Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second most common cancer in humans and the fifth most prevalent worldwide. Although the survival rate of HCC has increased over time, postoperative recurrences remain high after a decade. HCC can be caused by both viral and non-viral diseases. There are two major global risk factors for HCC these are: hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). As part of routine health exams, complete blood counts can detect a variety of disorders, including infections, anemia, immune system disorders, and blood cancers. A complete blood count (CBC) can be used to perform a biochemical …

A metabolic illness known as diabetes mellitus (DM) is brought on by the body's decreased secretion and/or activity of the hormone insulin. The condition worsens, pathological alterations in the body, such as nephropathy, retinopathy, and cardiovascular problems, become inevitable. Type I and II DM are the two primary subtypes of DM. Oral hypoglycaemics are used to treat type II diabetes, while insulin replacement therapy is typically used to treat type I diabetes. Patients typically receive dual drug treatments. Despite using oral hypoglycemic medications as monotherapy, have not been able to accomplish their therapeutic goals with first-line therapy.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) is one of the most important infectious diseases in the world. This disease is considered as a dangerous zoonotic viral disease transmitted from animals to human by Hyalomma ticks. The first case was registered in Iraq in 1979, which led to the death of the patient, her doctor and some of the medical staff in Baghdad/Al-Yarmouq hospital. The current study was conducting on the data of (399) patients suffering from symptoms of hemorrhagic septicemia for two years (2021and 2022) which received from Central Disease Control (CDC) in Baghdad depending on serological test. Impact Of Mindfulness-Based Interventions On Nursing Burnout: An Integrative, Lily Myo
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Burnout in the nursing profession is prevalent and can be a significant burden for not only the individual nurse but to patients and the healthcare system at large. Burnout is considered by the World Health Organization as an occupational phenomena specifically resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed, and is not related to other life events. Given the need for support among registered nurses in reducing consequences of burnout and the emerging data about mindfulness based practices as a tool to enhance resilience, this integrated review seeks to understand if education on mindfulness based interventions can …

Faculty Authored Articles
Background:
The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the effects of curricular changes made to foster graduate students' understanding of how they can be catalysts of change. For more than a decade, the concept of the citizen nurse has been woven into coursework in nursing education, thus indicating an evaluation process was needed.
Method:
Ten oral history interviews were completed with current students or alumni. Data were analyzed for codes, allowing the final themes to emerge.
Results:
Two main themes emerged. Students reported (1) having a new understanding of what it means to be a nurse and (2) …

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Background: Cow's milk allergy (CMA) is the most complex and common food allergy in infants. Elimination of cow's milk from the diet and replacement with a specialized formula for infants with cow's milk allergy who cannot be breastfed is an established approach to minimize the risk of severe allergic reactions while avoiding nutritional deficiencies. Given the availability of multiple options, such as extensively hydrolyzed cow's milk-based formula (eHF-CM), aminoacid formula (AAF), hydrolyzed rice formula (HRF), and soy formula (SF), there is some uncertainty regarding which formula might represent the most suitable choice with respect to health outcomes. The addition of …

Decreasing Utilization Of Indwelling Urinary Catheters, Stacie Lomibao Fujimoto
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Increased utilization and prolonged dwell times of indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs) are directly related to the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs)- the fifth most common type of healthcare associated infection (HAI). The National Health and Safety Network (NHSN) uses the Standardized Utilization Ratio (SUR) metric to measure and compare device utilization in acute care hospitals across the nation. The national target SUR benchmark is 1.0, and a SUR under 1.0 indicates less device usage than NHSN predicts on an inpatient unit. In 2022 a Neuro Med-Surg unit experienced an overall SUR of 1.047 with 2 CAUTIs observed. A …

Background: Black patients with heart failure (HF) report worse quality of life (QoL) than White patients. Few investigators have examined mediators of the association between race and QoL, but depressive symptoms and sleep quality are associated with QoL.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether depressive symptoms and sleep quality are mediators of the relationship between race and QoL among patients with HF.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. We included 271 outpatients with HF. Self-reported race (White/Black), depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), and QoL (Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire) were collected …

Background: Limited knowledge exists regarding patients' denial of myocardial infarction (MI) before hospitalization for an MI. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and correlates of denial of MI in the prehospital phase of a confirmed MI. Methods: This secondary analysis included 166 hospitalized patients (mean [SD] age, 54.1 [10.5] years) who developed MI outside a healthcare facility and had high congruence between their experienced and expected symptoms. Measurements included the Denial subscale of the Brief COPE Inventory, the modified Response to Symptoms Questionnaire, and a Likert scale measuring perceived risk for MI. Patients who arrived …

Clinician's Perspectives On The Feasibility Of Patient Controlled Analgesia In Emergency Departments: A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Natasya Raja Azlan, Caroline Bulsara, Leanne Monterosso, Max Bulsara, Gail Ross-Adjie
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Despite pain being the most common reason for patients to visit the emergency department (ED), conventional pain management methods are often inadequate. Patient controlled analgesia (PCA), which allows patients to self-administer intravenous analgesia, is widely used across many hospital wards, however, is not routinely used in ED. We aimed to identify clinicians’ perceptions of PCA use in the ED setting. Methods: A qualitative descriptive approach was employed using semi-structured individual interviews conducted with ED clinicians from two hospitals in Western Australia. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. Data was analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Data saturation was achieved after …
