Lower AMAT scores were associated with longer …

There is currently little evidence to determine which conservative treatment approach is best for the management of patients with cervical radiculopathy; however, there is evidence these patients benefit from a multi-treatment approach. The purpose of this case is to describe the physical therapy management of a patient with cervical radiculopathy. Physical therapy diagnosis was based on the patient’s physical signs and symptoms as well as meeting three of the four criteria of the clinical prediction rule which is used to identify patients with cervical radiculopathy. However, some patients experience more significant problems following surgery and require rehabilitation services. Research is limited regarding physical therapy (PT) effectiveness in the post-operative management of such complicated cases. This case report aims to evaluate the effectiveness of PT treatment of a 34-year-old male with significant impairments and functional limitations following partial medial meniscectomy.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze how selected senior instructors in physical therapist educational programs define and seek to impart information on professional behavior. Methods: A qualitative case study approach was used to gather data from eight instructors teaching in four physical therapist educational programs in a selected region. Each interview was analyzed as an individual case study, followed by a cross case analysis to identify common themes.
