Bridgeport Hospital has successfully improved patient care by implementing Individualized Clinical Bias Scores (ICBS) for triage nurses in our emergency department (ED). Through the use of data analysis, we identified that patients of color were being assigned less urgent acuities when presenting with the same complaints as white patients. By addressing this implicit bias and implementing a new system of ICBS for our ED Triage Nurses, we have seen a significant improvement in the equitable treatment of all patients regardless of race or ethnicity.

A knowledge gap in emergency management was identified through transition to practice program (TTPP) data and discussions with new nurses and nurse leaders. In response an Emergency Management Virtual Simulation (EMVS) was implemented. This evidence based educational method is engaging and is shown to increase confidence and learning outcomes. Virtual simulation gives new graduate nurses an opportunity to collaborate, critically think in stressful situations, and “experience the real-life chaos” in a safe learning environment.

Anesthesia Management For The Preeclampsia Or Hypertensive Parturient, Britanie Sumpter

Preeclampsia is a placental disease characterized by abnormal maternoplacental blood vessels and placental dysfunction resulting in fetoplacental hypoperfusion and maternal multi-system organ dysfunction (Wang et al., 2019). Expectant management of a hypertensive or preeclamptic parturient includes antihypertensive medications, magnesium sulfate for seizure prophylaxis, and early delivery of the fetus (ACOG, 2020). Neuraxial anesthetic-induced sympathectomy combined with circulating antihypertensives, magnesium sulfate therapy, and intravascular volume depletion in preeclampsia is thought to contribute to exaggerated hypotension.

This quality improvement project implemented the patient-initiated follow-up (PIFU) pathway in a gynecology clinic setting. PIFU has potential to lead to decreased no-show appointments and increased patient autonomy in outpatient healthcare practices. Barriers that influence compliance with plans of care include lower socioeconomic status, racial and ethnic minorities, and unmet social needs such as food insecurity, healthcare travel and cost, and child/adult care needs. In addition to higher rates of no-show appointments, individuals facing these barriers have increased comorbidities. Poor health behaviors cost the United States billions of dollars and tens of thousands of lives every year. The Veterans Affairs primary care delivery model uses health coaching as a catalyst to improve health behaviors in veterans. Health coaching is a complex skill that requires specialized training, repetitive practice, and professional confidence. Albert Bandura believed most people acquire skills and develop the confidence to use those skills through social learning. The study is a comparison experiment that looks at the different types of interventions to treat chronic pain. This study is set at Haysmed Rehabilitation to gather data on adult patients with chronic pain. When studying the interventions used for chronic pain, we found numerous ways of treatment. They are categorized as pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. During the study we found, that an understanding of what is causing the pain and the use of both interventions is the best way to go about treating/managing chronic pain.

This project explores the implementation of Student Success Coaches at Augusta Technical College (Augusta Tech) and their potential impact on the rates of overall program completion and the rate of diverse student program completion. Framed within the GROW model and Sociocultural Learning Theory, the project aims to determine if coaching interventions address barriers to completion and foster a supportive learning environment. Nursing shortages nationwide have been exemplified since the global pandemic demanding an examination of contributing factors crippling the profession. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 200,000 annual vacant registered nurse positions for the next decade, are problematic due to the mass exodus of individuals serving in the occupation (Gaines, 2022). Falls in hospital settings pose significant safety and financial risks, particularly in Behavioral Health Units (BHU), where fall rates often exceed national averages. Despite traditional fall prevention practices, such as risk assessments and post-fall huddles, the target BH unit continued to experience high fall rates, failing to meet the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) standards.
