PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS

Inappropriate sexual behavior is defined as a “verbal or physical act of an explicit, or perceived, sexual nature, which is unacceptable within the social context in which it is carried out.” In a survey of U.S. PTs, 86% of the respondents reported experiencing at least one type of IPSB. PT education programs are required to teach concepts of professional duty, communication skills, and cultural competency, however, management techniques of IPSB in the clinic are not uniformly taught in schools. Purpose: The purpose of this special interest report is to review the effectiveness of e-learning in comparison to traditional classroom learning by exploring different methods of implementation of e-learning into PT curriculum

Description: Education delivery via e-Learning is becoming a common teaching mode that appeals to students because it can be completed asynchronously at a self-directed pace and reviewed anytime, anywhere and as often as necessary for understanding. Translating knowledge from eLearning materials to skill performance is important to consider for PT students due to the requirements of psychomotor performance and demonstration of appropriate affective professional behaviors.

Purpose/Hypothesis: Isolated rural men are considered a health disparities group at high risk for cardiovascular disease. The increasing availability of technologies for self-monitoring for healthy eating, activity and weight loss (ie mHealth) may show promise for engaging rural men in lifestyle modification. This study investigated the feasibility of men from rural isolated areas to use a fitness monitor with text messaging support over a 3- week period. The study examined the men’s daily monitor use for tracking activity and eating, and assessed via written survey, their perspectives about mHealth.

Problem Statement: Stepping is a common strategy after a perturbation. Stroke survivors display a predilection for stepping with non-paretic leg. Insight into induced stepping between stroke survivors and age-matched control may guide our understanding for reactive postural control training post stroke. Purpose: To investigate the difference in perturbation-induced stepping between chronic stroke survivors and age-matched controls at three phases of the stepping response: preparation, execution, and landing and association with clinical outcome measures. Procedure: Twenty-one community-dwelling chronic stroke survivors (mean age 59y/o ±13yrs) and 17 age- and gender-matched controls (mean age 54.4y/o ±17yrs) completed this study. Hand preference develops in the first two postnatal years with nearly half of infants exhibiting a consistent early preference for acquiring objects. Others exhibit a more variable developmental trajectory but by the end of their second postnatal year, most exhibit a consistent hand preference for role-differentiated bimanual manipulation. According to some forms of embodiment theory, these differences in hand use patterns should influence the way children interact with their environments, which, in turn, should affect the structure and function of brain development. Introduction: The incidence of time-loss injury in male collegiate soccer players in the United States (US) is 6.4 per 1000 athletic exposures. With thousands of male athletes competing in soccer at the US collegiate level each year, there is the potential for numerous time-loss injuries that may ultimately impact team success. This study compared preseason measures of standing long jump (SLJ) and single-leg hop (SLH) distances between female collegiate athletes with or without history of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). The data from 45 female collegiate athletes (mean age: 20.6 +- 2.2 years) competing at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes (NAIA) level in three team sports (volleyball, soccer, and basketball) were collected as a subanalysis of measures for a prospective cohort study. Charcot–Marie–Tooth (CMT) disease is the most common inherited neuropathy and one of the most common inherited diseases in humans. The diagnosis of CMT is traditionally made by the neurologic specialist, yet the optimal management of CMT patients includes genetic counselors, physical and occupational therapists, physiatrists, orthotists, mental health providers, and community resources. Rapidly developing genetic discoveries and novel gene discovery techniques continue to add a growing number of genetic subtypes of CMT. The first large clinical natural history and therapeutic trials have added to our knowledge of each CMT subtype and revealed how CMT impacts patient quality of life. In …

BACKGROUND: During a re-accreditation visit, deficiencies were discovered in the clinical education curriculum regarding patient-centered care in a Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. To understand the problem and address those deficiencies, the clinical internship experience was examined using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) model as a conceptual framework for clinical reasoning.

The Patient Reported Outcome Instrument System (PROMIS) is a newly developed computer adapted test (CAT) that is being incorporated into electronic medical records and has been reported to assess a person’s physical function. •30-60% community dwelling older adults fall each year, which is the leading cause of injury, death, and traumatic hospital admissions in the elderly.1 This costs the U.S. health care system $20-30 billion per year.2 Currently used older adult self-report measures demonstrate poor responsiveness3, thus failing to detect a decline in function on early enough for preventative physical therapy intervention.

Why Nordic Hamstring?

• Hamstrings are the most commonly injured muscle in sprinting and

  kicking sports (soccer, football and rugby).

• Recurrent hamstring injuries lead to longer time loss than the original injury.

• Despite the presence of preventa- tive programs, research has not yet documented an effective, low-cost, widely accessible test to determine hamstring injury risk.
