Crossing The Border: Improving Therapeutic Relationships Between First Generation Mexican Americans And Western Health Providers, Meg Petron

In health care, the needs of the patient are always first and determine the course of patient care. Due to the strong presence of Mexican Americans in the United States, and consequently the nation's hospitals, their expectations may be influenced by cultural norms. The aim of this presentation is to give health care providers the information they need to deal with Mexican cultural norms, traditional Mexican folk remedies, and general preexisting notions about Western health care. This information is necessary to create patient-client trust and, subsequently, a therapeutic relationship between patient and practitioner.

Sleep disorders affect millions of people worldwide. The purpose of this project was to determine if individuals with sleep disorders can achieve better outcomes with treatment that includes education classes and cognitive therapy than with current treatments which utilize medication and equipment. Seven articles, obtained from a search of CINAHL, JBI, Medline, and Psych Info, were reviewed and critiqued. Studies contained samples of men and women with sleep disorders, reviews of previous studies, and reviews of effective alternative treatments. Designs included systematic reviews, meta-analysis, randomized control, longitudinal two group pre-test posttest, and a narrative review. Findings showed that when traditional …

Structured Algorithm For Error Reduction In Chemotherapy Administration, Marianne Bundalian Tejada

Purpose. To develop an evidence-based structured algorithm tool that might be used by nursing leaders at a cancer center to decrease chemotherapy medication errors.

Background. In spite of available technology and known factors resulting in medication errors, chemotherapy errors remain the major cause of iatrogenic patient morbidity in hospitals (Gilbar, 2001; Heidt et al., 2001 ). A major risk factor for chemotherapy errors is lack of standardization in administration (ordering, dispensing, administration, monitoring). Failure to identify necessary staff skills/aptitude required to prevent errors may also be problematic.

Nursing simulations in Virtual Reality (VR) are increasingly becoming a valuable tool utilized in nursing education world-wide to enhance learning and provide additional contextual learning experiences. Although technology is becoming more user-friendly, there is still a need for technological support being provided to nursing students. This project identified student support needs that were necessary for VR nursing simulations.

This profile of the Commonwealth’s midwifery workforce provides state-level data on the demographic characteristics, employment context, and practice scope of midwives. It also offers a snapshot of populations served by mid-wives and public policy issues that affect midwives and midwifery care in Massachusetts. The report is based on a survey administered to midwives living and/or working in the state supplemented by in-depth interviews with five midwives, one obstetrician, and one state public health official. This report uniquely analyzes data collected from both certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and directentry midwives (DEMs), including certified professional midwives (CPMs); this summary distinguishes between these two …

Fibromyalgia is a female dominant chronic syndrome of diffuse muscle pain on palpation of at least 11 of 18 syndrome-associated tender points present for 3 months or longer. There is no cure. Self-care management involving multimodal integrative medicine approaches may increase treatment involvement resulting in a sense of control and pain relief. This embedded, single case study explored 'how' and 'why' an informant with fibromyalgia chose to initiate and continue self-care management using essential oils over several years to treat symptoms within context reality. Death is a universal phenomenon. Of all health professionals, the nurse is the most likely one to be present at the time of death. Although nursing curricula provide mandatory clinical experiences in labor and delivery, pediatrics, psychiatry and adult medical surgical areas, there is no mandatory requirement for a clinical experience with death. In fact, before 1999, there was not even a requirement to teach about death and dying in undergraduate nursing curricula. Professional mandates call for nurses to respond with compassion (e.g., American Nurses Association [ANA] Code of Ethics, International Council of Nurses [ICN]) and countless hospital mission and vision statements prominently display compassion as their fundamental purpose. As a component of healthcare and nursing models, however, defining characteristics and standards are inconsistent.
