Sustained Isometric Shoulder Contraction On Muscular Strength And Endurance: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Natalie L. Myers, Jenny L. Toonstra, Jacob S. Smith, Cooper A. Padgett, Tim L. Uhl

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The Advanced Throwers Ten Exercise Program incorporates sustained isometric contractions in conjunction with dynamic shoulder movements. It has been suggested that incorporating isometric holds may facilitate greater increases in muscular strength and endurance. However, no objective evidence currently exists to support this claim.

HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The purpose of this research was to compare the effects of a sustained muscle contraction resistive training program (Advanced Throwers Ten Program) to a more traditional exercise training protocol to determine if increases in shoulder muscular strength and endurance occur in an otherwise healthy population. It was hypothesized that utilizing a sustained isometric …

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Occlusion calibrations and gating techniques have been recently applied by our laboratory for continuous and absolute diffuse optical measurements of foreann muscle hemodynamics during handgrip exercises. The translation of these techniques from the foreann to the lower limb is the goal of this study as various diseases preferentially affect muscles in the lower extremity. This study adapted a hybrid near-infrared spectroscopy and diffuse correlation spectroscopy system with a gating algorithm to continuously quantify hemodynamic responses of medial gastrocnemius during plantar flexion exercises in 10 healthy subjects. The outcomes from optical measurement include oxy-, deoxy-, and total hemoglobin poncentrations, blood oxygen …

Effect Of Vestibular Adaptation Exercises On Chronic Motion Sensitivity, Danah Alyahya 2015 Loma Linda University

Effect Of Vestibular Adaptation Exercises On Chronic Motion Sensitivity, Danah Alyahya

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Dizziness is one of the most common complaints reported to primary care physicians. It is often associated with vestibular dysfunction and typically impacts postural stability. Motion sickness, or motion sensitivity, is stimulated by abnormal spatial orientation and is a common symptom related to dizziness and postural instability. The main cause of the motion sensitivity is aberrant sensory input from the visual, vestibular and somatosensory systems. The aim of this study was to measure the effect of vestibular adaptation exercises on postural stability in young healthy adults with subjective awareness of chronic motion sensitivity.

Methods: Fifty healthy male and female …

Young adults with a visual impairment (VI) experience less interaction with the community that impacts the way they relate to the world as they transition to the larger society where they face significant barriers of adjustment, exclusion, and work participation. Young adults with VI contend with cultural stigma, inequality, poor self-esteem caused by marginalization, a low quality of life (QOL), and lack of Social support systems that exist beyond the home. The aim of this study was to understand the perceptions of young adults with VI in Elgeyo-Marakwet and Kisumu Counties of Kenya concerning the barriers to community inclusion and …

Use Of Manual Therapy And Sport Specific Re-Training In An Adolescent Elite Sprinter With Bilateral Pedicle Stress Fractures: A Case Report, Erika Lopez 2015 University of New England

Use Of Manual Therapy And Sport Specific Re-Training In An Adolescent Elite Sprinter With Bilateral Pedicle Stress Fractures: A Case Report, Erika Lopez

Case Report Posters

Bilateral pedicle stress fractures are extremely rare, with few cases reported in the literature. The pedicle is known to be the second weakest point of the vertebra, has a short moment arm from the vertebral body, and can resist a large amount of cyclic shear forces. The main causes of lumbar pedicle stress fractures are shear stress and twisting stressors, followed by sudden hyperflexion or hyperextension of the spine. There have been several reports describing pedicle stress fracture in adolescent athletes. However, in those reports the fracture was usually associated with contralateral spondylolysis, and isolated pedicle fractures are rarely found. …

Conservative Physical Therapy Protocol After Subacromial Decompression And Labral Debridement In A Young Former Competitive Gymnast: A Case Report, Sara Nichols, Kirsten Buchanan

Case Report Posters

Subacromial impingement syndrome is a musculoskeletal condition characterized by shoulder pain and altered glenohumeral kinematics. Conservative treatment can include physical therapy and corticosteroid injections. Surgical option includes subacromial decompression (SAD). Most patients who undergo SAD are approximately 50-60 years old. There is little to no evidence regarding rehabilitation of young, healthy individuals following SAD. The purpose of this case report was to investigate the conservative protocol of a young, healthy gymnast who underwent SAD and rotator cuff [RC] surgery.

Changes In The Ideal Body Type, Jessica L. Hoffman 2015 Indiana State University

Changes In The Ideal Body Type, Jessica L. Hoffman

University Honors Program

The human body comes in all shapes and sizes. Each different body shape allows onlookers to evaluate at least some aspects of the subject’s lifestyle and priorities. All eras choose a body type that they exalt above the rest. The goal of this research is to evaluate the considered ideal body type from three different eras in order to better understand these time periods and their values. A compilation of books and journal articles were used from the Cunningham Memorial Library Database, the library itself, and other personal libraries to better understand this topic. The most pertinent question was what …

Body Weight Supported Treadmill Training And Overground Gait Training In The In-Patient Setting For An Individual With Chronic Stroke: A Case Report, Stephanie Bordignon

Case Report Posters

795,000 people in USA have a new or recurrent stroke each year, leaving them with spatiotemporal gait abnormalities. Following D/C from in-patient rehab, many patients continue to experience activity limitations & participation restrictions secondary to limited walking ability. The use of BWSTT & overground GT has been shown to improve bilateral coordination and gait symmetry for patients with chronic stroke. Evidence for BWSTT rather than overground GT is mixed and does not include representation for the young stroke population. The purpose of this case report was to describe the outcomes of gait speed, efficiency of gait, and fall risk in …

Use Of Complete Decongestive Therapy And A Task-Oriented Approach In Treating Secondary Lymphedema And Improving Ambulation In A Patient Following A Stroke: A Case Report, Snezhana Rudakova 2015 University of New England

Use Of Complete Decongestive Therapy And A Task-Oriented Approach In Treating Secondary Lymphedema And Improving Ambulation In A Patient Following A Stroke: A Case Report, Snezhana Rudakova

Case Report Posters

Every year, approximately 795,000 people in the United States experience a new or recurrent stroke. More than 30% of the survivors cannot walk independently six months following a stroke. Of those who are able to walk independently, only a small proportion can walk with sufficient speed and endurance to be able to function within the community. Paralysis of the extremities leads to a decreased and ineffective muscle pumping action, resulting in lymph stasis. Lymphedema is the tissue fluid accumulation that arises due to impaired lymphatic drainage. Fluid accumulation further increases difficulty with ambulation post stroke. The purpose of this case …

There is no gold standard for evaluation, treatment, and prevention of keloids. Keloids are elevated fibrous scars that extend beyond the original borders of the wound, they do not regress and they tend to reoccur even after surgical excision. Individuals younger than 30, with elevated hormone levels and darker skin tend to be at higher risks for keloids. The most susceptible areas are on areas of high tension like the sternum, shoulders, upper arms, earlobes, and cheeks. Scars are generally evaluated by depth of elevated tissue, color, softness, shape, and orientation. The etiology of keloids is uncertain but it is …

Using The Selective Functional Movement Assessment And Regional Interdependence Theory To Guide Treatment Of An Athlete With Back Pain: A Case Report, Gabriella Goshtigian 2015 University of New England

Using The Selective Functional Movement Assessment And Regional Interdependence Theory To Guide Treatment Of An Athlete With Back Pain: A Case Report, Gabriella Goshtigian

Case Report Posters

Incidence of low back pain (LBP) is as high as 36% among adolescents and even more prevalent in those who play sports. The majority of these cases lack an underlying diagnosis and are classified as non-specific LBP. Previous injury and longer durations of pain consistently emerge as prognostic factors in musculoskeletal pain. This affects movement patterns which then continue to contribute to dysfunction. The Regional Interdependence Theory (RI) views all regions of the body as being musculoskeletally linked, with impairments in remote regions to site of pain often being a cause. The Joint-by-Joint Theory compliments RI by arguing that joints …
