The purpose of this dissertation was to quantify the benefits of ischemic conditioning on reactive balance responses and gait adaptation during treadmill walking in chronic stroke survivors. Reactive balance and gait adaptations are believed to be limited in this population. Ischemic conditioning is an emerging adjunct to physical therapy that improves motor function post-stroke via improvements in strength, voluntary muscle activation, walking speed, and fatigability. Purpose: Care partners of people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) often experience disrupted routines, reduced self-care, and limited participation in meaningful occupations. Occupational therapy (OT) supports care partners’ engagement in health-promoting activities and sustainable caregiving (Rhodus et al., 2023). This systematized review examined interventions that enhance care partner performance and participation.

Design: Peer-reviewed, English-language articles were included if they involved adult care partners of individuals with AD or NCDs, implemented an intervention within the scope of OT, and used quantitate research designs.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) providing care for people living with disordered states of consciousness frequently navigate ambiguity and uncertainty. Using interview and video data we will show how SLPs clinically reason via tinkering or “thinking in action”. This undervalued and understudied clinical reasoning skill is a caring practice comprised of curiosity, experimentation, flexibility and adaptation to attend to a person’s needs. SLPs will have the opportunity to reflect and discuss their experiences with tinkering in a wide range of patient populations.

Lower limb prosthesis users (LLPUs) often feel less confident walking in their day-to-day lives. Even with rehabilitation, some individuals do not develop the skills and confidence needed to walk across different terrains. Walking practice on varied terrains may be a method for increasing skill and confidence. The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility of implementing an uneven terrain training program for LLPUs. Purpose of Review: Repetitive head impacts (RHI)—repeated head trauma that may or may not result in clinically identified injury—are a growing public health concern due to links with neurodegenerative disease and long-term dysfunction. This review aimed to synthesize current knowledge of RHI and evaluate methodological challenges that limit conclusions about its clinical consequences. Recent Findings: Emerging studies highlight associations between RHI and cognitive, emotional, and functional outcomes across vulnerable populations including athletes, military personnel, and survivors of intimate partner violence. This study explored the effectiveness of technology on the enhancement of independent living skills for individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD) in two MOKA smart homes. Using a quantitative research approach, the study examined how assistive technology can aid individuals with IDD to increase independence in their living skills. This research was conducted in two pilot residential homes, a men's home and a women's home. Three women and two men participated in the study. There is limited knowledge about life enrichment farms and their role in supporting individuals with disabilities. This project aimed to highlight how occupational therapy can collaborate with these farm-based programs to promote independence, health, and well-being among younger adults with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. Introduction: Concussions are a form of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that cause problems such as headaches, dizziness, dazed or confusion, difficulty remembering or concentrating, but one of the most common complications that can occur from concussions are sleep disturbances/disorders. About 90% of those affected by TBI reported some type of sleep disturbance that include insomnia, frequent wakefulness after onset sleep, poor sleep quality, increased need for sleep, and/or daytime sleepiness that may possibly interfere with daily living activities. Introduction: This study assessed the validity of a non-immersive body motion tracking system (TRAZER) as an alternative to using Inertial Measurement Units (IMU)-based motion capture (MyoMotion) for lower extremity kinematic analysis. Methods: Twenty healthy participants (10 females, 10 males) with a mean age of 24.03 years (range: 20-33 years) and a mean BMI of 25.15 kg/m² (range: 18.45-32.23 kg/m²) performed double and single-leg squats. Participants: Twenty-eight healthy professional women’s soccer players (Age: 27.8 ± 5.1 years; Body Mass: 66.2 ± 6.7 kg). Main Outcome Measures: Season GPS data was analyzed and metrics included minutes, total distance, high speed running, total accelerations, total decelerations, and maximum speed. Purpose of Review: This review synthesizes recent developments in vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) for stroke rehabilitation from 2021–2025, emphasizing the transition from experimental approaches to clinical implementation following FDA approval of implantable VNS. Recent Findings: The 2021 FDA approval of the Vivistim Paired VNS System marked a watershed moment in stroke neuromodulation, providing the first regulatory-approved VNS therapy for upper extremity motor recovery. Long-term follow-up studies demonstrate sustained benefits at one year, with 66% of patients achieving clinically meaningful improvements.
