The Effect Of The 6-Minute Walk Test On Vertical Leap, Sophia Smith, Alexi Card, Kristen Flateau 2022 Gardner-Webb University

The Effect Of The 6-Minute Walk Test On Vertical Leap, Sophia Smith, Alexi Card, Kristen Flateau

EXSI 432/532: Research Methods in Exercise Science: Research Proposal Posters

The vertical jump test is a test often used to assess lower body power (Haff and Triplett, 2016). The six-minute walk test (6MWT) has been useful in assessing for a variety of respiratory or cardiac diseases (Olsson, 2005). The 6MWT requires participants to walk as far as they can in the six minutes, which is physically taxing on the body (Olsson, 2005). Studies have found that a gradual, progressive warmup can improve performance whereas static stretching can negatively impact performance (Vetter, 2007). The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a 6MWT, and a 6-minute treadmill walk …

How Occupational Therapy Can Assist With Successful Aging In .Place For Baby Boomers, Paige W. Vissman

MOT Student Capstones

Aging in place is an emerging concept within the occupational therapy (OT) profession and is described as "the ability to live in one's own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level" (CDC, n.d.). It can be successfully achieved with early planning, appropriate home modifications, community and family support, and available resources. Aging in place is desired in the senior population, specifically the Baby Boomer generation, and can positively affect one's life satisfaction and quality of life. As an emerging area of practice within OT, professionals can play a role in the success of …

Preventing Occupational Imbalance With Seniors Living In The Community During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Carrieanne Allegri

MOT Student Capstones

When COVID-19 shut down the world in March of 2020, nobody knew what to expect. What we discovered was seniors no longer had the opportunities to engage in social events, attend classes, or participate in the community. Understanding that engagement in leisure and social activities are important in preventing depression and isolation amongst seniors, finding alternative activities via virtual delivery and socially distanced were identified as a need. 3 An in-service was provided to senior citizens at a community center to address areas identified as a need by community center staff and members. The main objective of the in-service included …

Psychosocial Outcomes Of Orthopedic Injuries: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Athlete And The Athletic Trainer, Hannah Barnett

Honors Projects

An analysis on the impact of the level of social support from athletic trainers on the outcomes of orthopedic injuries in athletes. The foundational model for this research is Wiese-Bjornstal’s Integrated Model (1998). This model examines the effect of athletes’ emotional responses on their recovery. Social support from the athletic trainer can help mediate negative emotional responses and encourage positive emotional responses, which is why social support is crucial to recovery. Athletes with higher levels of perceived social support from their athletic trainers had more success with rehabilitation. This report consists of a review of the existing literature on psychosocial …

A Qualitative Inquiry Of The Interdisciplinary Engagement Of Teacher's And Therapist's Providing Virtual Services To Children With Disabilities, Giovanna Rossi

Transformations: Presentation Slides

In this research project, my goal was to determine if using the sensory-based equipment, used in Sensory Fit Families, as a bridge helped promote interdisciplinary discussions leading to a better or more effective service delivery model. I did this research through virtual interviews and transcribing the data. I examined teachers’ and therapists’ perceptions toward interdisciplinary collaboration when delivering online (virtual) instruction to preschool-aged children with disabilities. With this, I was able to triangulate key information on relevant content, activities, and feedback that focus on a unique collaboration between Physical Education teachers, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Pathologists, and Special Education …

Blood Pressure Responses During Three Unweighted Conditions In A Lower Body Positive Pressure Treadmill, Danielle Toth, Madison Rees, Matthew Ballesteros, Bryanne N. Bellovary, James F. Hokanson, Erik Lind

Transformations: Presentation Slides

During exercise, lower leg muscle activation has been shown to increase venous return, exercise cardiac output, and arterial blood pressure (BP). Here we investigate BP at rest, with an increase in lower body pressure by unweighting volunteers in a lower body positive pressure treadmill (LBPP-TM). The purpose of this study was twofold; to determine if BP changes while standing over five-minute stages in response to four conditions. Nine participants (21.3±1.8 years) stood in a LBPP-TM in the following ordered conditions: 100%BWset (no unweighting, control), 70%BWset, 35%BWset, and 90%BWset (35%BWset is the greatest unweighted condition). A SunTech® automatic BP cuff measured …

Baroreflex Sensitivity In Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, Miguel Anselmo, Shandon Coffman, Mia Larson, Kathryn Vera, Emma Lee, Mary Mcconville, Michael Kyba, Manda L Keller-Ross

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), a common form of muscular dystrophy, is caused by a genetic mutation that alters DUX4 gene expression. This mutation contributes to significant skeletal muscle loss. Although it is suggested that cardiac muscle may be spared, people with FSHD have demonstrated autonomic dysregulation. It is unknown if baroreflex function, an important regulator of blood pressure (BP), is impaired in people with FSHD. We examined if baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) is blunted in patients with FSHD. Thirty minutes of resting BP, heart rate, and cardiovagal BRS were measured in 13 patients with FSHD (age: 50 ± 13 years, avg …

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy And Wound Healing, Karen E. Lucero Ortega

Student Publications

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been around since the 1860s and is now a well-established form of treatment. HBOT has been proven to be a safe therapeutic option and has been successful in treating non-healing wounds, traumatic wounds, and radiation-induced wounds. There has also been success in treating other conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, carbon monoxide poisoning, and decompression sickness with HBOT. The way HBOT works is by exposing the body to 100% pure oxygen in a closed chamber, which exceeds normal atmospheric pressure by two to three times. With HBOT, large amounts of oxygen enters the body, which …
