Improvement Of Patient Outcomes Through The Use Of Intensivist Nurse Practitioners, Leigha Fish
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing DNP Capstone Projects
This mixed retrospective and prospective cohort study aimed to compare mortality outcomes and associated factors between two cohorts of patients diagnosed with respiratory failure: on-call physicians and Interventional Nurse Practitioners (INPs). The analysis involved 143 patients, 82 in the on-call physician cohort and 61 in the INP cohort. Contrary to initial expectations, the two cohorts had no significant difference in mortality rates (p = 0.143). However, significant differences were observed in critical variables affecting mortality, including Time from Admit to Procedure Performance (p = 0.029), ICU Length of Stay (p = 0.013), and Ventilator Days (p = 0.048), with INP-managed …

The Effect Of Field-Related Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy On Skeletal Muscle Regeneration: Initial Experiments, Leah Angelica De Leon
2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Muscle trauma requires prompt recovery mechanisms, particularly in locations lacking specialized medical facilities. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy at 2.5 atmospheres absolute (ATA) positively impacts muscle recovery but necessitates specialized facilities. This study assessed the effectiveness of HBO2 therapy at a more accessible pressure level, 1.5 ATA, on muscle regeneration. Crush-injured muscle of 11 male and 8 female C57BL/6 mice were treated with mild HBO2 (100% oxygen at 1.5 ATA) or hyperoxia (100% oxygen at room atmospheric pressure). Regenerating myofiber properties were examined at 4- and 8-days post-injury, including the expression of a myosin-specific protein, developmental myosin heavy chain, myofiber cross-sectional …

Modifiers Of The Effects Of Different Dimensions Of Social Support On Cardiac Rehabilitation Adherence., Melissa Amraotkar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) is a Class I, level A indication for treatment and prevention further complications of CVD. The attendance rate for CR in the U.S. is very low, especially among female patients. Dimensions of social support, sex of the support provider, and the quality of primary intimate relationship are associated with health-promoting behavior and may influence CR adherence in patients. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between dimensions of social support and CR adherence, and whether these relationships were moderated by factors such …

Acute Mechanical Circulatory Support In The Cardiovascular Icu: Investigating The Effects Of An Interactive Cardiovascular Dynamics Simulation Program On Nursing Clinical Judgment., Casey Saulman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Education on acute mechanical circulatory support (AMCS), a therapy used in the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CICU) to manage cardiogenic shock (CGS) is limited for CICU nurses. There is a need to explore clinical judgment in CICU nurses and provide innovative learning experiences that foster judgment when managing AMCS. Methods: This mixed methods feasibility study investigated the effects of an interactive cardiovascular dynamics simulation program on CICU nurses’ knowledge, clinical reasoning, and clinical judgment. Semi-structured interviews explored the participants’ perceptions of the learning experience. Results: Twenty-one nurses completed the cardiovascular dynamics simulation program. The majority were white (85.7%), female …

Exploring The Nexus: The Influence Of Acculturation And Stress On Infant Outcomes Among Hispanic And Black/African American Adolescents, Mia I. Moreno
2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Numerous studies on acculturation and acculturative stress exist; however, findings are inconsistent and overlook an exploration of differences between Hispanic and Black/African American (B/AA) adolescents’ acculturation, stress, and birth outcomes. Despite societal and cultural challenges for both minorities, Hispanic women typically have positive birth outcomes comparable to White women, but B/AA women show an increased risk for negative birth outcomes. Further, minority and adolescent childbearing women frequently receive fewer prenatal care (PNC) visits than recommended which may impact birth outcomes. Therefore, my study sought to compare Hispanic and B/AA women’s birth outcomes assessing acculturation and stress and examine the relationship …

Effects Of Nonpharmacological And Pharmacological Interventions On The Management Of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Ellington Fagg
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome, commonly known as PCOS, is a metabolic endocrine disorder that affects many women of childbearing age. Although PCOS is a rather common disease, there is a general lack of knowledge on how to approach treatment for different types of women.
Purpose: The purpose of this literature review is to investigate both nonpharmacological and pharmacological treatment interventions that can be used to manage both the symptoms and underlying conditions associated with PCOS.
Methodology: Twenty articles that contained a mix of clinical trials and randomized control trials were reviewed for the evidence that is included in this literature …

Barriers To Breastfeeding In Low Socioeconomic Populations, Nikki Goldberg, Paige Daws
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
This literature review assessed and determined common themes among vulnerable populations for the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding habits. The barriers identified were divided into four themes including: lack of support, inflexible employment environment, differences of breastfeeding norms and education, and financial burden. Interventions identified in this literature review were community support programs and the implementation of hospital programs and initiatives to encourage breastfeeding. The need for this research and discussion stems from the sub-optimal infant feeding practices that contribute to infant mortality rates (Gallegos et al., 2020).

Dnp Final Report: Resilience Training For Entry-Level Bachelor Of Science In Nursing Students: An Evidence-Based Practice Project, Ashley N. Goar
DNP Final Reports
Nursing students have moderate to high levels of stress due to responsibilities, high expectations, course grades, and clinical requirements. The practice problem identified for this evidence-based practice project was that undergraduate nursing students had elevated levels of stress but did not know how to manage it. Multiple interventions have been used to address the problem, including positive thinking, mindfulness, resilience training, and distraction-focused therapies. The PICOT question “Will resilience training (I) for entry-level BSN students (P) affect stress (O) in less than three months (T)?” was developed to guide the systematic search for evidence. Based on the evidence, one hour …

Screening For Social Determinants Of Health Screening In The Primary Care Setting: A Quality Improvement Project, Arifa Khan
DNP Projects
Significance and Background: Social determinants play a major role in the overall health of our nation. While screening for social determinants of health (SDOH) in the primary care setting is encouraged, there is no streamlined process in place. Studies have determined that improved SDOH screenings can result in better patient outcomes and a decrease in healthcare costs. A protocol to improve SDOH screenings was needed to guide patient outcomes at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Connecticut.
Purpose: Deliver education to providers and healthcare staff across the health system on significance of social determinants of health and PRAPARE screening …

Nursing Capstones
A large rural healthcare system has onboarded over 200 internationally educated nurses (IENs) and needed to develop an evaluation method to determine longitudinal program outcomes. This project’s purpose was to develop an evaluation toolkit to be utilized by this health system to evaluate and support overall program outcomes. The Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey was identified through a literature review to be utilized within the toolkit to evaluate program outcomes. Utilizing a descriptive evaluation research design with post-survey, expert opinions were collected from 20 IEN clinical educators at this health system about their expected use and effectiveness of the toolkit …
