The purpose of this project is to improve the orientation experience of the new graduate nurse at a metropolitan Minnesota hospital through the development of a structured mentoring program. The transition from student nurse to professional nurse is stressful for new graduate nurses. Stress combined with increased technology and patient acuity in the acute care setting has led to many new graduate nurses leaving the profession, contributing to the anticipated nursing shortage. The goal of the project is to provide a voice for the nursing staff by adding their input on potential changes to the unit and to ultimately build stronger relationships among nurses. Involving staff from the beginning, this project started with a communication needs assessment completed in one unit at a small rural hospital in the Midwest. This included session meetings and a ballot survey. A project was designed to strengthen feedback among nurses on the unit, addressing horizontal violence in the workplace, and relating to Watson's nursing care theory. Nurses are exposed to sickness, sadness, trauma, suffbring, terminal illnesses, and potentially harmful contagions in their daily work. Nurses tend to care for others more than they care for themselves and can become overwhelmed, lose their resilience, and burnout. Nurses who practice daily self-care benefit by experiencing greater self-esteem, resilience, and ultimately wisdom and compassion. The purpose of this research was to explore the lived experience of graduate nurses (GNs) who made the transition from academic to practice environment in the high-acuity setting of a Level 1 trauma center. These GNs entered clinical practice through a nurse residency program at Truman Medical Center (TMC) emergency department (ED) in Kansas City, Missouri. This paper discusses the process of bringing public health nursing together with community members to implement a Healthy Homes primary prevention project that improves the environment for people living in the Rondo Neighborhood of Saint Paul. The Rondo Neighborhood has a high ratio of low-income people. People living in lower socio-economic neighborhoods have poorer health outcomes, partially because of systemic environmental conditions. Objective

The lack of standardized reference range for the homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index has limited its clinical application. This study defines the reference range of HOMA-IR index in an adult Hispanic population based with machine learning methods.

Methods

This study investigated a Hispanic population of 1854 adults, randomly selected on the basis of 2000 Census tract data in the city of Brownsville, Cameron County. Machine learning methods, support vector machine (SVM) and Bayesian Logistic Regression (BLR), were used to automatically identify measurable variables using standardized values that correlate with HOMA-IR; K-means clustering was then used to classify …

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine trends in the influence of religiosity on sexual activity of Latina adolescents in the United States from 1995 to 2008 and to determine if differences existed between the Mexican American and other Latina groups.

Methods: The sample comprised the subset of unmarried, 15–21-year-old (mean 17 years) Latina female respondents in the 1995 (n=267), 2002 (n=306), and 2006–2008 (n=400) National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) datasets. It is important for nursing students to be exposed to critical patient care scenarios because high stress clinical situations, such as patient codes, occur unexpectedly and infrequently in the clinical setting. In addition, it is important for nursing students to be exposed to the reality of patient death in order to help them overcome fears associated with death and to develop effective coping strategies. This paper describes collaboration between the nursing librarian and faculty members teaching Scholarly Inquiry in Nursing (Nursing Research), a course for baccalaureate nursing students. Workshops presented by the librarian enhanced nursing students' information literacy skills, particularly related to accessing evidence-based sources. Student perceptions of the library integration with Scholarly Inquiry in Nursing are presented, and suggest that librarians empower them with knowledge and skills that enhance their ability to integrate evidence into their nursing practice.

This study compared workplace protection factors (WPFs) for five different contaminants (endotoxin, fungal spores, (1→3)-β-D-glucan, total particle mass, and total particle number) provided by an N95 elastomeric respirator (ER) and an N95 filtering facepiece respirator (FFR). We previously reported size-selective WPFs for total particle numbers for the ER and FFR, whereas the current article is focused on WPFs for bioaerosols and total particle mass. Farm workers (n = 25) wore the ER and FFR while performing activities at eight locations representing horse farms, pig barns, and grain handling facilities. By 2015, it is estimated that nearly half of those living with HIV in the US will be 50 years of age and older. This dramatic change in the demographics of this clinical population represents unique challenges for patients, health care providers, and society-at-large. Fortunately, because of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and healthy lifestyle choices, it is now possible for many infected with HIV to age successfully with this disease; however, this depends upon one’s definition of successful aging. Poor mental health is a global epidemic with women affected more often compared to men. Compromised mental health jeopardizes women's health and functioning and also the health and wellbeing of their children. To promote women's mental health, principles of community participatory methods were used to design and implement a mental health program, which was predicated on empirical research, sensitive to community culture and needs, and delivered by Lady Health Workers in an urban slum area of Karachi, Pakistan. The sequential steps of community participation, program development, implementation and strategies for sustainability are described.

Background: At some point in the disease process many persons with dementia (PWD) will have a missing incident and be unable to safely return to their care setting. In previous research studies, researchers have begun to question whether this phenomenon should continue to be called wandering since the antecedents and characteristics of a missing incident are dissimilar to accepted definitions of wandering in dementia. Rates of suicide and suicidality have risen in many countries in recent years and in Ireland this trend has been particularly evident among young men (NOSP, 2005), focusing attention on how best to respond to this group. Although mental health professionals have been identified as a key group to respond to the suicidal person, it has been suggested that they are ill-prepared for working in this area (Maltsberger & Goldblatt, 1996; Ting et al., 2006; Cutcliffe & Stevenson, 2007). The purpose of this study was to establish a foundation for developing an evidence-based assessment guideline to be used by nursing and medical personnel when evaluating a firefighter's ability to return to work after a lower extremity injury. Two on-line survey instruments were used to record the opinions and beliefs of healthcare providers and firefighters. The final samples included 63 California healthcare providers (with and without professional work experience with firefighters) and 312 California firefighters.
