Problem: The population of the US has become increasingly ethnically diverse. This diversity has not been reflected in the nursing workforce with approximately 70% being Caucasian and 85% being female, resulting in a disparity in healthcare delivery by minorities. The purpose of this project was to perform an analysis of race, ethnicity, and gender diversity in undergraduate nursing applicants at a rural midwestern university.

Method: A retrospective review of nursing applications, enrollment reports, and graduation rates were examined for three academic years.

Problem: Genomics in undergraduate nursing education has experienced slow adoption in the United States. Various approaches have been proposed but do not address barriers to successful implementation.

Methods: A strategic plan was developed to increase the amount of genetics and genomic content in the curriculum of an undergraduate nursing program. A gap analysis was performed on the curriculum revealing a paucity of content. A SWOT analysis informed the strategic plan, which included a faculty education program using the ANA/ISONG’s Essentials of Genetic and Genomic Nursing: Competencies, Curricula Guidelines and Outcome Indicators (2^nd ed.) (2009) as a foundation.

As COVID-19 emerged on the world stage a challenge arose to help inform the knowledge base in home health-care nursing. Connecting current experience with the Pajarillo theory "The Nub of Nursing Information Behavior (NIB" was a first step. To provide a taxonomy of NIB, standard domain analytical tools for ontology extraction were employed using Pajarillo's text. Analysis generated frequency distributions of terms and phrases which were then sorted and disambiguated to generate a list of phenomena. Co-word analysis generated visualizations to suggest regions that might constitute facets and sub-facets. Facet analysis yielded six major facets and 17 sub-facets. The NANDA …

Background Critical care nurses routinely care for dying patients. Research on obstacles in providing end-of-life care has been conducted for more than 20 years, but change in such obstacles over time has not been examined.

Objective To determine whether the magnitude scores of obstacles and helpful behaviors regarding end-of-life care have changed over time.

Methods In this cross-sectional survey study, questionnaires were sent to 2000 randomly selected members of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. Obstacle and helpful behavior items were analyzed using mean magnitude scores. Current data were compared with data gathered in 1999.

Delirium is a complex syndrome resulting from compounding effects of acute illness, comorbidities, and the environment. It results in adverse outcomes: elevated mortality rates, length of stay, readmissions, institutionalization, long-term cognitive changes, and diminished quality of life. The rate of iatrogenic delirium is astounding, ranging from 10%-89%. There are no curative treatments; thus, primary prevention is the key. Objective: To improve self-efficacy in patients with type 2 diabetes and a Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) of 8% (64 mmol/mol) or greater using an innovative education multidisciplinary approach in a group setting.

Research Design and Methods: Out of 248 patients that were contacted with type 2 diabetes, who had a HbA1c of 8% or greater, five patients from a large clinic in the Midwest agreed to participate in group education. The primary outcome of interest was lowering HbA1c levels to increase the number of patients with type 2 diabetes who meet the community standard of care.

This project identified gaps in policy and processes to improve patient outcomes related to workflow in the catheter-associated urinary tract infection policy and process at a 400-bed hospital in southern California. Even with an evidence-based infection prevention bundle in place, the current process was not working, as demonstrated by high catheter-associated infection rates for the last two years.

Purpose/Aims: This study explored the relationships between military characteristics such as combat experience, mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), depression, anxiety and substance use disorder (SUD), physical comorbidities such as coronary artery disease (CAD), other risk factors, and delirium diagnosis among hospitalized veterans.

Inclusion of disability content in nursing curricula is limited. Smeltzer and colleagues (2010) discovered an absence of disability-related content in pre-licensure nursing textbooks.
