Quality Improvement Project: Impact Of Educational Intervention On Post-Acute And Long-Term Care Staff's Confidence And Accuracy In Aims Screening For Tardive Dyskinesia, Tana Whitt

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a chronic, often irreversible movement disorder associated with prolonged antipsychotic use. In post-acute and long-term care (PALTC) settings, inconsistent Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) screening practices and limited clinician education contribute to under recognition and delayed treatment. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) quality improvement (QI) project evaluated whether an educational intervention impacted clinicians’ knowledge, confidence, and perceived importance of AIMS screening among licensed and unlicensed PALTC staff. Guided by Donabedian’s Model of Quality and Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model, the project used a pre-test/post-test design to measure outcomes before and after completion of the Drug-Induced Movement …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Purpose/Background

Adolescents' mental health has worsened and become a public health issue, with depression being a primary concern. There is an urgent need for early screening, school-based referral pathways, and interventions to address common problems in high schools. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) is a validated, evidence-based tool for detecting depression; however, its systematic use in school-based counseling settings through organized training has not been studied for implementation in high schools. This review assesses the current literature on the impact and effectiveness of PHQ-9 training for school counselors on mental health referrals among high school students, with a focus on early …

Cultural Humility In Patient Education: Development Of A Nutrition-Related Simulation For Nursing Students, Theresa G. Schnable, Sylvia Peña, Juanita T. Garcia, Marilyn Frenn

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Introduction:

The Latinx community is disproportionately impacted by social and structural inequities such as food insecurity and culturally and linguistically appropriate resources. To address a gap in culturally appropriate nutrition education with Latinx individuals among baccalaureate nursing students, a simulation learning experience (SLE) was developed.

Methodology:

The SLE was designed using best practice standards by faculty experts and reviewed by consultants. After the SLE, students and faculty provided feedback regarding simulation design and implementation.

Results:

Participants reported improved knowledge and confidence when providing culturally appropriate nutrition education and valued working with an interpreter.

Discussion:

This innovative strategy using simulation offers …

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Decreased access to diagnostic services is a known barrier in autism care management. Utilizing a hybrid care model incorporating telehealth and face-to-face appointments may be one option to increase access to care. The current study examined caregivers' satisfaction with a hybrid model used to administer pediatric autism diagnostic evaluations. Methods: We used a quantitative research design with convenience sampling to administer a telehealth satisfaction survey to caregivers of children living in medically underserved areas who were referred for an autism diagnostic evaluation. Timeliness and accuracy of diagnostic evaluations via the hybrid model were also assessed. Findings: Most caregivers did …

Background Advanced practice nursing (APN) and advanced practice midwifery (APM) in Kenya are critical in healthcare system strengthening by expanding access to quality care, particularly in underserved regions. Globally, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) defines APN as a level of nursing practice that requires a minimum of a master’s degree, along with advanced clinical training and competency. Similarly, APM involves midwives with advanced training to provide specialized maternal and neonatal care. In Kenya, the APN and APM concepts were launched in 2020 and are still nascent, and their practice is determined by the context as provided by the country …

Effects Of Aromatherapy On Promoting Sleep In Patients With Neurological Deficits, Cherylle R. Reed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reliance on sleep aids in neurological patient population can lead to negative side effects and compromise patient safety. The purpose of this doctoral nursing project was to determine if the implementation of McDonnell and Newcomb’s aromatherapy process will reduce the incidence of sleep-promoting medication administration as compared to the current practice in neurological deficit patients over 4 weeks. A quantitative, quasi-experimental design evaluated effects on sleep quality and pharmacological sleep aids by using McDonnell and Newcomb’s aromatherapy combination of lavender, bergamot, and ylang ylang essential oils placed on a cotton ball at the patient’s bedside each night. The sample included …

Developing Clinical Judgment In Nursing Students Using Discourse With Meaningful Feedback, Explanatory Mixed Methods Design, Annissa C. Jackson

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

The competency of clinical judgment in new nurses leading to safe practice has declined. The integrated clinical education theory posits discourse with meaningful feedback between nurse educators and pre-licensure students during clinical experiences enhances the development of clinical judgment. Quantitative evidence is needed for efficacy of clinical teaching using discourse with meaningful feedback. The hypothesis for this study was implementation of discourse with meaningful feedback between the academic nurse educator and the pre-licensure student nurse in direct patient care will improve the development of clinical judgment in students compared to the development of clinical judgment in students exposed to other …
