Evaluation Of Continuing Interprofessional Client-Centered Collaborative Practice Programs, Carole A. Orchard
Nursing Publications
This chapter highlights the value of developing program evaluation approaches that focus on the merit or worth of the learning in relation to the program’s perceived accuracy, utility, feasibility, and propriety. A number of approaches to creating a program evaluation plan are provided. A case is made for the application of program logic models (PLMs) to continuing interprofessional education (CIPE) program evaluation. The argument is raised about the comprehensive nature in its application of an open systems approach that allows the linking back to the reason for the program.A case study is then provided to demonstrate how a manager can …

The focus in this chapter is on the assessment of learning associated with continuing interprofessional education (CIPE) programs. It presents a case for using a formative approach to learning that is then assessed beyond just the CIPE program. How a participant converts learning gained and how it can be shared with fellow members in an interprofessional team are discussed. Factors that influence and impede knowledge uptake are presented. The chapter then shifts to discussion of assessment of team performance addressing team dynamics, knowledge contributions of members, and the organizational environment within which the team practices. Finally, the author provides examples …

Abstract Related to Algorithm:
Description/Background
Improving pain management is a priority for all healthcare providers, yet the process for how pain is assessed, reported and resolved often lacks a defined process. This lack of structure can lead to delays in pain control for patients and frustrations within healthcare teams. In an effort to facilitate patient-centered care, an interdisciplinary workgroup was constructed to address this process.
Action
In order to eliminate delays and define a process for pain management, an interdisciplinary workgroup utilized performance improvement processes to develop a communication algorithm. The group membership included nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing …

Trauma, primarily in the form of intimate partner violence and automobile accidents, accounts for 6-8% of all pregnancy complications. Much less is known about cumulative trauma (CT) exposure especially in African-American women. Women exposed to several types of trauma including childhood abuse, discrimination, or witnessed family violence may develop symptoms of posttraumatic stress or have difficulty sleeping.

The Experiences Of Black American Older Adults Managing Pain: A Nursing Ethnography, Sheria Grice Robinson
Wayne State University Dissertations
Introduction: Pain can negatively affect quality of life for Black elders. They are less likely to report pain concerns and have voiced pain needs adequately met. To better understand the pain management experiences and concerns of Black elders, an ethnographic study was completed within an urban, low-income, elder housing facility. Methods: 106 participants completed a questionnaire comprised of a demographic tool, the PROMIS Global Health Scale (PROMIS), the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), and the Psychological Stress Measure (PSM-9). Additionally, participant observation, informal interviews, and 20 formal recorded interviews with individuals identified as having pain were completed. Qualitative and frequency analysis …

Literature Review Of Nosocomial Infections Passed Through Nurses' Personal Items, Corina Hickman
Student Research Posters
As defined by the encyclopedia, nosocomial infections are infections whose development is favored by a hospital environment, such as one acquired by a patient during a hospital visit or one developing among hospital staff. There has been more of a prevalence of hospital-acquired infections that are linked directly to medical personnel – especially nurses. Nurses have the most contact with patients and are potentially putting patients at highest risk for nosocomial infections. Even though nurses are following isolation precautions and standard hand washing in between patients; there are still a few things on nurses that could be harmful to their …

Alcohol, Tobacco And Illicit Drug Screening In Pregnancy, Lisa R. Jasin
Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Projects
Intrauterine substance exposure is a nationally growing problem. A steady increase in neonates with neonatal abstinence syndrome in the state of Ohio was noted. Prenatal substance use presents a significant burden to society. Of infants exposed to intrauterine opiates, 55-94 percent develop signs of withdrawal. For example, the estimated lifetime cost for a neonate with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is $2 million. The purpose of this evidence based practice improvement project was to evaluate the utility of the 5Ps screening tool and brief intervention by community health workers during the first prenatal home visit. The Evidence-Based Practice Improvement (EBPI) model …

This qualitative study using transcript analysis was undertaken to clarify the value of Harasim’s Online Collaborative Learning Theory as a way to assess the collaborative process within nursing education. The theory incorporated three phases: (1) idea generating; (2) idea organizing; and (3) intellectual convergence. The transcripts of asynchronous discussions from a two-week module about disaster nursing using a virtual community were analyzed and formed the data for this study.
This study supports the use of Online Collaborative Learning Theory as a framework for assessing online collaborative discourse. Individual or group outcomes were required for the students to move through all …

The fatherhood role is influenced by culture, religion, social factors, and economic norms. In Jamaica pregnancy is often treated as a female only event. Women are left to visit their clinics alone and have support from female family members. The man’s focus is providing financial support. In the past fathers were subjected to migrant labor and left their families for long periods. This tradition remained even when they were not working. Today, men are taking on more of the role of fatherhood, becoming involved and supportive and experiencing the privilege of pregnancy though of a secondary nature through their partner’s …

Challenges To Breastfeeding Infants With Phenylketonuria, Sandra Banta-Wright
Faculty Publications - College of Nursing
Breastfeeding duration for infants with phenylketonuria (PKU) is less than other full-term infants. However, no study has examined the challenges encountered by mothers' breastfeeding infants with PKU. In 75 mothers of a child with PKU, three categories of breastfeeding challenges were identified: common breastfeeding issues, breastfeeding and PKU, and no challenges. The common breastfeeding issues can be identified in the literature but for these mothers, the issues are heightened due to frequent phenylalanine (Phe) monitoring. Even so, many mothers adapt breastfeeding to maintain desired Phe levels. A few mothers had no issues and were the exception, not the norm.

Developing leaders and leadership are key factors to improve learning and teaching in higher education. Despite the abundance of literature concerning developing formal leadership, fewer studies have been conducted with academics in non-formal leadership roles that focus on how they develop their leadership in learning and teaching. Publication and funding metrics are evidence of leadership and success in research. Metrics in learning and teaching exist, but are less well accepted and valued. We undertook a qualitative descriptive study to examine how academics in non-formal leadership roles at an Australian university understood leadership and described their leadership in teaching. Following ethical …

Theses and Graduate Projects
Collaboration within multiple disciplines is fundamental to the success of any health care practitioner. For the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), collaboration as well as the use of a mentor during a detailed, organized orientation leads to success in the chosen field of the APRN. A good orientation requires the current staff to work together in a harmonious way to mentor the new orientee and ultimately produces a confident staff member. An unorganized orientation lacking in collaboration may force the orientee to struggle, never knowing if they are on the right path, can lead to disruption of the unit, dissatisfaction, …

A healthy work environment is an essential part of a nurse's professional practice. Providing nurses access to resources to understand the importance of a healthy work environment should be present in healthcare organizations. After evaluating a Radiology Department at a large hospital in the Midwest, the themes of communication, collaboration, and authentic leadership were revealed as areas to be improved upon for this work environment. Not only will these themes contribute to the workplace as well as providing effective patient care. The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) Standards for Establishing and Sustaining Healthy Work Environments (Barden, 2005:2016) and Martha …
