The Impact Of A Diabetes Self-Management Program On Adult Hispanics In Eastern Coachella Valley, Brijesh Naranbhai Patel

The purpose of this clinical project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-management diabetes education program, designed for the underserved Hispanic population in the Eastern Coachella Valley, California. The project was conducted as part of a clinical assignment in the graduate nursing program at California State University, San Bernardino. Thirty-eight participants were recruited from Indio Family Center. In a face-to-face meeting with a diabetic educator, individual participants completed a self-care activity survey and received diabetes related education.

The Effects Of A Hospitalized Elderly Mobility Pilot Program: A Secondary Analysis, Natalie Alexandrovna Richmeier

The purpose of this research is to conduct a secondary analysis of data from an Elderly Inpatient Mobility Program pilot tested in a 545 bed hospital. Mobility and ambulation are essential functions that help people maintain their health. They are especially important for the elderly whose functions may be compromised by age related changes of decreased muscle strength and elasticity, bone fragility, ligaments deterioration, decreased endurance, and acquired chronic conditions.

The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a Best Evidence Statement (BESt) for the confirmation of nasogastric or orogastric tube placement in hospitalized children. The nose-ear-xiphoid (NEX) method of measurement and auscultatory method of tube verification is commonly used but is unreliable and has resulted in misplaced tubes as well as poor patient outcomes. Radiography is considered the gold standard however the risks outweigh the benefits due to excessive radiation exposure, increases in healthcare costs and delay in delivery of care. Methods which utilize bedside testing and proper tube measurement have been shown to be effective in nasogastric …

Horizontal violence among nurses is recognized as a major problem in hospitals; however, the origins and effects on patient care have not been studied. This study described the incidence of horizontal violence among hospital staff RNs and tested 2 hypotheses about the social origins of this behavior. A random sample of 175 hospital staff RNs drawn from the California Board of Registered Nursing's mailing list was surveyed. Horizontal violence was reported by 21.1% (n = 37) of participating nurses. Hypotheses were supported. The purpose of this pilot was to describe the impact of a group teaching preparation on Baccalaureate nursing students' perceived knowledge, level of preparation and level of comfort regarding group teaching. Thirty-one California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) Palm Desert Campus (PDC) nursing students attended a four-hour workshop discussing basic group teaching skills and teaching strategies to be successful even in unexpected situations.

The WMU Center for Gerontology was established in 2010 and builds on a strong tradition of gerontology education offered at WMU from the late 1970s to 2004. The undergraduate minor has been revised and is again offered. The previous graduate certificate in gerontology has not yet been reestablished.

This project sought to determine the relative value of a graduate certificate in gerontology vs. a masters degree in gerontology.

Limited literature exists which examines how parents of infants hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) transition from their infant’s NICU hospital stay to home. This study examines the question, “What are the experiences of parents during their infant’s transition from the NICU to home? Grounded theory methods served as the paradigm to explore twelve NICU parents’ experiences during their infant’s transition. Implementation of family presence in adult ICUs remains controversial for nurses. African American patients have been reported as having a greater number of aggressive cancer treatments compared to Caucasians (McWayne & Heiney, 2005; Meeske et al., 2009; Ridner & Dietrich, 2008), and have higher incidence of BCRLE due axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) and radiation intervention (Thomas-MacLean, Miedema, Tateemichi, 2005). Research regarding BCRLE has used BCRLE samples comprised almost exclusively of married and well-educated Caucasian women. Few studies (Bowman, Deimling, Smerglia, Sage, & Kahana, 2003; Eversley et al., 2005; Joslyn, 2002; McWayne & Heiney, 2005) have included sizeable numbers of African American breast cancer survivors.
