Tonsillectomy And Weight Gain In Children, Is There A Correlation?, Jacqueline M. Doucette
Nursing Masters
The relationship between tonsillectomy and postoperative weight gain in children has been studied across the globe. Indications for tonsillectomy include chronic recurrent tonsillitis and obstructive sleep apnea. This phenomenon of weight gain postoperatively and the many possible causes were the focus of this systematic review. Relationships between adenotonsillectomy/tonsillectomy, dietary habits, obstructive sleep apnea, motor activity, hyperactivity, insulin-like growth factor-1, insulin growth factor binding protein -3, and weight gain were investigated. Findings supported a relationship between adenotonsillectomy/tonsillectomy and postoperative weight gain, decreased sleep apnea, decreased motor activity and hyperactivity, an affinity for sugary and fatty foods, and an increase in insulin …

Conceptualizing Group Dynamics From Our Clients’ Perspective: Development Of The Conceptualization Of Group Dynamics Inventory, Kevin A. Tate Phd, Edil Torres Rivera, William L. Conwill, David Miller, Ana Puig
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
There is a clear call in group counseling practice and training for evidence-based practice (ACA, 2005; ASGW, 2008; CACREP, 2009). At the same time, group counselors also are asked to keep clients' experience at the center of their work (ASGW, 2012). This article outlines the authors' effort to develop and study an instrument designed to measure group counselors' conceptualization skill using group members' subjective perceptions as a foundation. Descriptions of the instrument's internal reliability, construct validity, and generalizability will be presented, as well as suggestions for conducting research on this instrument in future studies.

The Effect Of Either Topical Menthol Or A Placebo On Functioning And Knee Pain Among Patients With Knee Oa, Robert V. Topp, Joseph A. Brosky, David Pieschel
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common health problem with symptoms including reduced functioning and joint pain. Protracted pharmacological management of knee OA is associated with side effects including gastrointestinal, renal, and neurological dysfunction.Menthol gels have been used with limited empirical support to relieve pain and improve functioning among individual with OA. The purpose of this study was to compare the ability to complete functional tasks and knee pain while completing functional tasks among patients with knee OA after topical application of either 3.5% menthol gel or an inert placebo gel. Twenty individuals with knee OA volunteered to complete 2 data collection …

A Retrospective Review Of Sliding Scale Vs. Basal/Bolus Insulin Protocols, Heidi L. Rymaszewski, Susan Breakwell
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Purpose
The purpose was to assess the differences between subcutaneous basal/bolus and sliding scale insulin protocols in patients admitted with type 2 diabetes on non-critical care units.
Methods
A retrospective review of electronic medical records was conducted on a convenience sample of inpatients in a central-city teaching hospital.
Results
The findings were that basal/bolus protocols achieved American Diabetes Association glycemic targets on fasting, mean, and discharge blood glucoses.
Conclusions
This study provided insight into glycemic control and interdisciplinary education needs at this hospital. Evidence revealed that basal/bolus insulin protocols can achieve glycemic targets.

Nutrition Intervention To Decrease Symptoms In Patients With Advanced Heart Failure, Terry A. Lennie, Debra K. Moser, Martha J. Biddle, Darlene Welsh, Geza G. Bruckner, D. Travis Thomas, Mary Kay Rayens, Alison L. Bailey
Nursing Faculty Publications
For a majority of patients with advanced heart failure, there is a need for complementary, non-pharmacologic interventions that could be easily implemented by health care providers to provide palliative care. Three major pathologic pathways underlying heart failure symptoms have been identified: fluid overload, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Prior research has demonstrated that three nutrients-sodium, omega-3 fatty acids, and lycopene-can alter these pathologic pathways. Therefore, the purposes of this study are to test the effects of a 6-month nutrition intervention of dietary sodium reduction combined with supplementation of lycopene and omega-3 fatty acids on heart failure symptoms, health-related quality of life, …

HRQL is an important aspect of chronic illnesses such as diabetes and needs to be considered by healthcare providers. It is one of the most important outcomes of healthcare interventions, representing an integral public health goal in Healthy People 2000, 2010, and 2020. Arab Americans (AAs), one of the most rapidly growing minorities in United States, tend to have a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes. The purpose of this study was to describe determinants of HRQL, including social support attitude, religiosity, and select demographics for AA patients with type 2 diabetes. A descriptive correlational study using a cross sectional …

Effects Of An Interprofessional Simulation Activity To Improve Students' Perceptions Of Other Healthcare Professions, Chase Raymond Poulsen
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
Healthcare professionals have historically been educated and trained by members of their own profession within a curriculum that reinforces their individual discipline-specific strengths. This differentiation has contributed to students having little interaction with other professionals until after they have entered the workforce and consequently little formal education in collaboration or integration. The purpose of this mixed-method study was to evaluate the impact of an interprofessional (IP) collaborative activity on student's perceptions of the others discipline for the improvement in care of medical patients.
The sample population consisted of students from two programs, nursing (n=40) and respiratory therapy (n=33). Students were …

Topical Menthol, Ice, Peripheral Blood Flow, And Perceived Discomfort, Robert V. Topp, Elizabeth R. Ledford, Dean E. Jacks
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Context : Injury management commonly includes decreasing arterial blood flow to the affected site in an attempt to reduce microvascular blood flow and edema and limit the induction of inflammation. Applied separately, ice and menthol gel decrease arterial blood flow, but the combined effects of ice and menthol gel on arterial blood flow are unknown.
Objectives : To compare radial artery blood flow, arterial diameter, and perceived discomfort before and after the application of 1 of 4 treatment conditions.
Design : Experimental crossover design.
Setting : Clinical laboratory.
Participants or Other Participants : Ten healthy men, 9 healthy women (mean …

Psychometrics Of The Depressive Cognition Scale In Caregivers Of Persons With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Abir K. Bekhet, Jaclene A. Zauszniewski
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Caregivers of persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are prone to depression, and early identification of cognitive depressive symptoms is important to prevent the development of clinical depression. The Depressive Cognition Scale (DCS) can be used for early detection, but the scale's psychometrics has not been tested in caregivers of persons with ASD. In this study, 95 caregivers of persons with ASD completed the eight-item DCS and measures of caregiver burden and resourcefulness. A Cronbach's alpha of .90 indicated internal consistency. Construct validity was supported by significant correlations with caregiver burden (.59) and resourcefulness (− .57). Principal component factor analysis …

Lack Of Father Involvement In Research On Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Maternal Parenting Stress And Family Functioning, Norah L. Johnson, Pippa Simpson
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has an estimated prevalence of greater than 1% of people in the US. Caring for children with ASD is stressful and challenging for parents. The purpose of the study is to understand the ramifications of the findings of a spouse/father's lack of participation for a study focused on stress and family functioning that attempted to recruit both parents of a child with ASD. The Kruskal-Wallis test compared medians of three groups of mothers of children with ASD in order to assess differences in parenting stress and family functioning discrepancy depending on their marital status and spouse …
