A School-Based Intervention’S Impact On Children’S Knowledge And Self-Efficacy Related To Physical Activity And Nutrition: A Pilot Study, Katherine Turley Jenkins

Theses and Dissertations

Childhood obesity has become epidemic in the United States. One of the best places to combat this problem is within the school system. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in exercise self-efficacy, science interest, and science knowledge of children who participated in a school-based anatomy and healthy lifestyle intervention called Anatomy Academy. In this pilot study, 212 study participants were recruited from 5th and 6th grade children enrolled in one of three charter schools who participated in our 7-week intervention, Anatomy Academy. Children completed four questionnaires pre and post intervention: (1) a science knowledge questionnaire, (2) a …

The Impact Of The Ohana Mana Challenge On Native Hawaiian And Pacific Islander Children, Kristin Kay Van Tassell 2014 Brigham Young University - Provo

The Impact Of The Ohana Mana Challenge On Native Hawaiian And Pacific Islander Children, Kristin Kay Van Tassell

Theses and Dissertations

In this four-week, family-focused pilot intervention study, researchers studied the impact of culturally relevant nutrition and activity sessions on eleven children from eight Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) families. Mixed methods were used in analysis. In their favorite meal drawings, children included more fruits and vegetables at week four than week one, which was consistent with their self-reported intake of healthy foods that were new to them. From week one to four, mean total scores increased on the nutrition and exercise knowledge exercise questionnaire and the physical activity self-efficacy tool; however, the mean total score decreased on healthy diet …

Genetic Architecture Of Limit Dextrinase Inhibitor (Ldi) Activity In Tibetan Wild Barley, Yuqing Huang, Shengguan Cai, Lingzhen Ye, Yong Han, Dezhi Wu, Fei Dai, Chengdao Li, Guoping Zhang 2014 University of South Carolina

Genetic Architecture Of Limit Dextrinase Inhibitor (Ldi) Activity In Tibetan Wild Barley, Yuqing Huang, Shengguan Cai, Lingzhen Ye, Yong Han, Dezhi Wu, Fei Dai, Chengdao Li, Guoping Zhang

Publications

BACKGROUND: Limit dextrinase inhibitor (LDI) inhibits starch degradation in barley grains during malting because it binds with limit dextrinase (LD). There is a wide genetic variation in LDI synthesis and inactivation during barley grain development and germination. However, the genetic control of LDI activity remains little understood. RESULTS: In this study, association analysis was performed on 162 Tibetan wild accessions by using LDI activity, 835 Diversity Arrays Technology (DArT) markers and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the gene HvLDI encoding LDI. Two DArT markers, bpb-8347, bpb-0068, and 31 SNPs of HvLDI were significantly associated with LDI activity, explaining 10.0%, 6.6% …

Assessing Awareness Of The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act Of 2008 (Gina) Among Nurse Practitioners, Mary Steck 2014 Clemson University

Assessing Awareness Of The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act Of 2008 (Gina) Among Nurse Practitioners, Mary Steck

All Dissertations

Genetic advancements during the latter part of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century have presented individuals, the medical community, and legislators at state and federal levels, with numerous genetic discrimination predicaments. Oncology nurses need to be knowledgeable about GINA (The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008) and its applications to clinical practice. GINA is the first federal law passed to protect United States' citizens with inherited disorders from being treated unfairly due to their genetic make-up. Understanding the legislation known as GINA, including how it modifies existing federal laws governing health insurance coverage and employment discrimination, …

Portion Size Selection In Relation To Hemoglobin A1cs, Brian L. Dixon

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Obesity has been recognized as an increasing issue within our country. Obesity contributes to many health related issues, including type 2 diabetes mellitus. Portion size is a factor that has generated clinical research interest. The aim of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between management of diabetes measured by hemoglobin A1c and portion size selection for type 2 diabetics. In this study, subjects selected portion sizes of four different foods. Data were compared to recent A1c levels. Due to the small sample size, nonparametric statistical analysis was used. The relationship of grain portion weight selection and …

Examining General Versus Condition-Specific Health Related Quality Of Life Across Weight Categories In An Adolescent Sample, Autumn G. Dalton

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Approximately 34% of adolescents are overweight or obese which can be accompanied by physical, psychosocial, and economic consequences. Increasingly, pediatric overweight/obesity research has focused on Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) as a health outcome. This study examined differences in HRQoL across weight categories in adolescents, specifically, the sensitivity of using a general versus condition-specific measure. Further, the influence of gender was explored.

Data were extracted from Wave 2 of Team Up for Healthy Living, a school-based obesity prevention program targeting adolescents in Southern Appalachia. Participants (N = 918; 50% Female; 93% Caucasian; 90% 9th graders) completed …

Palliative And End-Of-Life Care: Precepts And Ethics For The Orthopaedic Population, Cheryl L. Petersen, Susan Breakwell, Margaret Callahan

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Since the emergence of reports such as the National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care (2013) and the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses Palliative Care Consensus Document (2005), there continues to be a growing recognition of the multiple adverse effects of serious illness and chronic conditions, as well as the potential benefits of receiving palliative or end-of-life care. As modern technology expands its ability to support life, ethical dilemmas may be encountered in the provision of palliative or end-of-life care. Through integration of the precepts of palliative care and consideration of the relevant ethical principles, orthopaedic nurses may best meet …

Retirement And The Registered Nurse: The Saver Study, Shanna Field Keele 2014 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Retirement And The Registered Nurse: The Saver Study, Shanna Field Keele

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Sixty percent of U.S. registered nurses (RNs) age 45-60 have not participated in retirement planning. Further, in the next 10 to 15 years, this cohort of 1 million RNs will reach retirement age. Previous RN retirement studies have focused on RN retirement outlook, RN economic preparation for retirement, or retirement intent. However, no contemporary research explores the psychological influences in RN retirement preparation; a concern since retirement benefits have been suggested as a retention strategy to improve patient care outcomes, satisfaction, and safety by reducing RN turnover. The purpose of the SAVER study was to identify predictors of future time …

Successful Aging In The United States And China : A Theoretical Basis To Guide Nursing Research, Practice, And Policy., Valerie Lander McCarthy, Hong Ji, Jiying Ling 2014 University of Louisville

Successful Aging In The United States And China : A Theoretical Basis To Guide Nursing Research, Practice, And Policy., Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Hong Ji, Jiying Ling

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Successful aging is an idea gaining increasing attention given the exponential growth in the older adult population. Criteria and definitions within multiple disciplines vary greatly in Western literature, with no consensus on its meaning. Moreover, sociocultural, economic and political differences between the Western view of successful aging and its use in China – with the world’s largest older adult population – add to the confusion. Similarities and differences in the meaning of successful aging in the United States and China are examined and the potential for a common definition that is useful to nursing in both countries is explored. Using …

The Experience Of Latino Parents Of Hospitalized Children During Family Centered Rounds, Lisa Ann Walker-Vischer

Doctoral Projects

Problem: Hospitalization of a child is stressful. The parental role is altered and parents have a primary need to receive timely information. Family centered rounds (FCR) provide a mechanism to exchange information and facilitates shared decision making with the medical team while parents advocate for their child's needs. FCR has been linked to increased satisfaction and improved outcomes. A recent study suggests that Latino parents have a suboptimal experience related to language barriers and a lack of empowerment. The purpose of this study is to describe the experience of Latino parents of hospitalized children during FCR in a public safety …
