Visual-Mobility: Occupational Therapy's Role In Promoting Aging In Place Among Older Adult Conditions, Jody Shivey

MOT Student Capstones

While the number of aging individuals continues to grow in the U.S., the presence of chronic conditions often minimizes the opportunity to age in place. Moreover, age-related eye disorders inhibit one's access to the environment and participation in valued occupations, leading to a greater risk of falling and being displaced from the home. Despite an older adult's preference to remain in the home, lack of accommodation reduces the potential to do so. As such, an individualized approach to aging in place can be achieved through an occupational therapy practitioner and client partnership, facilitating the use of modifications and adaptations. This …

Occupational Therapy's Role In Preventing Geriatric Learned Dependency Through Caregiver Training, Anna Dediemar

MOT Student Capstones

Occupational therapy (OT) plays an important role in the training of geriatric caregivers to reduce learned dependency and caregiver burden, which can ultimately reduce hospital readmissions. Studies have highlighted the importance of caregiver education and training in promoting independence among geriatric patients, but OT's role in this area has yet to be explored. Caregivers play a crucial role in the geriatric patient's functional progress at home, so it is essential to educate and train them thoroughly to prevent dependency which may lead to negative patient outcomes, longer recovery times, increased risk of injury or complications, and higher readmission rates. The …

Vision training is vital for athletes because “athletic performance can be one of the most rigorous activities for the visual system” (Khanal, 2015) and is responsible for upward of 80% of the sensory input received during an athletic performance. However, it is often overlooked in traditional training regimens. Focusing on advanced clinical practice and program development, an unmet need for SVT at Origami Rehabilitation was achieved. The main goal was to create an SVT program that catered to …
