An Evaluation Of The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, Joan Sevy Majers 2014 Wright State University - Main Campus

An Evaluation Of The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, Joan Sevy Majers

Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Projects

The prevalence and costs of chronic disease continue to escalate with the aging of the population and continued advancements in medical care. Self-management of chronic disease may be an alternative approach to care that could assist in moving away from a disease-oriented model to health-oriented one. Outcomes from chronic disease self-management programs are promising but inconsistent across disease entities and populations. Among the Veteran population, chronic disease self-management programs have been implemented in a number of Veteran Affairs facilities. The purpose of this project was to evaluate specific outcomes from the chronic disease self-management program conducted in the five medical …

Nurses Perceptions Of Shared Governance Two Years Post Implementation Of A Councilor Shared Governance Model, Kathleen L. Wilson 2014 Wright State University - Main Campus

Nurses Perceptions Of Shared Governance Two Years Post Implementation Of A Councilor Shared Governance Model, Kathleen L. Wilson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Projects

Participation in shared governance councils can provide nurses with an opportunity for input into organizational policies that influence quality health care outcomes. Nurse leaders are diligently seeking a practice model that has a foundation of engagement of staff in decision making, quality outcomes, competency, evidence-based practice, shared power and job satisfaction. With the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) of 2010, health care systems can expect an influx of some 30 million more patients (Pfeifer, 2013). In addition, mandated purchase of health care insurance will replace the fee for service model with one that ties payment to outcomes and …

Assessing Provider Adherence To An Emergency Contraception Guideline In Reproductive Age Women, Amber E. Davis 2014 University of Kentucky

Routine Versus Ad Hoc Screening For Acute Stress Following Injury: Who Would Benefit And What Are The Opportunities For Prevention, Nathaniel Bell, Boris Sobolev, Stephen Anderson, Robert Hewko, Richard K. Simons

Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND:

Screening for acute stress is not part of routine trauma care owing in part to high variability of acute stress symptoms in identifying later onset of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The objective of this pilot study was to assess the sensitivity, specificity, and power to predict onset of PTSD symptoms at 1 and 4 months using a routine screening program in comparison to current ad hoc referral practice.

METHODS:

Prospective cross-sectional observational study of a sample of hospitalized trauma patients over a four-month period from a level-I hospital in Canada. Baseline assessments of acute stress (ASD) and subsyndromal ASD …

Implementation Of A Nurse-Initiated Topical Anesthesia Protocol, Jennifer Anderson 2014 South Dakota State University

Implementation Of A Nurse-Initiated Topical Anesthesia Protocol, Jennifer Anderson

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Although topical anesthetics are a safe, effective, and non-invasive alternative to infiltrated anesthesia for laceration repair, their availability to providers continues to limit their use. This practice innovation project developed a protocol for the nurse-initiated anesthesia for patients over one year of age presenting to a critical access hospital emergency department with lacerations. Pre and post implementation chart reviews were utilized to determine the effectiveness of the implementation of this protocol. This project has potential to impact patient pain levels, anxiety, restraint use, total treatment time, and patient satisfaction scores.

Implementing A Screening Pathway For Identifying Patients At Risk For Obstructive Sleep Apnea In Primary Care, Emily Fett 2014 South Dakota State University

Implementing A Screening Pathway For Identifying Patients At Risk For Obstructive Sleep Apnea In Primary Care, Emily Fett

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is emerging as a significant health problem largely underrecognized by health care providers in the primary care setting (Pagel, 2008). The intent of this practice innovation project was to change and reduce the variation in practice for OSA screening that did not follow what is known about best practices. In this study, a preexperimental one-group pretest-posttest design was carried out to evaluate the outcomes associated with implementing an evidence-based screening pathway into practice for OSA based on the recommendations set forth in a clinical practice guideline recently published by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (Epstein …

Role Of The "Tobacco Free Teens" Mobile Application In Adolescent Smoking, Juawanna L. Schuller 2014 University of Kentucky

Role Of The "Tobacco Free Teens" Mobile Application In Adolescent Smoking, Juawanna L. Schuller

DNP Projects

Adolescent tobacco use rates have plateaued. Tobacco use education is not mandatory in all states, yet schools remain a good opportunity to reach this population. School nurses should be able to identify components of effective tobacco use prevention education programs and learn to overcome barriers to implementation of these programs. The "Tobacco Free Teens" mobile application is a novel tool that may decrease adolescent tobacco use rates. A pilot study found that the Tobacco Free Teens mobile application was satisfactory to most participants but appealed to girls more than boys. Further research is needed to determine the effectiveness of this …

Nursing Papers and Journal Articles

Background: This debate discusses the potential merits of a New Graduate Nurse Transition to Primary Health Care Program as an untested but potential nursing workforce development and sustainability strategy. Increasingly in Australia, health policy is focusing on the role of general practice and multidisciplinary teams in meeting the service needs of ageing populations in the community. Primary health care nurses who work in general practice are integral members of the multidisciplinary team but this workforce is ageing and predicted to face increasing shortages in the future. At the same time, Australia is currently experiencing a surplus of and a corresponding …

An Analysis Of The Cause, Effect & Control Of Hyperlipidemia From A Nursing Perspective, Melissa Rodgers 2014 Columbus State University

An Analysis Of The Cause, Effect & Control Of Hyperlipidemia From A Nursing Perspective, Melissa Rodgers

Theses and Dissertations

Two of the top four causes of death worldwide, heart disease and stroke, are related to hyperlipidemia, elevated cholesterol levels; these two illnesses account for approximately seventeen million deaths each year (World Health Organization, 2014). In order to combat the prevalence of these illnesses, the National Cholesterol Educational Panel has issued guidelines regarding cholesterol management. Extensive research has been published concerning cholesterol management. However, a gap remains between evidenced-based practice and community awareness of this phenomenon. This manuscript compiles research from peer reviewed nursing journals and acclaimed government and national organizations to express the cause, effect, and control of hyperlipidemia …

Developing Entry-To-Practice Nursing Informatics Competencies For Registered Nurses, Lynn M. Nagle, Kristine Crosby, Noreen Frisch, Elizabeth Borycki, Lorie Donelle Phd, Rn, Fcan, Kathryn Hannah, Alexandra Harris, Sylvie Jetté, Tracy Shaben

Publications

Information and communication technologies (ICT) have brought about significant changes to the processes of health care delivery and changed how nurses perform in clinical, administrative, academic, and research settings. Because the potential benefits of ICT are significant, it is critical that new nurses have the knowledge and skills in informatics to provide safe and effective care. Despite the prevalence of technology in our day to day lives, and the potential significant benefits to patients, new nurses may not be prepared to work in this evolving reality. An important step in addressing this need for ICT preparation is to ensure that …

Comparative Transcriptome Profiling Of Two Tibetan Wild Barley Genotypes In Responses To Low Potassium, Jianbin Zeng, Xiaoyan He, Dezhi Wu, Bo Zhu, Shengguan Cai, Umme Aktari Nadira, Zahra Jabeen, Guoping Zhang 2014 University of South Carolina

Comparative Transcriptome Profiling Of Two Tibetan Wild Barley Genotypes In Responses To Low Potassium, Jianbin Zeng, Xiaoyan He, Dezhi Wu, Bo Zhu, Shengguan Cai, Umme Aktari Nadira, Zahra Jabeen, Guoping Zhang

Publications

Potassium (K) deficiency is one of the major factors affecting crop growth and productivity. Development of low-K tolerant crops is an effective approach to solve the nutritional deficiency in agricultural production. Tibetan annual wild barley is rich in genetic diversity and can grow normally under poor soils, including low-K supply. However, the molecular mechanism about low K tolerance is still poorly understood. In this study, Illumina RNA-Sequencing was performed using two Tibetan wild barley genotypes differing in low K tolerance (XZ153, tolerant and XZ141, sensitive), to determine the genotypic difference in transcriptome profiling. We identified a total of 692 differentially …

Evidence-Based Practice In Action: Ensuring Quality Of Pediatric Assessment Frequency, Katelyn McDonald 2014 Illinois Wesleyan University

Evidence-Based Practice In Action: Ensuring Quality Of Pediatric Assessment Frequency, Katelyn Mcdonald

Honors Projects

Optimal head to toe assessment frequency in hospitalized pediatric patients is unknown. Although pediatric patients have many accommodations based on their age, developmental state, and varied needs, healthcare professionals have not published any research regarding the optimal frequency for registered nurses to perform head-to-toe assessments in hospitalized pediatric patients. Healthcare professionals must make decisions based on evidence-based practice. A change in pediatric assessment intervals was proposed at a Midwestern regional medical center. The purpose of this pilot study was to ensure patient safety and staff satisfaction following a policy change in head-to-toe assessment frequency Chart audits were performed on all …

Development Of A Measure Of Nurse Vigilance From The Patient ' S Perspective: A Content Validity Study, Jennifer Boll

Honors Projects

Problem: Since the landmark Institute of Medicine report, To Err is Human, was published in 1999, patient safety has become a major concern in healthcare systems. Although attention is being given to patient safety and preventing patient morbidity and mortality, experts indicate that little progress has been made in decreasing healthcare errors. Vigilance is a phenomenon often identified in the literature as a means to promote patient safety and well-being. Purpose: The aim of this study was to establish content validity in a newly developed instrument designed to measure nurse vigilance from a patient perspective. Method: Generated 130 items and …

School Nurse Job Satisfaction, Provision Of Health Education, And Student Attendence, Molly G. Guenette 2014 Illinois Wesleyan University

School Nurse Job Satisfaction, Provision Of Health Education, And Student Attendence, Molly G. Guenette

Honors Projects

School nurses have a large scope of practice (American Nurses Association [ANA] & National Association of School Nurses [NASN], 2011). However, school administrators often misunderstand, and therefore under appreciate, the school nurses' role (Junious et al., 2004). In addition, few schools meet the 1 :750 nurse to student ratio recommended by the NASN and the ANA (2011); high nurse to student ratios negatively affect school nurses' job satisfaction (Maughn & Adams, 2011). Several studies found that interventions by the school nurse positively impacted students (Bonauito, 2007; Denny et al., 2012), while others have linked the presence of a school nurse …
