Change In Bone Mineral Density Among High Frequency Apheresis Blood Donors, Walter Bialkowski

Exposure to citrate anticoagulant during apheresis blood donation induces significant decreases in serum ionized calcium with subsequent perturbations to parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, and markers of bone remodeling. Cross-sectional studies of bone mineral density (BMD) among apheresis donors exhibit conflicting results. Resolving the potential impact of the highest apheresis donation frequency represents a significant knowledge gap in ensuring adequate protections for volunteer apheresis blood donors. ALTRUYST (NCT02655055) was a randomized, longitudinal, controlled clinical trial designed to determine if repeated exposure to citrate through apheresis donation reduces BMD. Context: Compared with individuals who have a history of lateral ankle sprain (LAS) without markers of chronic ankle instability (CAI; LAS copers) and healthy people, those with CAI often exhibit neuromuscular impairments and dynamic-stability deficits at the hip. However, the influence of hip-strength deficits on dynamic stability remains unknown.

Objective: To compare isometric hip strength and dynamic stability in individuals with or without CAI and examine the degree of dynamic-stability variance explained by isometric hip strength.

Long-term motor dysfunction in the lower limb is common after stroke. One potential contributor is motor compensation, a behavior in which functions originally performed by the paretic limb are performed by the non-paretic limb. Compensation in chronic stroke may contribute to long-term motor dysfunction by limiting functional ability, impairing future recovery, and eliciting maladaptive neuroplasticity. The purpose of this dissertation was to describe the impact of compensation on motor function and brain activation during lower limb pedaling and identify elements that produce this behavior. Despite the laws that are in place to ensure equal employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, there continues to be a disparity in employment rates for persons with disabilities when compared to persons without disabilities. Understanding factors that influence employers disposition to hire and retain persons with disabilities is the first step towards developing a guide for professionals that provide direct job placement services to this population in developing an educational intervention plan that is conducive to employers being more receptive to hiring persons with disabilities.

Background

Obesity prevalence is increased in children with developmental disabilities, specifically in children with spina bifida and Down syndrome. Energy expenditure, a critical aspect of weight management, has been extensively studied in the typically developing population, but not adequately studied in children with developmental disabilities.

Objective

Determine energy expenditure, fat-free mass and body fat percentile and the impact of these findings on recommended caloric intake in children with spina bifida and Down syndrome.

Aim: Low back pain (LBP) is a disabling condition to individuals in the United States and physical therapy (PT) has been proven to be a beneficial treatment by analyzing their movement patterns. The main objective of this study was to analyze the deep squat component of the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) as an indicator of LBP while simultaneously using 2-D analysis. Method: This cross-sectional case study included 36 participants that completed a total of six deep squats. Three raters scored the FMS score of each participant.
