Leadership Practices Of Supervisory Employees: An Exploration Of Current Practices At A Southeastern Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Melissa M. Zimmerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the nation’s healthcare system moves through the 21st century, unprecedented changes are occurring on both a local and global stage. Healthcare organizations are faced with creating and implementing leadership strategies to enhance the overall patient experience. When coupled with the need to ensure increased nurse job satisfaction, improved cost-effectiveness and healthy organizational cultures with fiscally sound budgets, improvement work has led efforts to ensure effective leadership techniques are used across an agency.

This task may be viewed as commonplace for some organizations, while others may perceive this process as a complete paradigm shift from historical practices related to …

Bariatric Surgery Weight-Loss Maintenance Among Hispanics: A Multiple Case Study, Minerva Aguilera 2016 University of Texas at Tyler

Bariatric Surgery Weight-Loss Maintenance Among Hispanics: A Multiple Case Study, Minerva Aguilera

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Obesity significantly contributes to human illness and to subsequent rising healthcare expenditures. Bariatric surgery has been identified as the only effective option to achieve the weight loss necessary for those who are morbidly obese. Previous research indicated that maintaining significant weight loss has been a problem for individuals who undergo bariatric surgery. The number of bariatric surgeries is increasing and factors that contribute to or interfere following bariatric-surgery weight-loss maintenance need to be determined. Research on weight-loss maintenance following bariatric surgery is very limited, particularly among the Hispanic population. This case-study research used an explanatory, multiple-case-study design to gain greater …

Personal Protective Equipment Use For Patients With Clostridium Difficile, Mallory L. Compton 2016 Murray State University School of Nursing

Personal Protective Equipment Use For Patients With Clostridium Difficile, Mallory L. Compton

Scholars Week

In researching the literature on correct PPE by healthcare staff when a patient has C. diff. I have found that the policy on PPE for patients with C. diff at Baptist Health Paducah is compliant. The theoretical framework used for this research is that of Imogene King. Their policy is evidence based and is also cost effective when it comes to preventing the spread of infection from patient to patient. There is no need for change to this policy at this time because it is supported by evidence in the literature.

Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal

Having a “good death” is a very important goal of palliative care, and it is useful for nurses to understand cultural differences in the perception of a good death to propose nursing care. The purpose of this study was to compare the perception of a “good death” among community-dwelling Japanese and Thai people. Three hundred sixty-nine respondents completed the Good Death Questionnaire. The research design was a cross-sectional study. The scores of the Japanese respondents on “good relationships with medical staff,” “being respected as an individual,” and “fighting against cancer” were higher among Thai respondents. On the other hand, “environmental …

The Lived Experience Of Fathers With Advanced Cancer, Maria Mowassee 2016 CUNY Graduate Center

The Lived Experience Of Fathers With Advanced Cancer, Maria Mowassee

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Historically, fathers have been neglected as a research population in the nursing and oncology literature. This was in relation to their role being viewed as a disciplinarian and breadwinner instead of a nurturer. Fast-forward to modern day society, their role has evolved into a more involved parent that is necessary for their child’s development and well-being. The literature has also evolved and in recent years, this population has been gaining recognition and it is of great importance to understand their role, perception, and concerns as it pertains to being involved fathers. Therefore, when considering fathers with advanced cancer when death …

Improving Unit Dynamics: Incorporating Lead Nurse Program On A Medical-Surgical Unit, Kara Mace 2016 University of San Francisco

Improving Unit Dynamics: Incorporating Lead Nurse Program On A Medical-Surgical Unit, Kara Mace

Master's Projects and Capstones

Clinical nursing leadership is now recognized as a key professional competency that will assure quality patient care and efficient work processes. The medical-surgical unit (MSU) at VA Mather has had high turnover rates and low staff satisfaction surveys for the past two years, which has led to a decline in staff morale. Lead nurses are in key positions to develop their unit staff, promote leadership development, and they are encouraged to act as role models in their practice. Change is difficult; therefore, the application of essential leadership skills is a necessary accompaniment to a change strategy in order to produce …

Factors Associated With Self-Care Behavior In Persons With Heart Failure., Mohammed Munther Al-Hammouri 2016 University of Louisville

Factors Associated With Self-Care Behavior In Persons With Heart Failure., Mohammed Munther Al-Hammouri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Heart failure is a serious illness that mostly affects the elderly. It is characterized by progressive deterioration of the heart muscle and affects the quality of life of those living with it. The progression of the illness has been shown to be slower with appropriate self-care. Several studies examined predictors of self-care extensively. The results were inconsistent and usually explained a small fraction of the variance in self-care in persons with heart failure, and they usually overlooked some potential predictors that could be related to self-care in person with heart failure. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to …

To Foster A Culture Of Curiosity: A Hermeneutic Study Of The Experienced Nurse Educator And Student Intellectual Curiosity In The Online Learning Environment, Bedelia H. Russell 2016 East Tennessee State University

To Foster A Culture Of Curiosity: A Hermeneutic Study Of The Experienced Nurse Educator And Student Intellectual Curiosity In The Online Learning Environment, Bedelia H. Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Skills of inquiry are essential outcomes from a baccalaureate nursing education. Students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity can develop effective skills of inquiry. Nurse educators must place emphasis on teaching and learning strategies which engage student intellectual curiosity. However, the concept of intellectual curiosity is not well-studied across multiple contexts of teaching and learning environments within nursing education. In addition, there is little known about the experienced nurse educator and the meaning of student intellectual curiosity across multiple teaching and learning environments. With the increased emphasis on online teaching and learning in nursing education as a solution for expanding student access …

Comparative Look At The Depression Treatment Modalities Of Cognitive, Teresa M. Page 2016 Liberty University

Comparative Look At The Depression Treatment Modalities Of Cognitive, Teresa M. Page

Doctoral Dissertations and Scholarly Projects

This integrative review provides a comparative view of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy (PCT) as treatment modalities for adult depression. The foci of this integrative review are to examine research articles on CBT and PCT to determine which therapy, monotherapy or combination therapy, provide a higher level of therapy for depression. The metrics utilized are depression symptom remission, response to therapy, recovery from depression, and quality of life. Individual preference and response to treatment vary. This makes the reader more aware that specific populations may be more receptive to one therapy instead of the other.
