Acceptability And Effectiveness Of A Novel Cycling Training On The Parkinsonian Motor And Psychiatric Symptoms In Individuals With Schizophrenia: A Pilot Study., Mehmet Uygur, Thomas J. Dinzeo 2021 Rowan University

Acceptability And Effectiveness Of A Novel Cycling Training On The Parkinsonian Motor And Psychiatric Symptoms In Individuals With Schizophrenia: A Pilot Study., Mehmet Uygur, Thomas J. Dinzeo

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that high-speed, low-resistance stationary cycling training (termed as speedwork) alleviates motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease. Similar motor symptoms commonly exist in people with schizophrenia (Sz); however, they were neglected in the previous literature.

OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to evaluate if speedwork could also be used as a strategy to improve parkinsonian motor symptoms in Sz. We aimed 1) to evaluate the adherence and acceptability of speedwork in Sz, 2) to assess test-retest reliability of the motor assessments that are novel to Sz research, 3) to evaluate the effectiveness of speedwork in improving parkinsonian motor, …

Facilitating Aging In Place And Community By Empowering Participation In Society: A Mixed Methods Study On The Co-Development Of A Theory Of Change With Suburban-Dwelling Older Adults, Emily Balog 2021 George Washington University

Facilitating Aging In Place And Community By Empowering Participation In Society: A Mixed Methods Study On The Co-Development Of A Theory Of Change With Suburban-Dwelling Older Adults, Emily Balog

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Background: Baby boomers are steadily aging in America and represent an increased population in nearly every sector. In suburban communities today, older adults make up 51% of the population. Ninety-five percent of all older adults live in community settings and have expressed a desire to avoid costly institutionalization and to remain in their homes and communities, also called aging in place. Older adults in moderate income suburban communities are increasingly at a higher risk for institutionalization should their health or finances decline as the access to their wealth is within the home in which they dwell. This process …

Anna G. Conroy, Phuong L. Ha, Benjamin E. Dalton, Michaela G. Alesi, Tyler M. Smith, Trisha A. VanDusseldorp, Yuri Feito, Garrett M. Hester. Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, GA 30144

Time-dependent measures such as rate of velocity (RVD; Δvelocity/Δtime) and torque (RTD; Δtorque/Δtime) development are important contributors to peak power during a dynamic muscle contraction. However, sex differences in the fatigability of these parameters remain relatively unexplored. Purpose: To determine sex differences for RVD and RTD of the plantar flexors (PFs) during a dynamic fatiguing task. …

The Effect Of First-Time 4-Wheeled Walker Use On The Gait Of Younger And Older Adults, Humberto A. Omana, Edward Madou, Alison Divine, Walter Wittich, Keith D. Hill, Andrew M. Johnson, Jeffrey D. Holmes, Susan W. Hunter 2021 Western University

Hunter

Physical Therapy Publications

INTRODUCTION: The 4-wheeled walker is intended to enhance balance and gait for older adults. Yet, some research suggests that walking aids increase falls risk. An understanding of the influence of age with walker use on gait performance is required.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of initial 4-wheeled walker use on spatiotemporal gait parameters between younger and older adults.

DESIGN: Cross-sectional, repeated-measures.

SETTING: Community-dwelling.

PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-five younger (age: 26.5 ± 4.1 years) and 24 older (age: 68.5 ± 10.5 years) adults participated. Younger adults were aged 18 to 35 years, whereas older adults were 50 years or older. Included were people …

Faculty and Student Publications

The aim of this multi-experiment paper was to explore the concept of the minimum effective training dose (METD) required to increase 1-repetition-maximum (1RM) strength in powerlifting (PL) athletes. The METD refers to the least amount of training required to elicit meaningful increases in 1RM strength. A series of five studies utilising mixed methods, were conducted using PL athletes & coaches of all levels in an attempt to better understand the METD for 1RM strength. The studies of this multi-experiment paper are: an interview study with elite PL athletes and highly experienced PL coaches (n = 28), an interview and survey …

Towards A Medical School Curriculum For Uncertainty In Clinical Practice, Dimitrios Papanagnou, Nethra S. Ankam, David Ebbott, Deborah Ziring 2021 Thomas Jefferson University

Towards A Medical School Curriculum For Uncertainty In Clinical Practice, Dimitrios Papanagnou, Nethra S. Ankam, David Ebbott, Deborah Ziring

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

Uncertainty abounds in the clinical environment. Medical students, however, are not explicitly prepared for situations of uncertainty in clinical practice, which can cause anxiety and impact well-being. To address this gap, we sought to capture how students felt in various clinical scenarios and identify programs they found helpful as they worked through uncertainty in their clerkships to better inform curriculum that prepares them to acknowledge and navigate this uncertainty. This is an observational cross-sectional study of third-year medical students surveyed at the end of core clerkships. The survey consisted of the General Self-Efficacy (GSE) Scale and Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale …

Effects Of Rucksack Military Accessory On Gait Dynamic Stability, Seong H. Moon, Christopher W. Frames, Rahul Soangra, Thurmon Lockhart 2021 Arizona State University at the Tempe Campus

Effects Of Rucksack Military Accessory On Gait Dynamic Stability, Seong H. Moon, Christopher W. Frames, Rahul Soangra, Thurmon Lockhart

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Various factors are responsible for injuries that occur in the U.S. Army soldiers. In particular, rucksack load carriage equipment influences the stability of the lower extremities and possibly affects gait balance. The objective of this investigation was to assess the gait and local dynamic stability of the lower extremity of five subjects as they performed a simulated rucksack march on a treadmill. The Motek Gait Real-time Interactive Laboratory (GRAIL) was utilized to replicate the environment of the rucksack march. The first walking trial was without a rucksack and the second set was executed with the All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment …

Cephalocaudal-Remote Approach, David Ledesma

Student Capstone Papers

This opinion paper introduces a global, top-down, bottom-up, and lateral perspective on occupation, known as the Ledesma Cephalocaudal-Remote Approach, which can be used to build an integrated, holistic occupational therapy practice. This approach combines the Ayres (1960, 1966, 1972, 1979) cephalocaudal and vestibular sensory-motor development (confirmed by Lane et al., 2019); the Wilke et al. (2017) remote interoceptive, proprioceptive, and nociceptive stretching, based on Myers (2017) myofascial chain approach; the Serino (2019) peripersonal and multisensory-motor approach; the Leisman et al. (2016) bidirectional dynamic influence of motor activity and cognition approaches, and the Sadil (2019) evidence for rapidly learned low-level associations …
