INTRODUCTION: Acquired Brain Injury, whether resulting from Traumatic brain injury (TBI) or Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA), represent major health concerns for the Department of Defense and the nation. TBI has been referred to as the "signature" injury of recent U.S. military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan - affecting approximately 380,000 service members from 2000 to 2017; whereas CVA has been estimated to effect 795,000 individuals each year in the United States. TBI and CVA often present with similar motor, cognitive, and emotional deficits; therefore the treatment interventions for both often overlap. The Defense Health Agency and Veterans Health Administration would …

From Their Perspective: A Qualitative Analysis Of Stroke Survivor’S Motivation To Participate In Rehabilitation, Katie Tinsley, Rachel Johnson 2020 Old Dominion University

From Their Perspective: A Qualitative Analysis Of Stroke Survivor’S Motivation To Participate In Rehabilitation, Katie Tinsley, Rachel Johnson

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Introduction: It is common practice for healthcare professionals to make judgments about a patient's motivation based on their demeanor and compliance with therapy. Motivation is one of the predictors used to determine a stroke survivor's rehabilitation potential. There are several theories and constructs for motivation; however, there is limited research applying these concepts in stroke rehabilitation. Rehabilitation clinicians primarily rely on their clinical judgment and consult the evidence from related fields to identify the motivational needs of a stroke survivor. The objective of this study was to understand specific barriers to participation and identify motivational needs to sustain engagement in …

The Effects Of Group Music Therapy On Levels Of Anxiety, Depression, Well-Being, Functional Disability, And Distress In Adult Congolese Refugees, Elise Hawkes 2020 Southern Methodist University

The Effects Of Group Music Therapy On Levels Of Anxiety, Depression, Well-Being, Functional Disability, And Distress In Adult Congolese Refugees, Elise Hawkes

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

Refugees have a variety of mental health needs due to their experiences, including trauma, anxiety, and depression. Psychotherapy, one of the main modalities for treatment, presents limitations including language barriers and negative stigmas. Music therapy might help to overcome these limitations due to its reliance upon music, rather than verbal language, as the therapeutic medium, and due to music’s ubiquitous cultural prevalence. Music therapy has been shown to have positive effects on sleep quality, well-being, trauma symptoms, social function, and mood. Music therapy training and research results have demonstrated ways to connect with clients through music and overcome cross-cultural barriers. …

The Role Of An Auditory Cue In Generating Anticipatory Postural Adjustments In Response To An External Perturbation, Huaqing Liang, Tippawan Kaewmanee, Alexander S. Aruin 2020 Marshall University

The Role Of An Auditory Cue In Generating Anticipatory Postural Adjustments In Response To An External Perturbation, Huaqing Liang, Tippawan Kaewmanee, Alexander S. Aruin

Physical Therapy Faculty Research

Anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) are usually generated to minimize the potential postural disturbance induced by predictable external perturbations. Visual information about a perturbation is important for the generation of APAs, but whether people can rely on auditory information to generate APAs is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of an auditory cue in generating APAs when visual information is not available. Fifteen young adults participated in the study. They received external perturbations a) with visual information but no auditory information available, b) without neither visual nor auditory information, c) with both visual and auditory information …

Loss Of Self In Dissociation In Prostitution; Recovery Of Self In Connection To Horses: A Survivor's Journey, Sandra Norak 2020 University of Rhode Island

Loss Of Self In Dissociation In Prostitution; Recovery Of Self In Connection To Horses: A Survivor's Journey, Sandra Norak

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

This narrative is about dissociation in the lives of women who have been exploited through prostitution. When we speak about prostitution, we do not speak often enough about the dissociation needed for women and girls to survive sexual exploitation. The author challenges the wisdom of governments such as Germany that legalize prostitution, treating it as a “job” and ignoring the violence and subsequent dissociation in women. The author describes her personal journey, explaining how women are traumatized even after the first commercial sex act, which is a sexual assault. They dissociate which makes their lives bearable, but they fail to …

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

Background

People with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) have reduced bone mineral density (BMD), but the causes are unclear. Some factors that may cause reduced BMD in PwMS have been understudied, including physical activity, inflammation, cortisol, symptomatic fatigue, and depression. The aim of this study was to investigate factors that may uniquely contribute to reduced BMD in PwMS as compared to people without MS. We hypothesized that physical activity would be the primary determinant of low BMD in PwMS, with additional contributions from inflammation and sympathetic nervous system activation.

Methods

We tested 23 PwMS (16 women; median EDSS: 2) and 22 control …
