Safety Hazards Education For Mothers Who Are Homeless: Target Teaching To Improve Knowledge Of Safety Hazards For Children Under Five Years Of Age, Susan Halpern Fliesher
Dissertations
The leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children in the U. S. is unintentional injury (Center for Disease Control Child Injury Report, 2000 to 2006), but there is little information about homeless mothers with children and child unintentional injury. Frencher et al. (2010) compared lower socioeconomic families with children with housing to homeless families with children, and found that unintentional injury was 13% higher among homeless children. Mothers who are homeless often need to navigate a variety of temporary housing and may lack understanding of child safety hazards in strange environments, limiting their ability to ensure their children’s safety …

Oncology Nurses' Suggestions For Improving Obstacles In End-Of-Life Care, Rosanne Johnson Oliver
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this paper was to determine the most important changes needed to improve the quality of end-of-life (EOL) care to terminal cancer patients as perceived by experienced oncology nurses. The study was designed as a cross-sectional survey, sampling 1,000 Oncology Nursing Society members from the United States with experience caring for inpatient cancer patients, who could read English, and had experience in EOL care. Eligible nurses responded to an open-ended item sent to them as part of a mailed questionnaire. Nurses were asked to respond to the following question: “If you had the ability to change just one …

Very Low Birth Weight And Perinatal Periods Of Risk: Disparities In St. Louis, Pamela Xaverius, Joanne Salas, Deborah Kiel, Candice Woolfolk
Faculty Scholarship
Very low birth weight (VLBW) is a significant issue in St. Louis, Missouri. Our study evaluated risk factors associated with VLBW in this predominantly urban community. Methods. From 2000 to 2009, birth and fetal death certificates were evaluated (𝑛 = 160, 189), and mortality rates were calculated for perinatal periods of risk. The Kitagawa method was used to explore fetoinfant mortality rates (FIMR) in terms of birth weight distribution and birthweight specific mortality. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the magnitude of association of selected risk factors with VLBW. Results. VLBW contributes to 50% of the excess FIMR in St. …

Hospital Staff Registered Nurses’ Perception Of Horizontal Violence, Peer Relationships, And The Quality And Safety Of Patient Care, Christina Purpora, M. A. Blegen, N. A. Stotts
Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications
Objective: To test hypotheses from a horizontal violence and quality and safety of patient care model: horizontal violence (negative behavior among peers) is inversely related to peer relations, quality of care and it is positively related to errors and adverse events. Additionally, the association between horizontal violence, peer relations, quality of care, errors and adverse events, and nurse and work characteristics were determined.
Participants: A random sample (n=175) of hospital staff Registered Nurses working in California.
Methods: Nurses participated via survey. Bivariate and multivariate analyses tested the study hypotheses.
Results: Hypotheses were supported. Horizontal violence was inversely related to peer …
Vaccination Status And Attitudes Of Urban School Employees In Utah,

Vaccination Status And Attitudes Of Urban School Employees In Utah, Kim Estella Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
Individuals who work with children are at risk for exposure to vaccine-preventable diseases. School settings can quickly become outbreak centers for communicable infection since school employees are in direct contact with children in confined areas for many hours each day. Therefore, it is important for school employees to be fully vaccinated. There are many reasons school employees may be inadequately vaccinated. One common myth is that adults believe vaccines are only for children. Another reason for inadequate vaccination rates among school employees is that many adults believe vaccinations received during childhood are still effective. Healthcare providers (HCPs) constitute the first …

The Use Of High-Fidelity Simulation In Psychiatric And Mental Health Nursing Clinical Education, Bethany A. Murray
International Journal of Health Sciences Education
Background: High-fidelity simulation recreates real-life situations in a safe learning environment and encourages critical thinking in students. Published research in simulation in psychiatric/mental health nursing is sparse.
Methods: Four scenarios exemplifying drug or alcohol abuse utilizing the computerized, mannequin SimMan® were implemented. Students evaluated their learning experience following completion of the simulation via a 20-item, Likert-scale survey which included open-ended questions.
Results: Results were positive. Students rated all items on the survey as “agree” or “strongly agree” (Mean 4.77, SD=0.55).
Conclusions: High fidelity clinical education simulations are an effective means of facilitating student learning of psychiatric and mental health clinical …

Investigating The Viability Of Two Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia Isolates After Air-Drying, Samantha Lane, Joanna Brooke
DePaul Discoveries
Abstract
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a water-borne infectious bacterium that is found in both clinical (hospitals) and non-clinical environments. This human pathogen is commonly recovered from respiratory tract infections. A recent study at a hospital in Taiwan suggested that dry patient charts can serve as a vehicle of transmission of this bacterium7. As S. maltophilia is not commonly isolated from dry surfaces, this current study tested the hypothesis that this pathogen can remain viable for some time on a dry surface. This study was designed to determine how long S. maltophilia could remain viable after air-drying by observing …

BACKGROUND
- Older adults are at increased risk for falls and fall related injuries, leading to loss of independence, disability, and increased mortality.
- Preventing injury and falls is a national Healthy People 2010 objective. However, physicians and other health professionals frequently fail to incorporate known evidence into usual care. Screening for falls is not consistently performed as an essential assessment in older adults by primary care providers.
- Multidisciplinary assessment can be an important component in preventing falls in community dwelling adults.
- In new practice models, such as the Chronic Care Model, there is an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration, however health professions …

Vaccination Perceptions Of School Employees In A Rural School District, Janelle L. B. Macintosh
Faculty Publications
Background: There continues to be a need for increases in adult vaccination rates, especially among those working in environments which may easily become communicable disease outbreak centers, such as school employees in the school environment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate why rural Utah school employees were non-compliant with the influenza and measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccines, as well as to identify their view on mandatory vaccination policies.
Methods: A questionnaire was distributed to all school employees in a rural Utah school district. Data analysis included frequencies and measures of central tendency and dispersion for quantitative items …

Nursing Students' Attitude And Knowledge Of Alzheimer's Disease, Michelle Kimzey
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
As the population ages, nurses must be prepared to provide care for the large number of people with Alzheimer's disease (PWAD). Research is limited on nursing students and people with AD, whether nursing education prepares students to care for this population, or the best methods to educate students in an insightful and collaborative environment. The aim of this mixed methods design study was to determine the effects of educational experiences on nursing students' knowledge and attitudes towards people with AD. The qualitative piece identified factors that influenced and explained differences in nursing students' knowledge and attitudes surrounding the care of …
